Under The Fur

Reggie

Things had been strange for a moment, a man bursting through the dining room door, saying hi as he ran through and then there was silence once more.
I looked up and glanced around at the people sitting there. No one spoke for a time.
The silence was shattered when a young man introduced himself as Brad and spoke of his own reason for being here. He inquired of the rest of us and all I could do was sit there quietly, working up the courage to introduce myself to the rest of the group.
When I thought I finally had it Scott entered the hall and sat down, across the table from me. I smiled timidly and was about to answer his question when the doc's voice chimed in over the intercom.
The things that she described, were horrible and sent my stomach twisting and turning into knots. Surely if I had anything on my stomach it would be lost. I looked up for a moment at the speakers in the ceiling then looked back at Scott.
I just smiled at his comment, listened to him and watched him stare, feeling a little uneasy. Was there something on my face? I stifled the urge to rub at my face.
"It's ok Scott....right? It doesn't bother me." That was a lie, but he already looked as though he felt bad enough. "I am a med student and I am also schooling to be a vet. Where I come from, it is good to be schooled in both fields. I came in hopes of getting to work with the animals and learn more. Why have you come....I mean what do you do?"

Scott

I raze an eyebrow at her answer “I smile saying I’m learning to be a vet for exotic animal and a zoologist.” I pas for a second trying not to star at her to much. “I’m thinking of going to Africa after this to study the animals there in the wild.”

I smile and look dawn at the others I shrug as look back at her “I jumped at the chance to com her I new that there wouldn’t be a lot of pepal her I’m not comftable arund crodes.”

I reach over to a plate that has some dinner rolls on it taking one. I open it and spread some butter over it before taking a bite. I let a small move of delight escapes my lips. I swallow saying “This is the best I’ve ever had like it just came out of the oven.”

Reggie

"Africa would be wonderful to see. There are so many different types of animals there. I know how you feel about crowds, I am much the same."
I lowered my gaze from his and stared at my hands. The bread I am sure was good but the doc's words kept running through my head and I dared not eat anything yet.
A man came in from the kitchen and opened the bottle of wine at the head of the table. As he began to pour the wine into the glass before each person "There has been a delay with dinner, and as I am sure you all heard with the hostess as well. Please enjoy a bit of wine while you wait." He finished pouring when he had everyones glass full and left the hall.
I had thanked the man as he came by and filled my own glass and looked up at Scott. "I wonder how things are going. Think this person will give themselves up?"
I picked up my glass and took a sip of the wine. It was wonderful and warmed clear to my stomach.

Jaenelle

I wondered back into the dining area where the guest had already began to help themselves with the bread and wine.

"I hope everyone is hungry. We brought in the very best cooks we could find for you. You have your choice of wine. Name a year and kind and we probably have it somewhere in our wine cellers bellow."

I walk over to Reggie and Scott." Sophie is doing fine I hope. Is there anything special in her diet I need to get for her? just let me know and I'll order it"

I walk back over to my seat where Brad has placed himself next to.

"Hope everything is going well so far on our lovely island for you"

Arlette

" Oh well theres not a lot to know... Im studying Interior Design and am here to go away from family, friends and everything else I know for a while, I accepted the job because it involves animals and I just love them, there are animals I am afraid of... mostly insects.. but anyway.. I... " , before Arlette could continue a voice was heard through some speakers... issuing a warning to a certain thief on the island... the description that came next was just to horrifying to imagine...

" My god, just what kind of experiments are those... ", Arlette began getting a little nervous and for once questioned her decision to come to work on this island, surrounded by strangers...

"It's ok," he reassured her, glancing back at the stairs. Two things began rattling in his brain, but in all honestly, he wasn't sure about either of them. This woman was a doctor.
Still, that didn't explain all of this.
Something fishy was happening here.
The poor woman though, she seemed terrified just at the images that were now blaring at them. She didnt' have to be so graphic, everyone on the island was about to eat dinner.
"It's ok," he lied, "I'm sure it's just a weird side effect, you know, like eating bad clams or something. I can't believe someone would actually break in here though. Whatever she stole must be worth a fortune to someone, to bypass all of this security stuff."
He took a reassuring glance at her, "In either case, there's no need to worry. THere are like a dozen guards here, all armed. Whoever this guy is, they'll catch him, and deal with him, and we'll be doing some boring old tests by morning."
He didn't know if that did the trick or not. In truth, he wasn't sure if it did anything for him either.
"You know, Arlette, if he were going to come this way, he'd have done it by now. You sure you don't want to go get something to eat? Let the real people handle this. Come on, I'll escort you, make sure nothing bad gets you."

