I just started Master and Commander by Patrick O’Brian but I'm not sure it is my cup of tea. Has anyone read it?

Yes. I enjoyed it a lot and have started another O'Brian book. I was surprised at how literary it was. The quality of the writing is excellent. It does a great job of capturing what it would be like to serve on a fighting ship in that time.

The Peter Weir film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, is, IMO, an excellent and highly underrated film, although the story is based on an amalgam of O'Brian's novels rather than on the novel of the same name that you are reading.
