Growing up in the San Francisco bay area, I also had occasional class trips to the beach at Monterey, about a 3-hour drive south. We would visit the Aquarium, so the trip could have the excuse of a science lesson! California's not much different. In public, there's lip service to sexual opnenness. But by court order, San Francisco repealed all those gay marriage licenses and can't issue any more new ones. Sex shops are only in the seediest neighborhoods. And women over 30 are stared at and made to feel uncomfortable for being there.

I thnk Oregon might be a bit freer about it. On our recent drive from California up to Seattle, I noticed that at every exit off the Interstate in Oregon, there's a clean, well-lighted, friendly-looking adult book, video, clothing, and toy store RIGHT off the highway exit. It's treated just like any other kind of store, not some place to feel ashamed to go into.
