What Are You Listening to Now 7.0

I just heard "Secret Agent Man" and had a lovely memory from my childhood once I moved into my foster home. It was my first week there, and the song was playing on Father's computer. I listened with him while he was sitting there, thinking about what he was writing. Once I got the song, I sang the chorus Secret Asian Man, and he began laughing and said, "It's Agent, not Asian, but I often hear Asian myself."

Sorcerer - everything.

I'm about to run a D&D session and Sorcerer are the perfect mix of epic, melodic and powerful. Therefore I've cued up their entire discography on Alexa to delight my players. For fans of Rainbow, Dio, Black Sabbath and Candlemass.

Alice Cooper - Road

Well, seems like the "old guard" is on a roll lately. Not a huge fan of the latest Ozzy album (the sound is ...weird), but with Ann Wilson (Fierce Bliss), Billy Idol, Blue Öyster Cult, Kansas and now Uncle Alice putting out such bangers, I'm in not much of a hurry to find new, young bands.

Anyway, Alice still sounds very good for his age (75!!) and he's gone back to the late '70s, heavily citing his own back catalogue. I don't need constant innovation in a musician's sound and Alice had his fair share of busts in that regards, so him concentrating on what he's really, really good it is a smart move.

80s and 90s mostly-forgotten Brit synthpop. How does that happen?

(thanks Phil Collins for the backing vox)

Edit: Back to Howard Jones ... you know this is a really fine representation of his work(?):

Yes, he covered Steely Dan's (okay, Donald Fagen's) awkwardly titled I.G.Y.:

The original, which honestly didn't need a cover:

Straying off-track, I probably need to do one for Hall & Oates.

Yes, them.

Yes.

Charlie Robison, RIP

He and Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks let each other have it in a not romantic/romantic romance that could not be a better story (could it?):

He also (memorably IMO) covered Johnny Cash:

Those of you who have no connection to Texas or Texas music are welcome to not comment.

Not that anyone cares, but here's a Leon Russell song made popular by Willie Nelson, that Ray Charles kills. And both Leon and Willie knew it.

One more from Charlie Robison, even more poignant now that he's gone:

I've been listening to Radio Paradise again. I go back more often these days. Jeez they're good. Some finds:

Angelique Kidjo covers Jimi Hendrix, uniquely and compellingly IMO. Give it a minute to grow on you if it doesn't immediately:

Angelique Kidjo covers Jimi Hendrix live, this time with Buddy Guy vying with her usual guitarist for Jimi's shade. Spoiler: they're both good. ( But Buddy's better :)~ ) Still not Jimi, but no one is:
