Looks like a place to go to escape...

Hailing from Raton, New Mexico in the late 50's, the Fireballs were New Mexico's first Rock & Roll recording band to become internationally known. The group was christened the FIREBALLS® after their standing ovation performance of "Great Balls of Fire" at the Raton High School PTA talent contest in New Mexico, USA...January 1958. Fireballs recordings and songs are heard in the soundtracks of the following films: Forrest Gump , Mermaids , Congo , Dogfight , From Dusk Till Dawn , Box Of Moonlight , The Real Blonde, with others being negotiated for upcoming films.

Nello Ferrara, the son of Salvatore Ferrara, created the famous Atomic FireBall in 1954. At this time in his life he had the idea to develop a spicy candy. When the product was presented to the candy industry, the capacity at Ferrara Pan was limited to 200 cases per day. Within three weeks of sending samples to Ferrara Pan brokers, orders were rolling in at a rate of over 50,000 cases per day, far beyond the capacity Ferrara Pan could handle at that time.

The Nobel prize resulted from a late change in the will of Alfred Nobel. He did not want to be remembered after his death as a propagator of violence. He invented dynamite.

Some more facts on the

In medieval Italy kisses weren't taken, or given, lightly. If a man and a woman were seen embracing in public they could be forced to marry!

The term French kissing interestingly enough was coined by Americans in the 1920's because they thought that everything that the French did was so overtly sexy and provocative to a point of being offense. Whereas in France they don't call it French kissing they call it "soul kissing" or "deep kissing" much like the Roman's do.

Oh la la!

:D

Here is probably the most useless (to me) piece of trivia residing in my brain: Avagadro's Number is 6.02*10**23, representing the number of elementary entities (atoms, molecules, ions or other particles) in one mole of a substance.

Chuck Norris destroyed the periodic table, because he only recognizes the element of surprise.

I have lots of useless trivia in my head, the most useless for me is that polytetraflouroethylene is also known as teflon

Some Star Trek trivia... figures something like this would come from me. ;)

The first pilot of Star Trek starred Jeffrey Hunter as Capt. Christopher Pike. NBC ordered a second pilot because they didn't like the first one (this was the first, and so far, the only time in TV history a network ever did that) Hunter demanded too much money for the second pilot, so Star Trek execs looked for a replacement. And the first person they called was... ...Jack Lord.

Yep, you read that right. Jack Lord, of "Hawaii 5-0" fame, was their next choice for captain of the Enterprise. However, he wanted too much pay as well (50% of the show's frandchise intake), so the next person they naturally turned to was... ...Lloyd Bridges.

Weird huh? Unfortunately, Bridges was already committed to another show (I believe it was "Sea Hunt" or "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", something along those lines). Of course, the next actor considered for the part was... ...Lee Marvin.

HUH??? Thank goodness Mr. Marvin was under contract to do two more movies and wouldn't have time for a weekly TV show, otherwise we never would have gotten... yes, you guessed it: William Shatner, who's character went through about a dozen name changes (January, Flagg, Winter, Drake, et al) before being christened Captain James T. Kirk.

Continuing with the Star Trek trivia....

Martin Landau was originally offered the role of Commander Spock, but declined. Leonard Nimoy, who accepted the part, took over the role of disguise-expert on "Mission: Impossible" (1966) when Landau left that show. Mission: Impossible was also filmed on the same lot as Star Trek, therefore when "Star Trek" (1966) ended, Nimoy merely crossed the street to go to his new job.

...another bit of Star Trek lore.

Leonard Nimoy (Mr. Spock) and DeForest Kelley (Dr. McCoy) were, at first, slated to play opposite roles. Thank goodness Gene Roddenberry (Star Trek's creator) changed his mind. Can you picture Nimoy as a grumpy, cynical doctor and Kelley with pointed ears? LOL. :D It never would have worked, IMO.

One more...

Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura) seriously considered quitting Star Trek and leaving the show, because she felt her part was not important enough. While attending an NAACP fund raiser, she agreed to meet one of the key note speakers (a huge fan of the show). She told him what she was planning to do, and the gentleman convinced her not to leave Star Trek, because "you are an inspiration and have opened the door of opportunity to young, talented black men and women everywhere. You have changed the face of television forever."

A direct quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Pop Rocks (UK: Space dust) is a carbonated candy with ingredients including sugar, lactose, corn syrup, and flavoring. The candy is made by mixing its ingredients and heating them until they melt, then exposing the mixture to pressurized carbon dioxide gas (about 600 pounds per square inch) and allowing it to cool. The process causes tiny high pressure bubbles to be trapped inside the candy. When placed in the mouth, coming into contact with saliva, the candy breaks and melts, releasing the carbon dioxide from the tiny 60 atm bubbles, resulting in a popping and sizzling sound and leaving a slight tingling sensation. The bubbles in the candy pieces can be viewed when aided by a magnifying glass.
In 2006, Dr. Marvin Rudolph, who led the group assigned to bring Pop Rocks out of the laboratory and into the manufacturing plant, wrote the definitive history on Pop Rocks development, titled, "Pop Rocks: The Inside Story of America's Revolutionary Candy"
