What have you/did you collect?

Hi again, I also have every Ninja Turtle & Lego set that I bought for my son. He & his friends had all the Legos out the summer before he died while I was away for a few days. They filled the living room with a massive Lego city. I don't know what I will do with all of them, but I couldn't let them go, so packed them away. LAVAGODDESS, if you would like to email me, I can give you the names of several good web sites & several doll artists that do custom work. You can also type Barbie into almost any search engine & come up with 100's of web sites devoted to all aspects fo Barbie collecting. One of my favorite dolls is an Angel that a bunch of my internet friends had made for me after I lost my son, she is a one of a kind & priceless to me.

This will probably get me flamed, but the main reason that girls have a poor self image is their mothers. Virtually every female I know has played with Barbie at some point in time & none of us have self-image problems. Working retail, I can't tell you how many moms have come into my store wanting high heels, makeup, padded bras, etc for their daughters, some are as young as 9. I have lost count of the times I have heard a mom tell her daughter, "You have such a pretty face, if you'd only lose weight, makeup will make you so much prettier, why do wear the clothes you do & so on." One of my niece's friends is 8 & her mother has her in contacts because girls who wear glasses aren't pretty. My sister is constantly being given shit by the other mom's in dance class because my niece wears the minimum of makeup needed when she is dancing. My niece has told me that she has friends who are on diets, these girls are in the 3rd & 4th grade, for God's sake. Little girls don't have a problem with Barbie, it is adult women who have bought into the advertising propaganda about what is attractive & what isn't. Blaming Barbie is a cop-out from parents who can't or won't accept what their daughters look like if the girls don't fit the Madison Avenue mold. Parents are supposed to be their children's role models, what happened to that? Most studies that I have seen show that it is middle school when girls really lose the sense of self esteem they had when they were in grade school. I know very few middle schoolers who still play with dolls, the ones that do are budding doll artists & are developing their talents.

Add me to the list of Barbie collectors.

And Magic doesn't work for me either.

I collected LEGO blocks like forever as a kid. Lost the whole lot in a move during college. That really sucked. Now that I have kids of my own, I get to collect them again, although technically they are my son's, not mine. :)

We have legos too.

They belong to the kids now. We have a 20 gallon tub filled to the brim of just the little block, plus several containers holding people, car parts, and other accsesories.

My honey bought me the space set for my birthday before we had kids. The train still runs and my boys love it.

Eve, I also collect Barbies & assorted Barbie stuff. I have over 500 & keep getting more.I have several that were custom made for me. I am learning to re-do them, painting faces & changing their hair. Several of my friends make amazing amounts of money selling their custom dolls. Everyone laughs when they hear about my hobby, but everyone sure likes to look at them. I have one on my desk at work & everytime I go to work after a few days off, she is in a different place. She is either moving around or someone is playing with her.

Are there any websites you could recommend to me if I want to get involved in custom made barbies. That sounds like fun. I have hundreds of them and not just the collectible kind. Some have been taken out of the boxes but I have always wanted to learn how to fix their hair and make outfits for them.

Wow!! I am awed by the things that people collect.... Now I know I am not a freak!!

I too collected rocks (I still do... blush blush)
And I have a lot of those bean bag animals.... what are those called??? (LOL) What in the hell was I thinking?

I've gotten sucked into these cool little 1/18 scale automobiles. This is as close as I'm going to get to car collecting. I wish I could find a Pontiac from the fifties.

My husband collects those too. We have about six or seven dozen of them in his office. I'll ask him if he's seen any 50's Pontiacs.
