Thoughts on other authors using your character?

If they asked permission, why not? I'd like to see it before it went to publication so that I could make corrections and observations. Of course, I don't exactly have people beating down my door to ask permission to write about characters from 10+ years ago.

I mean, I own the copyright for my characters and filing a take down isn’t beneath me.

I had an “author” on this site who did a full translation of a 140k word work of mine in German with zero attribution in the story and when I called him out on it explicitly said it was a “better to ask forgiveness than permission” situation.

I was going to have that nuked from orbit, and only because the “author” agreed to repost it with an explicit paragraph stating it was a translation of MY work and I owned the copyright for the original AND his translation did I let it stay up.

That hurt. That was irrational of them. Not to mention unsportsmanlike.

It's one thing to translate, but removing attribution is almost as bad, if not just as bad, as passing it off as yours.

You're better than me in that regard, because I would've made a huge deal about that situation.

I was very flattered when @HelenL @Ommichron and @DawnDuckie borrowed my characters. But they ran drafts past me before publishing and nothing they published altered that narrative arcs of my characters.

In contrast, another author friend sent me a sequel they had written (and submitted!) to one of my stories that completely changed one of the characters and the outcome of my original story. I asked them to withdraw their story and they did. Despite that, I took their sequel as the compliment it was intended to be.

The Lit convention doesn't especially appeal to me as either a writer or a reader. I'm not sure why; in other stories I enjoy cross-overs between authors, with characters turning up in other's tales (e.g. the reference to Thirsty on Main in The Journey).

One why not is when the other author just wants a generic character (maybe sharing some physical attributes) to slot into their story without my character’s attributes, attitudes, and history being taken into account.

I'd very much want to see what they came up with, or at least hear their vision of what they think the character would be like and what the scenario is. Unless it's a really minor character I have no intention of fleshing out or using further, as much as I'd love to have someone with more clout use them, I wouldn't want them to do them disservice. It's less about me as an author and more respecting the characters.

Luckily, I don't think I'm in any danger of this happening 😆

When we wrote the Lights, Camera, Blood chain story, I knew from the start that the characters would be shared. Even so, I'll admit to never being entirely happy with how Mircalla was portrayed by the other writers. Or maybe it wasn't *how* they wrote her, just *that* they wrote her.

Same. It's a fun idea, I just have zero interest in participation, and I can't imagine anybody wanting to use any of my characters. There are maybe three or four writers here I would trust with that kind of thing, but otherwise, that's gonna be a 'no' from me, dawg.

For me the whole thing veers too close to sexting territory. I know that's not the idea, and probably it's miles from how it works in practice, but the idea of everyone sharing each other's characters for sex scenes is far more intimate than I'd feel comfortable with.

I'd be completely fine with people using my characters, provided they are portrayed faithfully. I dunno if there's a place to announce it but if anyone wants to use my characters, just dm me first so I can know about it and read the actual story once it's posted.

Oh, and I'd want to be given credit for the character.

Free-use character thread anyone?

I'm down for creating it if anyone's actually interested in the idea. Like PBP but for characters.

So two authors have written either me or my characters that are me-adjacent into stories: @Djmac1031 and @EStaccato With Dj, how we work is to swap rough drafts of sections of stories (say 500 - 2,000 words) as we write. So anything he writes I’m uncomfortable about gets addressed immediately.

With E, I was writing a story with her in it in parallel and we both wrote detailed character notes for each other. And we had been chatting for quite some time and reading each other’s works, so we had knowledge and trust established. She sent me a complete draft and 🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵

I offered up my OnlyFans semen-addict Cressie as she’s a total trope anyway. I wouldn’t let people other than Dj write Emma & Lily.

Just out of curiosity, does it bother you when ordinary readers interpret and see your characters differently from the way you imagined them when you wrote them? Would it bother you if they started, say, a thread on the forum about how they see your characters, and if their view differed significantly from your own?
This, I think, is the more interesting discussion.

If someone has an opinion of my characters that's drastically different from mine, it's not really my place to tell them what they should think of my characters. I might wonder if they're reading my character faithfully or if I'm faithfully translating them onto the page.

If someone started a thread on one or more of my characters I'd probably feel really exposed but I wouldn't hate it. I'd actually want as many people as possible to hit that thread.

I've mentioned this a few times, but this is what makes writing so special. With TV shows, movies, and other visual media the story is static (with the exception of choice-based video games, but even those have a narrow range of options), with little left up to interpretation and imagination. You get what you get. But the written word is so much more flexible and dynamic. Each person dreams up their own version. They're active participants in the creative process. It's like you give them the blueprints, and they build it in their heads. There are possibly as many versions of that story, those characters, as there are people who read it — maybe more, depending on if a person views it differently on subsequent reads. It's beyond your control, you can choose how much to leave up to them, how tightly you want to hold the reins, but ultimately, they're the ones consuming and imagining those worlds and characters. It leads to interesting interpretations and mental visualizations. Most people are going to imagine the characters at least a little different from someone else. It's what makes writing so beautiful, it's a collaboration between author and reader.

This is so true. When I read the Harry Potter series, the characters in my mind were so very different than the actors cast for the movies. For me, the movies were a downer. This is why I prefer books. YMMV

I have a statement in my profile allowing fan fiction. I think that's probably the best place to announce this.

I wouldn’t let people other than Dj write Emma & Lily.

So @EmilyMiller has mentioned our sharing of characters several times already, but figured I'd add my two cents.

The first time I wrote "Emily" into a story started as a joke. We were discussing... I don't remember exactly honestly... but something to do with story ideas. And I half jokingly pitched that maybe I would write a story about her.

Emily replied with words to the effect that me writing about her would be "fine, as long as you make me a nun." 😆

From that joke came The Devil And Angel Em and from THAT story an entire shared universe of stories grew over the years.

Throughout those stories we were in constant contact, no matter who was writing what. We'd review each other's work regularly, so we got to know each other's characters quite well.

Which came in very handy when it came time for me to borrow Emily's characters Emma, Lily, Lucy, Agrat and Ouriel for Between Angels And Demons and when Emily borrowed my characters Cozbi, Clarence and Asmodeus for Emma Agonistes and The Tragedy Of Lailah.

She later used Cozbi again in Plucky Penny And The Demon Of Doom, written for the first Lit Con Event last year.

There have been other things we've worked on and other characters we've swapped... Emily already mentioned her writing Jenna and me writing Amy.

So we've been at this awhile. We're comfortable with each other's personalities and writing styles, and we know each other's characters very well.

Obviously most authors here aren't doing this kind of thing, or at least not on any regular basis. Although the Lit Con Event is designed specifically to get authors interacting more with each other via character swaps.

Its fun and rewarding if you find the right person and characters.

Some people don’t understand the difference between “ask for forgiveness” and “didn’t think I would get caught”

Sometimes I prefer to binge the books before seeing the movies for this reason. One exception is The Expanse, which had pretty good casting for most of the characters. I read a few books first but the series was still being published and the characters changed in my head.