Arlette

" Yes well, you are probably right, theres nothing to really worry about, and all those side effects were used as a way to convince that thief to turn himself in... wothout causing any more trouble... ".

Arlette tried to convince herself and find reasurance in his words... " I would like to get something to eat, Im havent had much to eat, lets go to the dinning room... ". Arlette smiles at him and prepares to follow him, assuming he may know the locationof the dinning room, she felt totally lost in this house...

Rachel Williams, Dr.

Strumming my nails on the desk, I waited for as long as I could stand to before my stomach growled again in hunger. Picking up the phone I dialed security's extension and set up the game plan. Tripple everything on the island from shore to shore inside and out. Watch, take her down with tranquilizers, if need be bullets.
I stationed three guards in my lab alternating every two hours and made my way to the dining room.
Walking in, everyone looked up at me with hooded eyes. Even Nick gave me a strange look. Walking over to my place I sat down and chimed the bell for dinner to begin. I glanced at each person in the eye and asked,
"What?" Nothing was said, like that comercial, you could hear a pin drop right about now. Everyone averted their eyes or looked elsewhere, and Scott just stared at me.
"You all know I am a DNA engineer. Nothing cruel is done to those animals. My field study is actual mutating DNA strands.." I knew someone was going to ask what I meant by that, so I held up my hand so I could continue.
"I am looking for a way, in human DNA and Animal DNA to remove the bad genetics.. Make sense?" I fell silent as the Salmon was served.

Nick escorted Arlette into the dining room, pulling out a chair for her. At this time, dinner had already been put out. It seemed as if it were going to be delicious.
Nick just sat there, his fork hindering around the salmon though. Rachel seemed to know what was on everyone's mind, but she wasn't answering their questions.
In fact, if he wasn't mistaken, she was trying to put them all at ease. It was that fact that made Nick all the more nervous.
It wasn't the horridness of the effects that puzzled him so, it was the fact that she knew, in so much detail, what the D.N.A would do inside a human body.
That wasn't the disturbing part though. One could overlook that, which might be possible when dealing with certain things in the lab. Nick knew he wouldn't mess with anything unless he knew what it would do if it got into his system.
The thing that concerned him the most was her apparent antidote for the animal D.N.A. She had worked on this so much, that she produced something to stabilize an animal's genetic code inside the human body.
Most of the people here were nothing more than kids. Guys and girls just barely old enough to drink, but Nick wasn't fooled that easily. After dinner, he would have to get the infamous doctor in private for a few words.
"How about a toast?" he said, as if he had just come out of a dream, "To our first night on thie island, and to the Doctor, who made all our bank statements a little bigger."
Nick raised his glass.

Jaenelle

I stood to meet his gesture.

"To us all and a sucessfull couple of months"

I looked over at mom who still looked a bit concerned about her stolen research and our recent intruder. I took a drink of my chardonay and sat back down again.

"Question Aunty.... do you happen to have a DNA strand of a Great White Shark? If not.... any species of shark will do."

When he heard her say that this was a way to remove genetic defects in humans, he wanted to know the answer to this question. Of all the animals on the planet..... sharks never got cancer.....EVER! It probably came from millions of years of evolution. If he could use his computer to trace which gene it was in the shark DNA code, he could use her splicing technique to finally cure the crippling disorder.

He sat there and took a sip of his Coca-Cola (what did you expect... he is only 18).

(ooc- Well.... that is going to be my only post for the day. I'm going out to celebrate my birthday. Take care and have fun everyone!)

Cynthia

An hour and a half later, the elusive cynthia masters passes out from the incredible pain and internal bleeding.

Blissfully her death causes her no pain as her heart burts as she lies in unconscious bliss in a cove by the beach.

When the tide rises, she is embraced by the sea from which all life came. And poetically, this life returns.

