AFAICT, a lot of those kind of "rules" were invented by tedious Victorian-ish dudes with too much time on their hands, often as a kind of shibboleth to mark out the posh classes from the plebs. I suspect they're the same people who insisted on inventing all sorts of obscure collective nouns for different kinds of animals, something that serves no discernible purpose.

What made me smile today: dudes who need to have Manly Versions of things, which are exactly like the regular thing but in black or labelled with MAXIMUM TURBO POWER RHINO AS USED BY THE S.A.S., so that they don't get feminised by their biro/deodorant/car/whatever.

The mushroom season is officially open! First mushrooms picked this year. I spotted a few handfuls of morels when I went for a walk to check out the flower situation in the park/forest nearby.

The morels are actually a really good find, doesn't happen every. Or rather, I find them every year but usually in spots where I can't pick them because they're in someone's garden or too close to a road or something. It's annoying to see them and not be able to eat them.

False morels are a more common find for me, but they're lethally poisonous and the process of unlethalizing them is not something I feel like doing too often because it involves boiling them outdoors to stop the toxic gas from killing you. It's just a lot of work. Nice to do once in a while, because the mushrooms are tasty, but not a weekly treat.

The morels that I found now were tasty and didn't need any special preparation, so a total winner.

We have giant puffballs but they aren’t common. We have smaller versions that are common but they go bad in a heartbeat, so you have to find them at the right time. Chanterelles are very common here. There are so many excellent mushrooms. Next I’ll start keeping my eyes open for the sheated woodtufts. If you don’t know what you’re doing they’re difficult to tell apart from deadly skullcaps (fun name!) that are, as the name suggests, deadly. It’s interesting that our ideas about what is edible have changed. The amethyst deciever was pointed out to kids here, because it’s easy to recognize when young and well, amethyst. Now it’s considered a danger, because it will absorb arsenic from the soil.

I’m still smiling from the roadtrip. Good company, good food, walking barefoot in the water, curvy roads and an old school metal playlist.

I’ve decided to throw my own birthday party. I do not want or need a birthday party. Unfortunately, I keep telling people I don’t want these things so they take it as an invitation to do it for me. That’s sweet. But it’s wrong. Ultimately, I have a good time and people are happy but it isn’t my style or interests. This year, I’m planning my own to avoid the “surprise” and actually have a party full of my favorite things. I’m also not going to negotiate timing. I’m sending invites and you either come or you don’t.

I’m not going to be passive about it this year.
