The 14th amendment doesn't define "natural born citizens". It just says that if your parents run across the border to give birth to you in the US, you're good to go.

It doesn't say anything about what happens if your citizen parents give birth to you outside the US...clearly, in that case, you are still a natural born citizen of the US, per the old statutes and a history of corresponding precedents.

I understand you're looking for a problem in good faith, but trust me, there's none here. If there was any fire here, the smoke would be much darker than one writer to one somewhat obscure commentator.

In Engish, saying "All As are B", in this case, all persons born in the US are citizens, says nothing about things which are not A, in this case persons born outside the US. It's entirely possible that some not A's are also B...in this case, some people both outside the US are native born citizens. That clause simply doesn't address that issue.

If there was a different wording or different clause, e.g. "All natural born US citizens are persons born in the United States", then you'd have a point, but it doesn't say that, and what it does say isn't the same as this.

The line about the "constitution defining natural born citizen" is the opinion of the writer, and not something that will impact the election.

I honestly don't see anyother way unless Romney squeaks through. The 'Country Clubbers' are back in charge and they've written the conservatives off. Most likely because they think, in the end, we'll turn to, grit our teeth, and pull the lever for their boy rather than Hillary or Obama. They can't quite seem to accept that there are other options and that we just might prefer to see Hillary or Obama in charge than to put up with their arrogance and bullshit.

I don't think it will impact the election at all and I'm not looking for anything. I saw this article, and realizing the Constitution is pretty clear, I thought it was legitimate subject matter. I know nothing will be done about it, yet there it is.

This is all ultimately a matter of interpretation for courts, etc., and all of us can have our own, irrelevant interpretations. However, I'm puzzled now, since you're a smart guy--assuming you agree with the writer that that part of the 14th amendment says people born outside the US can't become president, why do you think nobody trying to defeat McCain, say Romney, has brought it up? Don't they see it as clearly as you do?
