to post or not to post

Thanks, Hugo. You're a true friend and a bear among bears.

But to answer Fem's question, it depends on several things. But let me take this opportunity to turn the table and ask Fem:

Discuss or cuss, it's your call.

I post where I feel comfortable. I like a hangout like the GLBT daily vibe or Abs place. Im writing my first story now so im really new at writing and dont feel ok with posting on writing threads. I like ta get ta know people better so i take lots of time reading posts and then just posting for fun mainly.

So far i like the peeps ive met on the AH but there are some who are really distant and not very open so its difficult to get ta know them. Then i'll usually stay clear.

I avoid political discussions. Politics is a subject I was never interested in, and as a result I know very little about it.

Endless threads are another no-no. Topics such as 'What song are you jammin to right now' and blurt threads are, in my opinion, excuses to bump one's post count. There is no discussion, and if there is, I'm not wading through 500 pages to find it.

Any thread attempting to get a certain person's attention I don't bother clicking on. Odds are, it's mainly a fluff thread and/or the subject matter is uninteresting to me.

Assuming I see a thread worth looking at, if I think I have something to contribute, I do. Occasionally I'm in a 'fluffy' mood, but more often than not, when I post it's because I want to talk about something fairly meaningful. That's what a forum is for, to me. The General Board is inundated with meaningless topics, but I hang out there a lot because it moves quickly and because most of the things I like to talk about don't qualify to be posted anywhere else.

Political threads are definitely a no-go for me. When I first joined Lit (shortly before I stumbled onto the AH), I made the mistake of going into a thread on the GB about the fires/protests in France several months back. Someone posted an extremely racist comment there, and I was so pissed that I had no choice but to nail his ass to the wall. I unsubscribed from that thread immediately after I tore into him and then I put the person on Ignore. I had learned my lesson.

Also, I tend to shy away from literary discussion threads. Especially the ones where actual writing techniques are talked about at length. Those kinds of threads, which I affectionately call "Talking Head threads," basically make my head hurt and my eyes glaze over. I don't like to talk about writing, I like to do it. But unfortunately I have posted in such threads on occasion in an attempt to be witty and in the know, and now I've decided that it's not worth the trouble. I feel intimidated and stupid when I go to those places, and that's not conductive to the practice of writing.

The GB is full of racists....it never fails to surprise me, but then, maybe they feel comfortable spouting off under cover of anonymity.

I used to post there occasionally, when Owera was still around.....especially to make fun of Ishmael, but now that she's gone, my partner in crime, it's not fun anymore.

The one time I was in the GB, it was that guy Hans_Schmidt or whatever the hell his name was that made me giggle.

His AV was some guy, himself maybe, torso draped with four (count 'em, four) guns.

"Gee Hans," I say to myself, "Four phallic symbols in a single picture. Are we compensating for something?" ;)

For folks like Fem and Aurora who feel uncomfortable on "writing" threads, here's a hint. Just ask a question. Most of us tend to elaborate on points already raised. To have someone ask a question instead of "sharing" their wit and wisdom would be, IMHO, a refreshing change of pace.

My posting habits are similar to several other folks such as Og and Hugo. I usually avoid political threads since they tend to depress the hell out of me. The few times I have participated, I've tried to limit myself to a two posts. If I can't get my point across in two tries, why bother?

For a long time I avoided the "on-going" threads, then Abs' hangout sucked me in, so to speak, and a once-a-day flirt with Sophia Jane is always fun.

With the exception of the Story Discussion Circle, I rarely visit other forums.

I've learned the hard way to stay out of the politcal threads. If you're new at writing and working on your first story this ask away. There are some excellent authors here who are more than willing to help. And BTW, welcome to writing.

I thought about what I said before, and then decided to come back and clarify.

All of what I said before it true. However, I also like so many different types of people, and their viewpoints, that I post all over the place... on the AH board.

If I have a really horrible rant or something, I'll post it on the General Board, unsubscribe immediately, and walk away, because... sometimes I just want to spit venom AT people... not just to the blank wall of a blog. (Generally, I don't link anyone I know to my blogs. That way they don't know what a bitch I really am.) I can trust the GB to take a rant and run with it for a few posts while I wander off feeling a bit less bottled up.

I know, that's strange, but so is a lot of my life. I like fluffy threads, and Happy Birthday threads, and intellectual debate and questions. Politics bore me, I'll pop in if I really have something to say, but I generally avoid them. I love the threads where writers ask and offer advice from everyone in general. I learn so much.

I also like random association and blurt threads. Sometimes you get some amazing stuff from them. I like threads about plot bunnies and plot bears. I like people ranting and people soothing. I like a lot of things.

I'm a thread junkie. I'm a Literotica junkie. I guess that really the reason I post, or don't post... it depends on the state of my fix.

I think I frighten too easily. I seem to get yelled at for one reason or another when I venture out of my usual threads, and then I just go hide again, lol.

"There is nothing to fear but fear itself."

I have no idea who I quoted, it was on my 6th grade Social Studies classroom door and I don't remember.. I think it was someone political.

Being afraid is okay. I lurked on the AH for -months- before I finally decided to post something. Hell, I lurked on Lit for nearly two years before I worked up the nerve to join and write something.

The thing about fear is, eventually, you get over it or it gets over you. :S Sometimes you get slapped or yelled at, but that's breaks. More often than not around here, people are wonderfully kind and forgiving and generous.

Not me, although I'm trying to bury my evil troll-alter-ego. The rest of these great guys.

I prefer not to post on the political threads.
Your political system is strange to me, and I wouldn't want to offend anyone.
I couldn't tell a Liberal from a Democrat! and frankly I'm not bothered.
Amicus can be fun. He certainly stirs things up.

The discussions on writing are usually interesting. Most posters are not 'showing off' but trying to help. I am more interested in the how and why of writing, now, than I was as a school kid. It also helps with the kid's homework.
