It was the same reason (jealousy) that some people wanted a national day. "It looks so fun when they are out in the streets celebrating".Ugh.. a national Day is fine.. but, that also means it should embrace the whole country.
Here we have been a bit jealous of the Norwegians national Day 17. Maj.. and sometimes we do talk about making Grundlovsdagen to our national Day.
Well, they have something to celebrate. Their independence. Sweden let them lose as late as 1905 so they have something to be happy about.
If you like to create new traditions you have to have the people behind it, and it must be something most people are happy about. A war ending, a revolution, independence from years of being part of a country and so on.
Our national day feels forced and people do not invade the streets and wave flags and sing the national anthem. They invade the shopping mall instead.
