What Are You Listening to Now 7.0

I'm astonished that this has stayed below my radar for five years, but hey! Leave me alone...

Ever get a song stuck in your head that's played a part in inspiring you while writing? Yep, that's pretty much this one for me, so much I used it for the title of the work... Feather and a Knife. It just kinda pops up in my head now at the most random times, I swear I've woken up with it playing in my brain a few times!

Ever listen to Donovan's song "Hurdy Gurdy Man" and wonder "What or Who is Hurdy Gurdy?"

Because that happened to me about a year ago, and then I googled it and discovered that a Hurdy Gurdy is a rube-goldberg like invention of the medieval era. An insanely complex instrument that is equally complicated to play.

And there are some musicians that still make music with it. It has a very distinct sound, and everytime I hear it now I feel like I am in the middle of a fantasy novel:

Forget the "lute" that so many fantasy writers reach for as the instrument of choice. This one does it for me.

Indigo Girls

Rites of Passage, which includes an unnecessary but totally credible Dire Straits cover:

I've linked at least one of their songs before. But IMHO, these are their crazy-good best. I once tried to learn the guitar part for "Power of Two" so I could sing it to my lovely wife in a bygone year, but Emily is a much better guitar player than me.

Their biggest "hit", which was not nearly as big as it should've been. Check them out live on Letterman. But then there were so many others (see above):

I've linked to them before and will happily do so again. Here's a Neil Young non-cover:

Here's Neil's original that inspired it:

Their Tiny Desk Concert (maybe they've had more than one):

The faint hum of the refrigerator, and not much more. It's still early.

I think I'll listen to some blues later today.
