To the trolls

I saw that sort of thing happen in the contests I entered on Lit. So what I do now is, I just don't enter contests. That's what I meant by that. It's only by not entering contests that you avoid the phenomenon.
The only problem with that approach is that the trolls win.... Use an Alt or something but don't let them run you off....

I've never won anything, probably never will ...

No W's for me ...

No elusive E's ....

But yet the trolls still hit.

No clue why ... someone just trying to destroy what I built? Someone trying to tear down that part of me that is vulnerable enough to reach out and take a chance? Someone jealous?

Probably all of the above . .. maybe none of it.

Sure, it hurts ... I poured my heart and soul into most of those stories (sure there are some that I threw up for the sake of a contest or to satisfy a reader/fan's whim) but for the most part, those storiees are ... ME.

The comments matter to me ... the REAL comments ; not those snide remarks that come from the same people that didn't have anything better to do than bomb my work just because they could.

Maybe I'm too sensitive?

Like you Cyn, I have never had an E and I am certain I never will. I have never won anything and I probably never will. Nevertheless, trolls bomb me. As for comments, I think most trolls don't leave comments. They drop their one-bombs with no given reason. Those that leave comments at least give a reason, not a good one, but a reason. Sometimes it is because one of the central characters is a rat. I take such a comment as a compliment.

Otherwise, I think the motives of trolls is varied. Mostly, it is to tear down something they can never do. Frequently, I am sure, they have other motives, sometimes ulterior. There isn't much we can do about them.

Agreed. One wins by not giving tuppence for their silly votes.

That said, I was pleasantly surprised in the competition. I didn't notice that I received any sort of trollish attention. Now that I think about it, I'm a bit chagrined. Evidently they thought I wasn't up to much of a challenge this time.

Where are my one-bombs, damnit?

I have one of those pretty W's on a story for the earth day contest last year.

A few weeks ago I had over thirty-five of the pretty H's.

However, that has changed with the hot stories. Like Rob said that win will never go away no matter what happens to the ratings on anything that I write.

If I lowball someone's story, I post why or I sent feedback to their account. Hell I SIGN what I do... ya know why... because then that makes me accountable for what I put down.

I have seen people destroy my stories, I have seen them destroy friends of mine's stories... sat one night and literally watched seventeen hot stories get tanked in UNDER thirty minutes because someone told another person "This story is about (insert a name here)."

I think the only thing that will force people to be honest about what they are doing is to make it so that the authors can see the voting.

Example: Rob really thinks one of my stories sucks. He votes a one on it.... I get a listing next to the stories of who voted and what they voted. I would see that he voted a '1' on the story.

Each time a registered Lit member votes the page says "Thank you for voting (insert your name)!" I don't see why it won't be easy to make it so that the authors could also see who voted what on what stories.

As for the trolls.... grow a set! Take out your bullshit vendettas in some other fashion... better yet, grow the hell up.
