The Winter Holiday Contest Support Thread

I just read the story "A Long Christmas Good Bye". Pardon me while I wipe a tear from my eye.
If you're not getting a better response than your first one, perhaps - sr71plt - is right.

Well... it seems to have picked up somewhat. Can't imagine why(?)

The last time I checked, you couldn't reach the story list from the home page. You can from the story index page, but not from the home page.

Well, that can't be helping, can it? Thanks. I've never read them before Halloween, so I only knew the main page way in.

I just now checked, and you still can't get in through the home page. You can reach the Halloween Contest entries and the Winter Holiday rules, but not the list of entries. This is the first time I've known this to be the case this far into a contest.

You can reach it through the story index page, and that might be the only place you can find all the stories. :(

So I just discovered. Maybe they don't know? I don't really get into the whole holiday thing until the turkey's in the oven on T-giving day. I was surprised stories were already up. Figured everyone would still be writing them.

Read and voted on JJ's. Not what I was expecting, I must say! Very nice.

It would be nice...

Be nice if they treated the story contest like the rest of the categories and posted the number of votes each story got...wouldn't it?

I don't understand. You can find the number of votes of all recent stories, at least, including the contest ones from the category 30 day and 12 month top lists. (There's a few hours delay in posting the numbers, though.)

One other tiny question...

What would happen if I got a brain storm and upon the midnight clear, a sequel snuck up and whacked me on the head? If I submitted it, would both stories be disqualified because the rules state "If you have a multi-chaptered contest-themed submission, please submit all chapters together as one story submission"? Just wondering as I'm 4500 words into the sequel...or do I just submit it as a non-contest entry?

Anybody know?

Hope I won't be flogged...

Yeah, SR-71, but...

Wouldn't you would have to know what category the story was submitted in...loving wives...incest...gay male...etc....

Good to know about that whole winter/Thanksgiving thing.

I guess if we used "when they start playing Christmas music" for the winter yardstick, then it would start right after Halloween, in some places.

Don't get me wrong: I'm no grouch, but two months of it is a little too much. Worst of all is when they have it in the stores that early. It makes me really hate the management and feel really sorry for the workers. I'm no communist, but I think they should be able to vote on it, or at least the customers. ;)

There's a reason Santa Claus appears at the end of the Thanksgiving Day Parade and does not come trick or treating on October 31.

So long as they're both self-contained stories with a beginning and ending, then you're okay. You can have the same characters, the same location, etc. There just has to be a new story around them.

I've been submitting new stories every Earth Day in my "Of the Wood" series. Each one centers on the same characters ( plus new ones ) and the same location. They even have the same theme, but the story goes different directions in each new tale.

Oh, and no "Chapter 2" "Part 2" etc. You're going to have to break out the clever titling cap.

I'm almost done with my holiday story! I'm excited, excited, excited!

Well... the voting is pretty weird on this contest. I went from 2.6 to 4.25 in 24 hours and I don't see there's been a sweep. What does that say?

two peas in a pod

I'm almost done with my holiday story! I'm excited, excited, excited!

:heart::heart:I just finished my story. It is almost 6,600 words. Will post soon. Let the games begin - joke, because I know that I'm late posting, and that they've already begun. Happy Holidays!:heart::heart:

Happy Holidays to you too.

I just now submitted one story, and I have another in progress. The first one is in the fetish category, which gets few votes, and it is likely to offend a lot of people. Maybe I should start campaigning for the last place (tm) prize already.

The other one is romance, which doesn't get much action either. It's rather sappy, but not offensive.

Hehe, you realise what carnage that would cause. There'd be frontrunners with their legs chainsawed off all over the place :D

Anyone know why the front page hasn't been updated? Looks like the contest is still pending from there.

Was that on "A Long Christmas Good Bye" ? I can't believe that was ever that low.

Read the story. I must admit, I was more than a little surprised to see your pen name come up.

I have to wonder how much fan mail you’re going to get from those bell ringers.

BTW, I liked the story.

Thanks, Old Blue, and thanks for your feedback too. Why would you be surprised to see my name here? I've written a lot of stories and I usually enter this contest. I don't know how many comments I will be getting from the Bell Ringers. Most of them probably won't read the story.

What Happened?

I just looked at the 30-day tops list. Unless I missed them, not one of the contest stories has made the top 250 list.

Hope things pick up after everyone has their annual dose of turkey.

Or looking forward to a sweep. There hasn't been one yet, has there? There are some real grinches out there this this year--of course in my case, I think I have a few personal ones who are on campaign.

You can't really tell much by those totals, since they are so much behind the actual vote totals, especially during a contest.

My first story has plenty of votes, which is a surprise. Unfortunately, most of them seem to be threes, with an occasional five and a few one bombs. It is probably closer to the bottom 250 than the top.

I haven't won the Last Place (tm) prize for a while. Of course, once the Hoover has gotten to work, I might not win it this time either. :(

ETA: I'm, pretty sure I have a few personal trolls too. :(

You wouldn't be a recognized Lit author without 'em. ;)

I keep thinking I'm getting close to finishing the story I'm working on when the characters demand more fleshing out (in all ways). I'm 16,000 words in and it's probably going to end up running 7,8,9 Lit pages or more. Oh, well. I want the exposure more than the prize. ;)

16,000 words? and you're not done yet?

Can I get it read by Christmas?

Will I have time to read and shop? Read and wrap? Read and bake?

Just playing, of course. ;)