Dr. Rachel Williams

"Yes Brad, I have the DNA.. But figuring out how to extract from it has been failed so far. I am hoping to accomplish that as soon as possible. But the DNA is unstable. Take the wrong thing it just explodes. I've tried it a few times, but my synthetic hosting DNA won't fuse to the shark's sample." I paused for a moment and smiled a little secretive smile.
"Nothing horrible is done, I know you all heard what was said over the intercom, but you should all know the DNA isn't injected into the animals once I have taken it out and altered it. It's mainly just constructing new forms of Dna to take care of bad genetics and to improve the strand."
I didnt inform them they were the test subjects. "I do however use my assitants by way of injecting the blank dna and taking samples every few days to see if your dna has fused to it. If your DNA accepts the DNA you are a host. You produce nothing strange or anything. I keep testing my 'blank' DNA strand in various people to make sure all can use it. When I can take out the bad DNA or cancer cells or diabetics, the world will be a better place." I smiled and toasted.
After dinner was over and desert was served I excused myself from the table.
"I would like to see you all bright and early in the morning. If you wish to help science and man kind still, be in my lab for the first injection of this serum. Good night all." I walked out and to my rooms.

Jaenelle

Dinner was finished and I hoped all nerves would be put to ease in the name of science. I stood and rose at my place

"Goodnight ladies and gentlemen, I must retire too. Today has been a long one and I need my sleep to start in the morning."

I turned slightly to Brad.

"Brad, maybe later you could show me a bit of the music you brought. I've been dying to hear some of the new rock and metal from the 'real world'. Maybe if you have any a bit of industrial or electronica would do fine. Stop by my room when you finished and we shall see what goes"

I turned and retired to my room changing into somthing comfortable, a black sweat skirt (pants are way too difficult to deal with with the tail and all)and a red strech tank top. I curled up on the pillow in front of my fire place and started reading my newest addition to my book collection 'Lord of the rings' which I found incredibly intriguing and have actually read a few time before.

Reggie

Dinner was delightful, but the tension I could have done without. I was exhausted and quietly excused myself from the table. A shower and a good nights sleep is what I really needed and from what Dr. Williams had told me earlier the work would begin early in the morning.
I found my way slowly back to my room, this place was a maze and I hoped that I would not find myself lost at any time. I entered my room and softly closed the door behind me. Scratching Sophie's ears, I praised her for being such a good girl while I was gone.
"Tomorrow" I said as I dug through my suitcase looking for a night gown "We can work on finding you someone to play with while I am working." She gave me a playful growl and laid her head down watching me.
I laid my big t-shirt over the edge of the bed and went to the bathroom. "Hope she was telling the truth about that serum, I didn't expect to come here and be harmed." I muttered to myself as I turned on the shower. Scalding hot is what I liked, when it reached that point I stripped down and stepped in washing away all the thoughts along with the dirt and grime.
"She wouldn't harm anyone in the name of sience. And the things that could be accomplished with her reasearch were phanominal." I spoke again out loud to no one in particular but myself.
It worked, I had put all of that out of my mind and was calm as I finished up my shower and prepared for bed. A short time later I laid down and stretched out on the bed waiting for sleep to claim me.

OOC. Happy belated birthday wishes Suik, oh and babysitter I don't see why you must kill off Cynthia, your goal of the experiment gone bad could still be pulled off. I have thought of something if your interested, and are still reading this.

Nick gave her a very odd look as the doctor made her way out of the room. She had decided to leave in a hurry, hadn't she. All of this talk about shop must have spooked her. Somehow, he doubted that if this intruder hadn't done anything, they wouldn't know half of the story they knew now.
The only trouble is, which part is true, and which is she making up. There's always something funny about a person doing experiments on their own island, hundreds of miles away from any sort of law. He hadn't seen it before, but now... in the back of his mind something was forming.
An idea? Perhaps, now it was simply unfounded, but it was a seed that was planted in there, and it had taken root.
"Goodness," he looked over at Arlette, rememberingt she didn't even get a tour of the place or anything, "I'm so sorry, the good doctor must have forgotten about you. Come, my dear, we'll go find your room together. I'm sure out of the hundreds in here, one has to be yours."
He grabbed her suitcase.

Brad went to his room and picked up his laptop. He then picked up some MP3 cards and went to Jaenelle's room with them. Outside the door, he started to get nervous. He always did around beautiful women. But he took a few deep breaths, then knocked on the door.

