The Traveler {Closed}

Matt was making a sign to hand on the door of his restaurant, “Closed for Private Function” Matt was celebrating is 27 birthday with all his friends in his own restaurant, and all his staff were doing all the decorating and preparing all the food. Lucky for him it was a great sunny day and most could walk and not having to take the street car.

Matt was born in a dinky town named Buffalo gulp he didn’t know but was glad to leave it behind. At 27 he was still single and loving it. Many of his patrons were girls and some of them where coming on to him, but he just wasn’t ready, plus the restaurant kept him very busy.

Matt was a great looking man at 6’5 with a trim and well-muscled body was the envy’s of many on the beach during summer. The celebration went all well with just some having a little too much to drink, but overall it was great to have all his friends celebrate with him.

He was just closing the door when he heard a noise in the kitchen. “Oh! Boy” he said to himself, “who the hack got to drunk that couldn’t go home.” He walk’s towards the kitchen when a woman came through the door.

“Who’re you?” he asked her, than he noticed how she was dressed. The dress had to by half way up her thighs that’s how short it was.

Well speak up before I call the cops what are you doing ion my restaurant” he asked her.

Penny couldn't be happier with her purchase as she walked down the hall to her condo. Her first authentic antique! She didn't believe in the curse that someone in the auction was talking about, but some people were still superstitious for no reason. She took out the old flint gun in her hand and admired it. She would take these over any guy any day.

Men were simply just a lot of work and she really got nothing out of it.

Tucking her ebony hair to her ear, she saw herself in the barrel of the gun. Her image was distorted but she could still see her gray eyes. Of course, she had a Victoria's Secret model body that her friends were so envious of despite eating a lot. She wasn't exactly a show off, but she wanted to kick back and relax, so she put on a short flaring skit and a tank top.

She turned her gun and found a spot that was a little blurry. She wiped it down with a napkin she always had on her and it came off a little. She rubbed it even more, until it was squeaky clean.

"Ow!" Penny grunted walking right into a sink. Wait, a sink?

She looked around the unfamiliar place. It was a kitchen, an old backwards one to be precise. Something like a set in a movie. Before she could try to figure out where she was, a man was standing in the doorway, looking at her menacingly.

"Alright, alright! Don't get your panties in a twist." She held up her hands, putting the gun down to appear less menacing. "I know this is going to sound weird, but I have no idea how I got here. I was just walking through the condo's halls to my unit and, here I am. Wherever this. What is this place anyway?"

"Alright, alright! Don't get your panties in a twist." What the hell is this crazy dame talking about? What panties in what twist. This dame must be a real Waco. He said to himself.

"I know this is going to sound weird, but I have no idea how I got here. I was just walking through the condo's halls to my unit and, here I am. Wherever this. What is this place anyway?"

Matt was wandering what condos was and in what unit, but nothing made any sense. Matt heard many stories before but this girl just told him was at the top of his list.

“Look lady, this is my restaurant, and you are standing in my kitchen, now you better come clean of I will call the cops. This place is call restaurant, and if you mean the city, it’s New Your city and how did you get here if you don’t know where you are.”

Matt started to put things together starting with her clothes, there is no way she could’ve got them in New Your. All the dressed were long down to the ground but he sure like hers. He was sure something was off here, and the other thing was, how she got into the kitchen with all the outside door locked.

"New York?" Alice looked out the window and saw nothing of New York completely forgetting his threat of the cops. "What is this? Some kind of gag show or something? It's freaking rush hour and I can't hear a single car outside. If that is outside."

She looked at his eyes and saw them stare at her long legs. "Eyes over here, buster! This is my face. What's wrong with you? Never seen legs on a woman before?"

Sighing, she pulled out the phone in her purse and saw that she had no signal. "What the hell? For Pete's sake! You even have signal jammers in here? Look, if you wanna call the cops, go ahead, but I'm telling you, if you're trying to kidnap me, I come prepared." Her other hand went to the Tazer in the pocket of her purse. New York was, after all, really dangerous.

"New York?" she repeated what he just told her, and then she looks out the window. Yes Lady it New York like I told you Matt said again.

"What is this? Some kind of gag show or something? Its freaking rush hour and I can't hear a single car outside. If that is outside." She said to him while he was looking at her bare legs again, and what a pair she had he thought.

"Eyes over here, buster! This is my face. What's wrong with you? Never seen legs on a woman before?" she nearly yelled at him.

