Coach Logan Reardon
It was only the second week of practice and the coach of the Rutherford High School girls volleyball team was not happy. His best returning player had managed to break her arm playing badminton during the summer. Seriously, he thought to himself, who breaks their arm playing badminton. Logan glanced over his shoulder at Mandy Patterson as she sat on the bottom level of the bleachers, her right arm in a sling. Noticing that he was looking her way, Mandy smiled brightly at him. He returned the smile halfheartedly before turning his attention back to the court where the rest of the team was scrimmaging.
He felt bad for the girl, but not as bad as he felt for the team. Logan sighed. It wasn't as if Mandy's injury was the only problem he had though. Turn out at the tryouts had been, well, anemic. They'd only managed to find three new members, leaving the team dangerously thin. And to top it all off, money for less popular sports like volleyball was in short supply. Principal Jenkins had made it clear to Logan that if he couldn't manage a decent showing this year, the volleyball program was in jeopardy.
As the coach watched one of his front line players slap another shot into the net, he heard one of the gymnasium doors open to his left. He turned to see one of his senior players entering the gym. Savannah was twenty minutes late, and it was the third time in just two weeks that she'd been late for practice. Logan understood that the kids had a lot going on, with classes and homework, family commitments, part time jobs, etc volleyball was often low on the priority list. But, when he'd asked Savannah why she'd been late earlier in the week, the brunette had basically blown him off. This time, he needed to show her that it wasn't acceptable for her to keep this behavior up.
"Savannah," he barked, motioning for her to join him by the bleachers.