"Jaenelle... it's me.... Brad.... I have those songs that you wanted to listen to, may I come in?"

And so he stood there, waiting on a reply.

(ooc thanks papillon24 and Shoty98 for the birthday greetings. I would like to state that I won't be able to reply as often as I used to due to school starting again, but I will continue with the story. Thank you for being understanding)

Jaenelle

I was a bit startled by the knock being so wrapped up in y book

"Come on in Brad, I'm just reading."

Arlette

Over the copurse of Dinner Dr. Rachel gave a brief explanation of the experiments that were done on the island, although Arlette was not sure if she did it to inform or to calm everyone after hearing the horrible warning given by her over the speakers a while ago...

As soon as dinner was over Dr. Rachel and other guests retired to their rooms... thats when Arlette remembered... she was not given a room!

Luckily Nick offered to accompany and help her find a room for her... He was being so nice to her, and to believe a while ago he watched as she entered the house like a thief... sneaking through a window...

" Oh my, this is beginning to get embarassing, I mean I am sure you have tons of work and much more important things to do on this island than watching over me... ".

Nick smiled at her, her honesty and openness. She seemed like a little girl almost there. He couldn't help but feel like he wanted to help her, protect her.
Do whatever he could to make her smile.
Glancing around he stared at her wide eye, "Well, if I don't do it, I think you'll spend the night here. I would hate to see that. Come on, I think everyone else went upstairs, that's probably where most of the rooms are. I'm lucky enough to have something in one of the other buildings. A whole huge place to myself. Kinda lonely too."
Nick shrugged his shoulders, "I suppose I have the animals to keep me company though. Come on, we'll get you all settled in."

Arlette

" Thanks again Nick, I really appreciate your help... dont know what I would do without you helping me... Id be lost and hungry... probably... ", Arlette laughs and smiles at Nick.

" You do like animals dont you.. I mean of course you do, you are a vet! I meant you are ok living just with their company? " , Arlette follows Nick as her carries her back and starts to walk in the direction of the stairs...

Reggie

As I lay there awake things began to run through my mind. I didn't know about my family's history, what would Dr. Williams find with the blood tests? That I didn't know either, and feared the worst. "If it's something bad she will send me back, and I will not have it." I whispered softly.
Sophie heard the aggitation in my voice and let out a low rumble of a growl. "Calm down Sophie things are fine." I knew better but it always seemed to calm her down to hear it from me.
I felt a monstrous headache coming on, all this thinking, how could it not? I rose from the bed and went to my suitcase, digging around inside for my pills and the special little bottle I brought with me.
"There we go this always does the trick." I muttered when I retrieved the two bottles. I popped the top off the medicine bottle and took three of the loritabs. To wash them down I had the old sippin whiskey in a flask. A few drinks and they were down.
Maybe it was time to leave....before the blood tests arrived, and I was thrown out anyway. I didn't want to go back home, there was nothing left but my sister, and surely she did fine without me. No, no I knew what I had to do.
I took a long drink from the flask, felt my head spin wildly for a moment and looked down at Sophie. I couldn't take her with me and she would be safer here anyway. There was a vet if I remembered hearing right, and enough people to care for her. That was all the incentive I needed.
I stumbled to the small desk and took out paper and pen. My eye sight was begining to blur but it was not bad enough that I couldn't see to write.

"Dear Dr. Williams,
I had to go, away from here. I don't know what you'll find in the blood tests you did on me, but I don't want to wait around and find out that I will be sent home. I leave here Sophie, Jaenelle takes such good care of her and Sophie seems to like her so.... please, watch over her.
Thank You for the opportunity, to come here, wish I could have stayed.
Sincerely
Reggie"

Setting down the pen, I turned on my heel to leave the room. It was far beyond dark now and all were alseep in there beds. Quietly I stumbled through the house until I reached the front door. It creaked slightly when I opened and closed it. I stepped back and looked at the house in relief, no lights had come on and no one heard me go.
Outside the storm had hit, the wind blew with the all rage of hell and the rain pelted my skin like a thousand needles. I sucked in a deep breath and forged on through the jungle.
I had no idea where I was going and in my condition I never even cared, just kept going.
The wind wipped my hair around this way and that, a couple of times it blinded me and I tripped over some root or in a hole. I never felt any of it just kept moving until I finally found the sea.
It roared at me, it's waves calling, beakoning me to come home with them. Stepping into the cool water felt heavanly and I sighed as a wave came charging toward me. All feeling was gone and the wave took me down. I didn't struggle or cry out for it was too late for that, the blackness took over and all was gone...

