Pengy: I think anyone into anime has seen akira a few times. I've seen it loads of times and tehre are still one or two moments in it that are very.... erm... 'japanese' and so are a little tricky for most european audiences to get. Of course, i happen to lack any form of japanese heritage so most of this stuff I only managed to get when I started learning about Japan's history and culture. Of course that WAS a long time ago, and I was probably too young to have legally purchased the video, thankfully my dad had bought it for my brother so I saw it loads of times

incidentally, did you know that it is NOT illegal to see a film if you are underage, and it is NOT illegal to drink alcahol underage, however it is illegal to buy things that you are under age for. Funny how laws work really isn't it?

Hi Plasmacaster. Akira is the only anime i've seen, although i have heard that soem of it can be quite erotic and adult in nature. Is that just the comic books, or films as well?

Well some can be pretty erotic. Take Urotsukidoji for example, its was dismissed by most critics as being 'pornographic and violent' which is probably why its the best selling anime ever.

But don't think that anime is nothing but the stuff that's imported over to europe, there are a lot of TV series in anime. Unlike most places where if you're going to do a sitcom you would be most likely to use live action with actors and a set and all that. Japan has mastered the art of cheap animation and now a TV series is just as likely to be made as an animation as a normal series.

Plus, they rock. Check out Rouruni Kenshin, Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu and Hellsing. These are the one's that I'm watching most at the moment.

Jubilant, I am, Nem, because I found out that 'The Tale of the Body Thief' is being rereleased in the UK!! Woohoo! Lestat has sex! Drinks orange juice! So excited about getting it. Damn, now in an Anne Rice mood. Really want to read 'The Mummy' and 'Cry to Heaven' now.

Not that up on anne rice, though I have read a few of her works. Servant of The Bones was an alright work. I usually prefer something a little less pulpy. No offense to anne rice or her fans. (after all, i dont mind reading fantasy pulp fiction)

You're right though, they dont show any good anime on TV in britain (although they did have a manga evening on channel 4 in the mid-90s. did Heroic Legend of Arislan and 3x3 eyes (bloody fantastic by the way)) but that's what the internet is for!
