vasectomy advice / opinions ??

JayUK - Just had it done about 2 mths ago in the US. Don't have health insurance so it only cost about $800. They have you wait 6 weeks before you bring in a sample to see if you are "clear". I wasn't so they want me to go back in a month with another sample. UGH, how I hate condoms.

No difference in performance and no difference in qty. There are different proceedures only if you want to have it reversed. They made one hole (punctured not cut) in the sac and pull the Vas out of the hole, cut it, cauterize it and shove it back in. Then they pull the other vas out and repeat. You are in and out in about 45 min. They gave me some Vicodin (pain killers) but only had to take one. I drove myself home and stopped at the movie store for some rentals. Use plenty of ice and don't over do it. I did have a little discomfort while picking out movies, I thought I was going to pass out. Not sure why as there really wasn't that much pain.

They want you to wait for a week before you have sex, I waited 4 days. I asked a urologist friend and she said if it doesn't hurt go for it.

Not sure how your health care works, but private insurance should cover except for your deductable.

On a funny side...I put together a Partner Vasectomy Commitment Contract before I had it done. Here is the verbage (sorry it is long) with a signature and date line.

This procedure is very painful and can have a life long negative impact on the person having the procedure. By reading and signing this contract you (partner) have agreed to comply with all items listed in this legal binding contract.

1. On the evening before the procedure the partner must provide a 5-minute scrub with antibacterial soap on the affected area.

2. Partner is to provide a “before and after” taste test.

3. Morning of surgery, repeat of 5-minute scrub and towel dry.

4. Partner is to apply ice to affected area after the procedure as indicated by patient.

5. Partner is to assist with removal of sperm with approved means necessary from procedure to check up.

Partner is to assist with collecting the specimen for the 6-week check up and 10-week check up.

- any difference in performance post-op - I was with a man who had this done. Afterwards, he was told to masturbate twice daily to get the sperm out for almost a week. (maybe 5 days) Sounds funny, doesn't it? But he did as he was told. I didn't want to touch or make love because I was afraid I might hurt him. I didn't find any difference in performance afterwards.

- any difference in semen (quantity etc) - I would say it's the same amount, but not as thick, and a MUCH different taste. It's not as strong.

- any recommend procedures to ask for - I would ask for some anxiety medication before the surgery if you're nervous at all. They did this for him, and I'm sure they'd do the same for you.

- discomfort levels ?? - Only slight pain afterwards. He could handle it, but everyone is different.

- have private health -do I just get referred by GP or will I have to pay ?? - I guess it depends on your insurance. His was paid for.

Relax

It is a great procedure if you are certain about it. Sounds like you are. The surgeon wanted me to fill out a release (!) before he'd do it. I said: "I'll make a deal with you. If I have a kid afterwards, I'll pay. But if you mangle my parts or I can't perform anymore I'm coming after you!" He was ok with that and all went smoothly. There was, however, 'slight discomfort' (as the Dr's say) afterwards. Felt more like significant pain to me but then, I'm not a Doc! It passed quickly and the relaxation surrounding sex was well worth it. Fuction seems the same or better.

Nickie - As I said before it has been about 2 mths and I am still not clear. The urologist friend of mine said that "generally" it is about 15 ejaculations. Being I am in a new relationship I told the urologist 60 days times a minimum of 1 time a day i am way over the 15 ejaculations. She said that it was too much info.... I think it varies greatly for each person. Always use a second form of Birth Control in this interim period.

Rusty:

It is quite passable that they cut the wrong string.

When I had my disconnection I was clear in a week! (The wife kept checking the flavor.)

Only problem I had was it looked like my cock was belonging to a man of African descent for about a week - 10 days afterward :)
I was completely black n blue!
Told my wife if she had "black man" fantasies now would be a good time to live them out :)

First ejaculation felt very odd...
my balls twinged a bit and I held my breath...
but ever since I cum just as before :)

I find the actual "amount" the same but not as thick/creamy as before...
then again at 48 nothing is what it once was but overall it was the right thing to do and no regrets.

Max

It is no big deal unless you push yourself too hard or get an infection and your nut or nuts swell up like softballs. But I am hornier than ever before. Had it done 12 years ago too.

Had a vasectomy done by a military surgeon in 1983...I've had no problems, women have had no problems. Well, I lie...the only problem I have now is that I'm getting to be an old fart...dick still works, though :D

I had mine about 8 years ago. Cost me $600, insurance did not pay.

No change in performance, if anything got better because now shooting blanks = freedom

Wife said tastes great !

I had very little swelling, and was clean in 3 weeks.

