Iceland means "Land of Ice" (Ísland in Icelandic). Popularly (but falsely) attributed to an attempt to dissuade outsiders from attempting to settle on the land, it is in fact the early settler/explorer Flóki Vilgerðarson who coined the name after he spotted "a firth full of drift ice" to the north. This occurred in spring after an especially harsh winter during which all his livestock had died and he started debating whether to leave.