Nick paused up the stairs, glancing at a few of the doors. There were two long hallways, each of which looked exactly the same. It wasn't helping him at all.
"There's nothing wrong with the animals, I love them dearly. I just feel like sometimes, it's only just a job, you know? I may be on call twenty four hours a day, but that doesn't meant I need to be isolated and locked off. Sometimes it feels like that though. Some vets at the high priced places, they don't even get human contact anymore. It's deplorable."
For some reason, he chose left, and lugged her bags over to one of the doors. It was locked, so he tried another. That was also locked. Down the hall they went, until the far door nearly shoved itself open.
Nick turned on the lights, looking at the place. Fit for a king, or more appropiately a queen. It looked twice as good as a hotel room, and 3 times as cheap.
"I think this'll do just fine, don't you?"

Dr. Rachel Williams

I found I couldn't sleep, no matter how many times I tossed and turned in my bed, my thoughts just wouldn't stop whirling around in my head.
This Theif took something, I wondered if it was altering that person as I lay here and what effects it could have? I was hoping the scare tactics would have brought him or her in, but apparently they were dedicated to their mission. All well.
I climbed out of bed and threw on a thin summer dress, I walk on the beach always managed to calm me down after a horrendous day of work. It should work wonders tonight.
Quietly walking through the halls, I thought of where I would need to double up my security. Those morons, telling me it was fool proof, nothing could get in, not even a mouse. HA!
Fucking liars, after all the money Henry put into this compound this happens. I was irritated but damned eager to meet this theif. This person was good, damned good. Worth hiring if I could bring him or her to my side. Maybe as head of Secuirty. I could afford it, so why not?
Walking along, I kicked off my sandals and rubbed my barefeet into the wet giving sand.
"MMMmm" Sighing heavily, I loved that feeling. The crush of the waves took my attention for a moment as I watched the surf rise and fall, beating away at the island. Relentless, always there until the end.. Kind of like me, still here , still working on a near impossible idea, but not bending nor giving up. I liked successful ventures, this one would just take time.
Stopping along the way I picked up a star fish shell and chucked it out into the water, I didnt like stepping on those things. I still had an imprint on my foot from the last one!
I heard something and turned to watch Reggie come walking down the beach, apparently the girl didn't see me. I called out a hello, but the noise of the beach as always swallowed it up.
"What in the hell is she doing?" I would have thought just walking for the hell of it, but then Reggie went straight into the surf!?
Oh shit, this girl a sleep walker!? I ran down the shore, getting closer to her location, close enough to see her waist deep in the surf.
"Reggie!" I called out, waving my hands, "Wake up!" No responce, not even a glance over her shoulder.
"Dammit! This is all I need, a lawsuit!" I ran out into the water just as her head vanished under the tide. Diving under, I couldn't see a fucking thing this time of night! Where is she? I came up for air and caught a glimpse of her shirt or something. Diving down I grabbed and pulled with all my might.
Reggie's head cleared the water and she began coughing and puking all over the place.
"Damn it girl! You should have warned me! hang on, I'll get you to safety, hang in there K?" I pulled her to the shore, my legs wobbly from the worry and fright of Reggie dying. Panting and heaving her body up to the sand, I plopped down hard on the beach, right next to the face down hacking woman.
"what,..*pant* in gods name were you doing..*pant* out here!?"
I chuckled a little, "You scared ten years off of my life..Next time warn someone you are a sleep walker ok?" I laid back in the sand, just trying to catch my breath.

He entered Jaenelle's room. He saw her lying on her bed, hurriedly putting away a book.

"Well.... here is the music that you wanted to listen to..... do you need anything else?"

He gazed around at her room for a second, then his attention back on her.

(ooc- boy.... i feel lame writting that little.... but that is all I have time for.... school has started and I hate it.... doen't leave me enough time to concentrate on writing. Oh well.... cya folks later)
