I think the old boy would be as pleased as punch by this honour but I wonder what our ex military board members think about an American war ship having a foreigner's name on it..?

How about a sub called USS Monica Lewinsky(sp), it goes down a treat.

They've got to name the ship something, and WC is a better choice than some. I am surprised that the name was available -- why leave this honor for the US to bestow?

pretty sure the brits could use that name too if they haven't already... it would be the HMS Winston Churchill

Hmmm...and why would we be trying to honour Winston Churchill anyway? Did you know that his famous speech "We'll fight them on the beaches etc. etc." was neither written by nor said by him. He had a professional speechwriter (one of the first modern day politicians to do so) and hired a radio actor with a resonant voice to imitate him on the radio. This was a speech calling his country to war and he didn't have the sincerity or faith in his own abilities to say it himself. Geeze.

Not only that, if he hadn't tried to do a deal with the devil (Hitler) in the first place, thousands of Jews may have been saved.

You may want to brush, up on your history, CRaZy. Churchill was among the staunchest opponents of Nazi appeasement in Great Britain and the world. He became Prime Mininister in May, 1940 when Britain was already at war with Germany. There was no more appeasement of Hitler after the Sept. 1, 1939 German invasion of Poland.

It was Neville Chamberlain who attempted to appease Hitler at Munich in 1938.

I can't speak to the truth of your claim concerning that particular speech, but Churchill's vision, courage, and inspirational leadership are almost universally recognized by historians.

English or not, the US would do well to honor him with a ship named after him.

Each entitled to their own opinion. I do know my history. Churchill held out on allowing Jews to come to England. He thought it would be a quick war. He didn't want to inflame Hitler further. Churchill was a media product - an astute politician who did inspire people at the time but, as it turns out, by trickery and manipulation. World War Two documents released fifty years after the event proved the use of an actor to read the speech. They also prove he was in bed with the devil (as was the Pope and thousands of others so it is not just a personal reflection on him). Historians re-evaluate opinions as new evidence about historical events comes to light. He is not so universally revered any more.

Historians certainly do reevaluate history as new evidence comes to light, but is this new evidence enough to prove he was "in bed with the devil"? (what does that mean, anyway? Are you suggesting this evidence suggests he was part of some anti-semitic scheme with Hitler?)

Never has there been a leader in history without his flaws and mistakes. You seem to know World War II history, so I'm sure you know how dangerously close to breaking Great Britain was during the Battle of Britain. Had Britain not withheld the air bombardment of the Luftwaffe, Operation Sea Lion would've proceeded and Hitler would've invaded England, threatening the first European conquest of Britain since William the Conqueror in 1066.

It's extremely easy to criticize leaders in hindsight. Knowing what we do now, that the allies would win the war, it's easy to find fault with allied failures. But one of the greatest mistakes people make in analyzing history is that historical outcomes were inevitable. Allied victory was not a foregone conclusion, especially early in the war. Hundreds of thousands of British were killed. The very freedom of their nation was at stake. They did fought for their very lives, their very freedom. I would've done the same.

Speaking of ballsy Brits…

I have the highest regard for Churchill but I would also like to see a tribute to Margaret Thatcher. She was a staunch British battle-ax with a backbone that the world respected, charm that put Parliament in awe, and wit that kept most of her opponents off-center!

She was a remarkable woman.

what next?

The U.S.S. Mao Tse Tung? The aircraft carrier Menachem Begin?

Fuck that! :) The British navy has got plenty of nice big pretty ship they can name after Churchill and Thatcher.

We've still got plenty of great leaders from our past we can name ships after- we don't need to borrow names from other countries.

The USS Leonard Peltier, now there would be a ship to be proud of.

My favorite real military honorable mention was in Bosnia, I think, where Clinton named a military post after George McGovern. Wonderfully ironic and silly.

Actually, I fully agree with you PC.

I see the sensitivity, discernment and taste levels just took another dip. Way to go, Wicked Kitten.

Just trying to put a little erotic in literotica... Way too much political/military stuff. Although I do LOVE a man in uniform!

Not the first warship named after him. The Royal Navy had a Conqueror class SSN named HMS Churchill.

And not the first navy ship named for a foreigner either. USS Lafayette, USS Kamehameha and USS Comte De Grasse come to mind.

If you want really ironic ship's names, there was a USS Confederacy at one point in time, and a CSS United States...

And the Ticonderoga (CG47), the lead ship of the AEGIS guided missile cruiser. In fact, it is the name of the whole class of the eighteen most sophisticated cruisers in the US fleet.

You know, gumdrop, there are other threads are devoted entirely to -- gasp -- sex, flirtation and fun.

This means that you need not read more serious threads; you can hang out and be fluffy elsewhere.

Your post was offensive in that it trivialized a horrible accident that resulted in several deaths. Clearly, we have different standards of "erotic."

Winston Churchill deserves every honour. The trouble with you Yanks is that you think you rule the world. You do of course but whats that got to do with anything.

Jesus H...

Well, we're fixin' to name a goddamn ship after him, what else do you want us to do?

We could kick Germany's ass again for you, but three times in a century would be a little cliche' don't you think, old boy?

Yeah!!

And we bought Spice Girl Cds too....how much support ya want!

Did I say we? I meant some Americans, not necessarily me. Honest I didn't! Really...swear to God!

"Tell me what ya want what ya really really want..."

Sorry,Sorry. Sorry I was only trying to be facetious.Obviously it didn't go down too well.I have great admiration for the US and if I wasn't English I'd love to be American.