“No lady not like your I haven’t and you do have a pair on you, and you should be ashamed walking almost naked. You could be arrested walking around like that.” He told her and then saw her pull something from her purse.

"What the hell? For Pete's sake! You even have signal jammers in here? Look, if you wanna call the cops, go ahead, but I'm telling you, if you're trying to kidnap me, I come prepared.” She told him showing him something else, only he didn’t know what it was.

“Look lady, you forgetting you’re in my restaurant I can have you arrested, so why don’t you tell me how you got in and maybe I’ll give you a break? He told her, and he looked again at those beautiful legs of hers. He then realized she was one beautiful looking dame.

Walking almost naked? What? Was the man insane or something? And what was with him constantly staring at her legs?

Well, one thing was true, she wasn't at her own place. And frankly, she really just wanted to go home. "Look, I have no idea. I really was walking on the 50th floor of my building when I just bumped into your sink. I don't know what you did to bring me here, but I just really want to go home. I'm tired and hungry, okay? And for Pete's sake! Stop staring, I'm not naked!"

While she didn't like being ogled at, she was definitely flattered that a guy as hot as he was, was finding her attractive whether he said so or not. If the way he looked at her didn't mean he liked how she looked, she was an idiot.

Matt couldn’t help himself. He had never seen a beautiful woman like her showing her legs in public, and his eyes just kept going to her legs. Matt also realized that she didn’t look like a nut case, he was sure something happen to her to be here in his restaurant.

“Look miss, my name is Matt, and I do own this place, and I don’t know what to make of you. Come look out the window and look what the women are wearing, then tell me why I peep looking at your gorgeous legs.
You talk like you’re from another world lady. You look out there while I make you something to eat.” He told her.

Penny was beginning to feel so distraught, but the man, Matt, was being such a gentleman, he became one less person to worry about. Though, she had to say he was still a man, staring at her legs like that.

"Penny. My name's Penny."

With no other choice, she looked out his window and her jaw dropped. This was definitely not the New York she knew. If this was a gag, it was huge having everyone dress old fashioned clothes and turning a whole town into something straight out of the movies.

But what if it was just a screen? Taking a deep breath, she opened the door and stepped out.

No. It was all real. The sights, sounds and smells were not fabricated. Red brick buildings, carriages, horse manure, smells of bread baking, carts...everything was not the New York she knew, and yet, Matt claimed it was. And the pain of hitting the sink a while ago made sure that she wasn't dreaming. She walked a little further touching the walls of the restaurant and she became the center of attention instantly. People put their heads together looking and pointing at her, and she realized that Matt was right. To the people who were covered from neck to foot with clothing, she did seem like she was walking around in her underwear.

"Penny. My name's Penny." She had said to him.

Matt was busy making some to eat for Penny and never saw her stepping outside, till he heard the sound of the door closing. He ran after her so she wouldn’t venture to far then get arrested for indecent exposure.

He was in time to take her arm and drag her back inside, well at least now she knew this was New York. He told himself.

“Sit down Penny. We need to talk and don’t be scared, I’ll help you all I can but you need to listen to me. First off you are not to go outside till I can get you some decent clothes.” He told her while he put some the fry chicken in a plate and took it to her where she sat.

“Do you believe me now I what told you. I know you’re not from here that is plain by what you’re wearing, and if women wear the same clothes you’re wearing where you came from, we have a big problem. Nowhere in the US of A a woman is wearing what you’re wearing. You need to tell me where you live and what year it is.

Penny was too stunned to react as Matt dragged her back in. She couldn't believe it. She was...lost. Sitting down was a respite as she felt her legs shake in fear and weakness. For a while, his words just passed over her head, unable to let everything sink in until silence came between the both of them.

"I--" she struggled to find the words with her head still in shambles. "I live in New York, near Central Park. Manhattan. Uh...year? What year? 2014. Look, I can't be gone for long. I have client meetings set tomorrow. I can't be stuck here! This is...what year is it? And what's the big problem with how I dress? I dress fine! So I look different. That's all."

Penny knew she was rambling, but there wasn't much she could really do and her head wasn't on straight anymore.

Matt wasn’t sure she understood all he said to her even after she saw outside, and he had to get through to her somehow.

“Penny I like you to eat your food while tell you how thinks look from my perspective. I don’t mind telling you that they don’t look to good. I have no idea how you came to be here, but I do know you don’t belong here. Nothing you said say and the clothes you’re wring, including those gadgets you have they don’t belong here either, not in 1800 they don’t.

