Yes, I've watched Spirited Away. Absolutely amazing movie. I had a little crush on dragon-boy (I watched it in Chinese, and I've no idea what the English version names are). I cried when he got his memory back.

In manga, there are definitely some extreme stuff. I don't think I've seen you around in these forums before, Mark, so hello from me (or maybe my 2-second memory is failing me once more)

Glad you agree on spirited away, the english dub names are (if your interested)- Chihiro for the girl and Haku for the dragon boy while the sorceress's name is yubaba.

Phar your right about Urotsukidoji, it opened my eyes a bit too. You should check out spirited away if you can.

Its great to see a multitude of people on the forum from all over the UK.

I was chatting to a few friends of mine the other day and we were talking about going travelling Vienna is a place I really want to go to. But during our conversation it transpired that we haven't even seen the whole of the UK yet!

There are some beautiful places to visit in this granduous country of ours so my question is where would you say is worth visiting?

Where is our answer to the eiffel tower? Where is our answer to the empire state building? What museums put others to shame?

Well I will start then. Winchester is an amazing town. I was fortunate enough to be able to frequent the place many times. Apparently King Alfred's roots lie right within this town. It also has a beautiful cathedral. My friends seemed to enjoy it for its Pubs (I dont drink so no comment there).

Also, I reckon Wigan in Manchester is a quality night out. Apparently Wigan girls dont wear knickers! People are so friendly its just worth the laugh.

Our small town museum puts some to shame by its unique location in a building that was once the local County hall and was designed and built by Wren's school of architects at around the same time St Paul's was constructed.

It's housed in the gallery room above the arches.

I think, when it comes to 'things to see' London is really quite unequalled (as far as Europe goes anyway). If you think about it, London does have landmarks that are instantly recognisable: Buckingham Palace, British Museum and so on. We don't have hugely famous monuments as such, but there are no shortage of things to see.

Hiya Nem, hope you're having fun. I'm having a good weekend so far. I've ate tons of watermelon. Love watermelon. I also borrowed a few (okay, 10) books from the library. I swear somebody with a huge historical romance fixation returned all her books or something, because there were about 10 times the usual amount there. I have a thing for historical smut. Alas, the one I read wasn't particularly smutty (but would fit in all right on lit) but there was tons of interesting stuff about emancipation and the woman's place during the 1890s etc. There's a rather horrific term used for the widows whose husbands had been killed in battle and were unable to support themselves etc.--surplus women. SURPLUS woman. Believe it or not, this term was coined by the male protagonist. I suppose, that China has 'surplus men' at the moment.

wow, I have a lot to catch up on.

Ok, have just returned from a weekend at a friend's house generally getting wasted and playing mahjonng (not shogun, big difference although they both involve the tiles, but I digress) I've been able to get my latest fix of anime.

I've managed to obtain Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu! (comedy), Hellsing (fantastic anime, nothing to do with that god-awful Van Hellsing film that came out, this actually holds true to traditional vampire mythos) and FLCL (this is especially fantastic because it is so wonderfully random!)
I say weekend. I got back last night, passed out and had an anime day. I've only left my PC when I've had to.

I do have a set of Katanas but they are of chinese make so they're not of fantastic quality, however I do intend to eventually purchase a swedish blade (the finest swordsmiths now that Japan has made it illegal to forge Katanas) that has been folded and hardened correctly, however these can cost up to about £15000 depending on the quality. Somehow I think I'll be saving up for a long time.

As far as the martial arts go, I'm not a master in anything yet. I'm only 21 at the moment! I've done all sorts but that's just so I can see what's good about all the different styles and incorperate them into my own (e.g. western boxing has good upper body defense but crap lower defense, however Karate is much more the opposite so both can mesh. Similarly something like chinese boxing can allow the correct methods for less honourable martial arts tactics) My personal martial arts philosophy is that if you can think fast and move fast, you can beat anyone. I must be doing something because I've managed to beat my jeet kune do sensei almost half the time we spar. And he's a black belt 3rd dan.

the artwork on Rurouni Kenshin is good, but a distinct difference has to be made as far as the film and the TV series go. The film is a lot darker, the tv series is mostly a kids show, both have good artistry but the themes differ greatly.

Spirited away also rocks but as far as Hayao Miyazaki's work goes, I prefer Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind (Warriors of the Wind in the UK market) The last samurai was a very good film and hollywood only bent the truth a little. Also it helped prove that tom cruise can act (I'm not sure which is more shocking)

Before I forget, I'd like to say a big 'Hajimemashite' to Nemesis Enforcer, hob_knob, Marsipanne, phar, pop_54 and everyone else who has made me welcome here!

On a quizzical note, how many people are into traditional fantasy fiction? Such as Tolkien (although he does really overkill on the descriptions -> do I really care about the size of the shire?) or maybe more recent authors like Terry Goodkind or Robert Jordan. Let me know peeps!

Plasmacaster, you can play mahjong????? I LOVE MAHJONG! I'm addicted to that kind of game--you know, where it depends half on luck, half on skill. I like playing 'hearts' too.

Martial arts-obsessed is good, you know (in my books, but I'm a bit of a weirdo). Anime-obsessed is also good. Do you read Robert Jordan/Terry Goodkind? I've read some RJ, but I'm not fond of him--too similar to TOlkien, who I don't like. Terry Goodkind, I adore. My favourite fantasy author, actually.

btw im am so jealous of your prowess at JKD and martial arts in general would give anything to be any good at them but thanks to a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament iv'e got no chance (too much damage for any sort of contact sport so no footie either )

Damn, I just remembered something interesting: I've met an Olympic gold medallist before!! I was reminded because I saw her on TV today, cheering on the Female Singles Table-tennis. The person I met was the gold-medallist of 96--Deng Yaping (who was named by the commentators as possibly the greatest female table-tennis player ever--no doubt she'll be chuffed). I met her a few years ago (can't remember when exactly) and she came round my house and had dinner. We met a few other times too. I remember her being very, very good at mahjong, especially setting up the 'pai' (I don't know what the english word is--but they're the white blocks with the symbols on them). Her hands were really fast.

Magician by Raymond E Feist is very good (although he did bring out tons of books soon after which i thought was a bit rushed). Read halfway upto the second book of Lord of the Rings, it was pretty intence reading. Read the Hobbit years ago and really enjoyed it. I highly recommend the author Robin Hobb, have read most of her books and she is simply amazing. I think anyone who is into sci-fi/ magic novels etc should experience a Robin Hobb novel........ she really is that good.

Have you seen "Born on the Fourth of July", Cruise is very good in it.

How long have you been practicing martial arts for? Umm... Your sensei is probably letting you win, would not be very conjucive to a students confidence to kick the shit out of him/her, especially when they're starting off... i assume you've just started training under him? If it's non or touch contact sparring and you're against someone of a much higher level to yourself, you can think that you're better that you are because your apponent has a level of control beyond your perseption (and therefore not notice when they score points against you or as is most often the case, not notice a movement as a form of attack). I would like to add, that if you've done "all sorts", it is most likely that your experience of martial arts far exceeds mine, and therefore you are kick ass.... and as such should ignore all of the above comments.
