The Prime Meridian - Zero Degrees Longitude - runs through London. By that definition, Germany, Italy, Scandinavia and most of France are in The East, although nobody would ever refer to them as being part of the Orient, even if that had not, for some reason, become not PC.

Last time I checked a globe, Earth was round. If we draw a line around the middle ('Equator') we can distinguish North vs South. But East vs West is rather more arbitrary. Where do we draw that dividing line? Hint: it's pretty jagged and disconnected.

*I* will say so. In common usage, "The West" means industrialized first-world Eurocentric nations. Israel is of The West; states lying west of Israel in Africa are not, and neither is Russia, which is also west of Israel. USA and Canada are of The West; most of Latin America is not.

A similar term is Global North, which doesn't mean north of the Equator, but rather The West without necessarily being Eurocentric. Add-in Russia, Japan, S.Korea -- these are of the Global North. And so are Oz and NZ. China and Brazil seem headed that way.

IMHO 'First-World' and 'The West' and 'Global North' all relate to prosperity vs poverty levels. Parts of Mexico, China, Brazil, India etc are 1st world; most parts are 3rd world. None are 'western'. All aspire to join the Global North.

If the Progressives can overcome the gerrymandering enough to split the House and control the Senate we will have a grip on the throat of the beast. If in 2018 we can increase our hold on the house and take control of both houses, we can send Hillary off on a long vacation to mend our relationships in Africa or Australia.

I guess Bernie believes that this is the best way since the Primary was rigged for Princess Hilary. Building the Progressive Revolution from the ground up is a better long term solution anyway.