I was nervous right before the op, and then my DOC brings in his new intern to show HER how to do the procedure, only he made her do it. She was very young, and very pretty, and now had my parts in her hands. For a fleeting moment I though I would get a boner, but when she had a knife in the other hand, not much chance of that. It was a day to be humble.

sure I've seen a thread on this ....... oh well,

Considering stongly having this done (in UK) - welcome any personal experiences.
Particularly:
- any difference in performance post-op
- any difference in semen (quantity etc)
- any recommend procedures to ask for
- discomfort levels ??
- have private health -do I just get referred by GP or will I have to pay ??

thanks in advance Jay
BTw, mid-thirties, 2 x children no more desired by either partner before anyone asks......

I had mine done two years ago now. Quick procedure and no real pain. i haven't and my bride hasn't noticed a decrease in anything you mentioned.

As far as discomfort, there is some, but nothing too bad. Wear tight undies and yo will be fine. I went shopping on the way home for some groceries.

Good luck!

Had it done three years ago......................Ops checks good. No problems whatsoever. Shooting blanks is a good thing. Not that I needed it, but the doc gave me some valium prior to the procedure, and I wouldn't shut up the entire time. Ok, well I did for a second when he cut the left vas def and the local hadn't quite taken yet. Reflexes being what they are, I kicked the guy in the side of the head. We both said sorry and carried on.

Oh yeah..............the above contract is a good thing. I'd print that bad boy up and get your pardner to sign it.

Git 'er Done!!!!!!

P.S. Ms Money Penny appreciated that I went through it.

I have not had the operation but some of my peers at the job who are a bunch of rough and tough guys seem to indicate no problems. Any time any place seems pretty cool to them and their wives who don't want to have kids in their 40's.....As for me I am not at that point, but wanted to put in my two cents.

It has been over 10 weeks for me and still not clean. Doc says come back in another month. His nurse said that it can be 1 year for all of the stray ones to come out.

However a Urologist nurse friend of mine talked to some Doc's that she works with and they said if after 10-15 ejaculations your not clean it has to be done over.... We will wait and see.

Had it done five years ago. No difference in semen quantity, etc. The only difference I found was that I was much hornier! I think it was because I knew my wife and I could have sex and not worry about pregnancies or use any birth control. The doc gave me a prescription for pain killers, but I never did fill it.

The only thing I would do different is I would have brought in a headset and listened to some music or something. Even though I couldn't feel what was happening, the worst part to me was hearing the actual snips. Even though it was something I wanted to do and I'd never want to reverse it, I can still hear those snips five years later. Something about knowing that I just passed the point of no return I guess. Otherwise, it went great. Wife is happy, I am happy.

Had it done some years ago, NO problems afterwards. Had to deliver a sperm sample to microscopy 1 month after as a check. Wife loves it (hates condoms and the pill gives her troubles). I was out playing the Drums in my jazz band next day, i HAD someone help me carry but otherwise it was fine. Go for it :)

Shouldn't Take That Long

I was told that it is possible that the body adjusts to the operation and can in effect, reverse itself. If that happens, it will almost always happen within a year. After the year, I could be pretty sure that I was going to remain sterile. I had it done 18 years ago in my mid-thirties, so I am sure there have been improvements, but the basics are still the same.

The sperm in your system past the cut should be long gone in 10 weeks unless you’re not ejaculating. If you had a test recently and sperm was found, I’d suspect that it wasn’t done correctly or something went wrong. I wanted to make sure, so even though I was cleared in about a month, I went back at 6 months, 1 year and about 2 ½ years, just to be sure. We didn’t want ANY surprises!

Jayuk - There was minimal discomfort for a few days, and I milked it for sympathy as much as I could get away with. That more than made up for the discomfort. The only thing missing from the semen is the sperm. I, nor my wife, remember any noticeable difference is semen production.

Sex was much better afterwards because of the lack of pregnancy fear. That and the increased spontaneity, also made me hornier. My wife also enjoyed it more. My feeling is that this resulted in better performance on my part. If I am just fooling myself concerning my performance, then my wife being able to enjoy it more, gave her the illusion that I was a better lover. Either way, it worked out better for us.

It took us about 3 years of discussion to make sure that we wanted to go through with it. I worked with a person that had it done after he was divorced. About 5 years later, he got remarried and he changed his mind. Fortunately for them, he was able to get it reversed and she got pregnant. I would just make sure that you’re Absolutely, 100% sure that you don’t want kids. If so, I would strongly recommend the procedure. I just don’t see a downside to it.

I did the vas after divorce then the reversal then got another vas.
Might as well have a zipper on my bag.