You just told me you are from 2014. I don’t know or pretend to know how you got here, but something happened to you where you came from and now you’re here. You’re in the right city only 314 years back in time. So forget about 2014, concentrate on what you were doing before you found yourself in my kitchen, and maybe we can figure how you got here.”

I promise to look after you, and you can stay here with me, I have a big place above the restaurant where you can stay.

Unable to do anything else, she ate in silence trying to figure out her next move.

"I promise to look after you, and you can stay here with me, I have a big place above the restaurant where you can stay."

She looked up at him, suspicion inn her eyes. She had not known New York to be a friendly city. Was it possible that three hundred years ago, it wasn't as bad? She didn't know if she could trust him, but where would she go? All she knew was she was walking down the hall, polishing her newly bought gun and then...

The gun! She quickly went back to the kitchen where she left it only to find it gone. "Where is it? Ugh...this can't be! The gun! The curse! That's probably it. Matt, please, we have to find the gun. I think it's what brought me here."

Matt could tell she didn’t trust him and he couldn’t blame her under the present circumstances, and her place I might not trust me either. He told himself. Either case he couldn’t do anything about that, you just can force people in doing something they want to do. He thought.

Suddenly Penny runs towards the kitchen and he wondered why and fallowed right behind her. She started looking all over the place.

"Where is it? Ugh...this can't be! The gun! The curse! That's probably it. Matt, please, we have to find the gun. I think it's what brought me here." She said and looked upset, then it done on him that she said gun.
What gun Penny, did you bring a gun in here? Why would want to bring gun here, and why would want a gun unless you want to shoot someone. He asked her, then he stops.

“What curse Penny, you’re confusing the hell out of me. Please slow down and explain what you’re saying.” He told her. “Penny we’re the only one here, just you and me, you were alone in the kitchen and no one came in since. You didn’t have a gun when I saw you.” He told her.

She stopped. No gun? But she was holding it. Shining it before she hit his stupid sink! It couldn't have been gone!

"I-it's a Ketland Flintlock. I bought it at an auction, just because I thought it was awesome. I wasn't going to shoot anyone with it. Honest!" Pennyw as starting to panic. "I was just polishing it and then that's when I ran into your sink. It's...Someone was saying there was a curse to it. What if this was the curse? To be sent back in time and not go home...Oh my god...I want to go home..."

Unable to stop herself, she sank to the floor crying. She couldn't go back. Not without it. There was no other explanation she was transported back in the past.

Matt was stunned by what she just told him, and he had no reason not to believe her, it all made sense now to him. Why would someone make something like that, and how was Penny going to get home now if she dropped the gun in her place in 2014.

She drops down onto the floor crying. Oh my god … I want to go home. She said.

Matt sat down on the floor next to her and took her in his arms.

“I’m really sorry Penny, I wish there was something I could to do help you get back home, but I’m at loss with everything you told me. My offer still go if you want to stay here.” He told her.

She felt a little comfort in his arms and she couldn't help but notice that he was well-built under his shirt. "I don't know where else to go," she tried to stop crying and although she wasn't sobbing anymore, her tears still spilled down her cheeks.

"For a New Yorker, you're really nice," she said, trying to lighten her own mood. "I know so many who would spurn someone who needed help. That's why there are so many homeless where i come from."

She was kind of like one of them, desensitized to homeless people, but he didn't need to know that.

"So what am I supposed to do around here? I'm an investment banker and Lehman Brothers isn't even in existence yet. Bank of New York hasn't even thought of investment banking yet. I don't know how to cook and I pay someone else to do the cleaning for me...And honestly, I don't want to be more of a burden to you than I already am."

"I don't know where else to go," she said as he held her in his arms. Though she was not sobbing, her tears were still running down her face.

“Penny you don’t need to go any place, you can stay here for as long as you like, and tomorrow we’ll look again for that gun.” He told her.

"For a New Yorker, you're really nice," she said, and he looked at her smiling. “Thank you Penny, I think you’re very nice just by saying that.” He told her.

"I know so many who would spurn someone who needed help. That's why there are so many homeless where i come from." She said and made him think. Did New York changed that much in all that time, he said to himself.
“I wouldn’t know Penny, but I guess people do change.” He said wondering why.

"So what am I supposed to do around here? I'm an investment banker and Lehman Brothers isn't even in existence yet. Bank of New York hasn't even thought of investment banking yet. I don't know how to cook and I pay someone else to do the cleaning for me...And honestly, I don't want to be more of a burden to you than I already am." She told him and he thought she could be the one that could start that change.

