Back in college I was an intern for a large midwestern newspaper. We were doing an investigative story on a series of murders when we began receiving phone calls that we were "barking up the wrong tree" and that we "were going to get sued for libel" because we were picking on an "innocent man."

The caller came in on our WATS line (this was long before caller ID) and would never identify himself, he would only say that he was a "friend" of the newspaper and a "friend" of the suspect.

Eventually the suspect went missing, the police couldn't find him. When we received our phone bill, I checked the phone records and matched the times I spoke on the phone with the caller, and discovered that the call origin had changed to a small town in Illinois. I then called number on the phone bill and it was for a pay phone outside a boarding house where, the old man I was speaking with, told me that a room had been newly rented in the last week. (That was the talk of the town, a room that had been un-rented for years was suddenly taken.) I spoke with my bureau chief, we called the police and he was picked up 24 hours later.

Although he wasn't charged with the murders we investigated, within a few years he was charged with other murders and is currently in jail.
