I knew obviously when and I though why Detroit went from predominately cold loving German, Polish, Russian and Scandinavian steelworkers to Black assembly line workers. I was thinking of Henry Ford. It never occurred to me that Henry would have imported Irish or Italian immigrants for the factory if it was a viable option. Enriching poor blacks was the available low cost labor option.

That paradigm repeated itself during WWII as well. Women, blacks, hell, all minorities prospered as a result of virtually 0 immigration.

I had never seriously considered reducing the immigration quotas but there is some food for thought in the article.

Arguing that there is actually NOT a dearth of American Engineers, it' jsust that importing them is cheaper so companies are advertising only in foreign markets, locating a candidate or twenty THEN notifying the gov't, "Gee we looked and looked and we cannot find this talent here, so gimme a stack of work visas please."

With the number of people out of work, that seems maybe plausible...
they had anecdotal stuff, not sure I bought their guesstimates on numbers.

I can guarantee that is going on, from personal experience. I know quite a number of people just where I work who've been laid off because their "position was made redundant" then within a month or so someone off-shore is contracted to do the work, or they get an H-1B.
There are likely a few positions that can't be filled domestically, but for the most part it's $$ that decide.

This is true, the hi-tech companies get a shit pot of what amounts to indentured servitude workers that way. They have immigration attorneys that they pay to secure H1b tickets for foreign engineers. These people work at nearly slave wages (based on the local economy) and in mortal fear of being 'released' only to be forced to return to their home country. They can't even secure employment else where unless the prospective employer picks up the H1b. This in turn drives down the overall salary structure. The hi-tech companies have virtually all signed on the the Senates comprehensive bill because it significantly increases the H1b annual quotas. The same can be said about the bills contents re. the smaller businesses hence the support of the Chamber of Commerce. Essentially the legislation is loaded with all sorts of perqs for the medium to large biz concern. All to the detriment of the US worker. Not unlike all the special set-asides that were a part of "Shuck&JiveCare" that were needed to garner the support of some few Dem. Senators.

The article I was reading anecdotally was as you say.

Persons affected were not even offered the option to compete and negotiate downward for the job they desperately needed.

Until that article and Ish's clip I had always thought, HEY, the more engineer in this country the better, and since we don't incentivize white males who traditionally did that to do that anymore and others don't seem to be filling the gap made by that turn of events, bring them here.

My Grandad encouraged my Dad into the field because it was high-paying... in those days headed north of Doctor pay. I hadn't considered that perhaps the H-1Bs have slowed the rise in wages and made the field less attractive to all regardless of gender and color.

When he announced early on that they were not going to enforce immigration policies, he sent a clear signal, come, come in droves, we welcome your diversity and "opportunity."


That us why he is nonchalantly drinking beer, playing pool and demanding more cash, his plan is working exactly as he intended. Republicans have to give him the money or THEY are the problem. This is an issue because Obama and Holder decided not to enforce the law and then went to war with Arizona to show everyone else, by example, what happens when you become one of their "enemies" (a reference to that speech that he made to the La Raza types) when Arizona took it upon themselves to enforce the law.

When people stopped coming back, the word was out.

Then the administration changed how they count "deportations" so that they could lie about being the most prolific administration ever to deport "hapless immigrants" and "refugees..."

The law you are referring to was specifically enacted to deal with a problem that this invasion is not representative of. He would be well within his powers to amend the law to reflect the will of the congress, and at the same time the will of the people, without a great deal of political or legal fall out.