Let’s, not worry about that now Penny, let’s take one thing at a time. I’ll teach you how to serve the customers and you can stay here till you get on your feet then you can decide what you want to do.” He told her still holding her in his arms realizing how nice she felt against his chest.

"Thank you..." She pressed her cheek to his chest. "I promise to try my best to not be useless."

For a moment, she stayed there until her tears dried. "So where do I stay? And as for clothes, I promise to pay it off. But, I can't go out to buy it. Could you please? I'm really sorry, I know it's embarrassing, but I have no choice." She knew that she would have to make do with her own underwear or none at all until she could buy her own with her own money. She couldn't possibly ask him to buy those for her! Maybe in her own time, buying something like underdrawers would only be an antique collector's frivolity, but in this time, those were the underwear women had to put up with. She could just imagine how embarrassing it would be for him to buy them.

Matt was glad she stopped crying and relaxed against his chest. "I promise to try my best to not be useless." She said a little later. Matt was not worry about that at all, she had enough problem already, and she seem to be a nice girl. He was also going to hire another girl, and he had one here that he could teach.

"So where do I stay? And as for clothes, I promise to pay it off. But, I can't go out to buy it. Could you please? I'm really sorry, I know it's embarrassing, but I have no choice." She said and he got on idea after what she said.

Penny I want to check something, please don’t think I’m trying to touch you OK. He reached behind her neck and looked at the tag inside the color of her dress. “You are size 6 Penny.” He told her.” there’s a tag inside with the name of the manufacture and the size. I’ll get you a dress for you wear now, then I’ll take you to the store to get want you like.” he told her.

"Thank you!" penny hugged him. "Thank you so much!"

She knew she wasn't out of the woods yet, but his was a big help. She didn't know how to repay him, but she planned on doing something for him once she found out what he liked.

"So, um...what now?"

“Thank you” said Penny hugging him. “Thank you so much!” She said.

Think nothing of it Penny, but you’re Welcome. Right now it’s too late to do any shopping, but I’ll go out early in the morning to get you a dress so you’ll have it for tomorrow. The stores are open till 8 tomorrow and I’ll take you shopping, and sure you’ll need other things to I guess, he said smiling.

"So, um...what now?" She said.

“Now we close shop and we go upstairs. I’ll show you your room and where things are that you may need are.” He told her, and led the way to the door that led up to the second floor.

"Okay," Penny followed him, but remembered something he said. "Didn't you say today was your birthday? How are you celebrating it?"

As they walked up the stairs, she couldn't help but look at his broad frame and his nice backside. It was a good thing he wasn't looking back especially because she had just told him off about looking at her legs.

"Didn't you say today was your birthday? How are you celebrating it?" She asked. He couldn’t say much and he didn’t want to hurt her feeling.

“Sometime there are more important things to take care of.” We’ll have to have it later. Right now you need my help and I’m going to help you.” He told her.

He opens the door above the stairs and walks in with Penny right behind him. It’s much bigger up here, because I rented half of the ground floor, and the rent pays for the mortgage of the whole building.” He told her.

He walks over to a door and opens it. This will be your bedroom. You have plenty room and closets for your clothes. The toilet is right next to your room with a connecting door that locks from both sides, and my bedroom his on the other side of the toilet. I use the rooms for storage at the moment.” He told her.

Penny walked into the room and couldn't help but feel disappointed. No TV, no air conditioning, no computers...no modern comforts. But what could she expect? Even the radio wasn't invented yet.

She walked toward the bathroom and saw the lack of toilet and shower. As she expected. It was going to be hard adjusting in this century without all the modern comforts she easily dismissed having. At least there was a tub, even though it was a wooden one.

"Thank you so much!" Penny said making a mental note to do something special for him for ruining his birthday. "But really, you don't have to do so much for me. I can just lie down and sleep. I mean, I am sleepy after all. Have fun on your birthday."

She couldn't be more thankful in having a kind man who would take her in and ask for very little in return. Definitely not the New York she knew.

I was going to tell you before that that this is the 1800, and judging by what you’re wearing, New York change quite a bit. I don’t mean to offend you Penny, you’re the most beautiful woman I have ever seen, with the most beautiful legs.

“You’ve already said thank you to me Penny you don’t have to thank me again.”

"But really, you don't have to do so much for me. I can just lie down and sleep. I mean, I am sleepy after all. Have fun on your birthday."

“Thank you Penny, but I’m not going anywhere now. You don’t think I would leave you alone were you?”
