What Are You Listening to Now 7.0

Three versions (of Tainted love)

And no Marilyn Manson in sight. Bravo! :)

I'm still on a huge "barbarian metal" kick. Therefore, once again:

Manowar - Into Glory Ride, Track 2: Secret Of Steel

Also, thanks to a deep dive into female metal vocalists, I have Kamelot stuck in my head again. Now you can too!

Can I just say that I LOVE the outfit Eliza Ryd (the one in white) is wearing? I don't see much, but I think that's by design here. Ha, blind puns!

Yeah, there were a couple more versions I considered including, and neither of them was that one. I don't mind it musically, but MM is not a person I like to give clicks to, and the "darkness" of that version feels very superficial up against the Coil version. Especially knowing the context of the Coil version.

No clue about MM the person, but I never understood why he got so big - apart from Americans freaking out about his Alice Cooper but with sex schtick. One would think by then they'd seen it all. Speaking musically, he wasn't that revolutionary to begin with. Killing Joke and NIN did the electro-with-guitars thing earlier and better. :)

I think that's a large part of the answer, though the distinction between him and Cooper goes beyond the sex angle.

Strictly speaking, Alice Cooper is "Christian rock". He's a born-again Christian, singing songs about how Satan tempts people to ruin, which is a pretty popular theme in US evangelicism. (His father was an evangelical preacher).

His music is unusual in that genre because he sings about Satan/stage-persona-Alice in the first person, with a sense of humour, and because he's a good enough musician that he doesn't need to lean on the religious angle to sell his albums. Look past the packaging, though, and his songs don't really challenge that US-Evangelical world view, other than making the Devil a bit too sexy and cool. (Speaking in generalisations here; the man has had a long career and not everything he's written falls into the description above.)

Manson, OTOH, presents himself as anti-Christian. Although he plays with Biblical terminology, my understanding is that he rejects the Bible and the existence of a Christian version of God. I know that's caused some friction between him and Cooper in the past.

Evangelical Christianity is a powerful force in US politics, which leaves a lot of people wanting to rebel against it. For that purpose, Manson is a much better fit than a born-again evangelical Republican... at least for people who haven't moved past "rebelling against" to look at what they're rebelling for.

As for MM the person, this article covers it pretty well. A lot of people in the goth scene are sweethearts cosplaying as monsters; Manson used that trope as cover for actually being a rapey abusive violent piece of shit.

Motown. I found a stack of old vinyl singles that someone who was moving left out in case someone else wanted them, including of some great songs. I still have my turntable, so I played several (after a much-needed Discwash), and now that's all I've been listening to for the last couple days. One example:

I will burn in Hell for the headline introducing this clip, but let's consider the nature of the forum we're on. Here goes...

Oh Mamma !
That first part where she hit to Go pedal and that English Diapason Chorus burst out; and on a 5-manual machine, too !

Love it. Got any more ?

But it's late; I need a brew of Tea

Here are a couple, though only the first one is on the Royal Albert instrument.

Ms. Lapwood is a joy to listen to and to watch in action. Make sure you pay attention to the second clip @3:20 as she "rolls up her sleeves" to take on the fugue. Adorable. Gawd... the first clip has her personality (and musicianship!) all over it. I'm smitten with this young woman. I fantasize about being 40 years younger, living in England and not being married, and doing everything I could to meet her. An amazing talent!

One of my favorite Death Metal bands graced us with new music
Hypocrisy - They Will Arrive

I love all the little details woven into this sledgehammer of a song, from the Celtic Frost like "Ugh" to the guitars almost sounding like the UFOs from Close Encounters Of The Third Kind to the fantastic harmonies and melodies sprinkled in throughout. Harsh vocal warning is in effect, but if you're willing to give listening to death growls a try today, why not with this song?

Boring beat, weak flow and not really sexy.

I'm not exactly bleeding edge when it comes to hip hop - I think the late '80s/early '90s were the golden years - but I'm utterly sick and tired of the "look how tough/rich/dangerous I am" brag lyrics. Good rappers have you by the balls with their cadence and intonation as much as with the words they say. Compared to Chuck D, ice-T, Chali 2na, Lil Kim or even frickin Nicki Minaj this Latto person sounds limp.

My two grams of bling, y'all...
