Inspired by a joke made in the super-official Halloween Contest Thread, I decided to take a look at what genres tend to win contests at Lit. I recorded the genres of all the stories that have won or placed for all six of Lit's official contests over the past five years (2020-2025) and tallied up the data to see which ones were the most well-represented.
Disclaimer: this isn't actually a serious attempt at data analysis as the factors I'm looking for are limited to genres with no regard for any other sort of qualitative property. My dataset is also incomplete, as the first and third place winners in the 2020 Winter Holidays contest have had their stories pulled down and I was unable to find an archived version of the page. With all that said, this is for fun so here's the very unscientific pivot table I came up with:

Key takeaways here:
Obviously take all this with a grain of salt and write what you want to write for the upcoming contests next year; I just thought it would be a fun little exercise to see how they've trended over the past half decade.

Key takeaways here:
- Romance is far and away the most popular genre across the board, with 33% of the 102 stories I recorded. It's also the only genre that has placed in each of the six contests.
- I guess if you want to have the best shot at winning (especially in the April Fool's and Winter Holidays contests), write in Romance!
- After Romance, Lesbian Sex is the next most popular, with E&V and Mature next up. (Lesbian Sex and Mature each place in 5 of 6 contests; naturally E&V has its best showing in Nude Day contests)
- Past the top four, every other genre shares a very small piece of the pie.
- "Mainstream" genres that are not represented include: Anal, Fan Fiction, Humor & Satire, Interracial Love, Letters & Transcripts, Loving Wives, Mind Control, Non-Erotic, Novels and Novellas, Toys & Masturbation, Transgender/Crossdressing (put together because they were only split this year).
- Despite the joke I referenced earlier, no Taboo/Incest story has won the Halloween contest in the past five years (possibly more). Sounds like an opportunity?

Obviously take all this with a grain of salt and write what you want to write for the upcoming contests next year; I just thought it would be a fun little exercise to see how they've trended over the past half decade.
