Why didn't I kill you?

Jack closed his eyes for a moment, the water from the rain slightly bothered him but he didn’t allow it to distract him.

It had been 5 years, 5 long years since the death of his wife at the hands of that evil creature. 5 years and he still hardly knew a thing about it. His mind went back to the night he came home to find his dead wife and the red-eyed creature looking at him mockingly and leaving.

He hadn’t spend the years idly, a whole world unknown from the public was now bare to his eyes, he learned things he once thought were dumb fantasies, ghosts, demons, werewolves and worst of all the dreadful vampires.

He went over what he knew, the red-eyed creature was a vampire, a powerful old vampire, and responsible for far more deaths than just Elizabeth’s, and that it hid under a silver mask and the mock name Marquis, yet after all this time he knew nothing! Not even if the creature was male or female.

However after slaughtering hundreds of supernatural creatures sometimes some leads of the location were uncovered, just now it made it’s lair at the top of an old abandoned mansion.

He hurried up, he had no time to lose, it was the first time he had been so close… and then he heard it, the noise that made everything worthless, the glass of the top window being shattered.

He still ran, but all he could see was a dark figure hovering down from an impossible height, then when it reached the ground it turned to look up at him, just enough so that he could see its eyes, and imagine its mocking smile.

Jack punched out the remains of the window hurting his hand, it was then that he heard something behind him and turned around.

How had this happened to her? She was never ever going on another blind date again. Strike that, she was never going to trust a man again. The side of her neck hurt like hell. It felt like someone had stuck pitch forks into it. Her best friend Terry (who was so not her best friend anymore) had set her up on date. Little did she know that her so called best friend had been a vampire and her vampire husband or mate or whatever you'd call it wanted a new...playmate to play with.

So her 'best friend' had set her up with her 'friend' who hadn't been on a date in ages. Ages? HA! Yeah fucking right. Ages was an understatement. The next thing she knew she'd been led to a house where he all but ate her skin off sucking her blood and turning into a vampire! If someone had told Angela that she was going to have a blind date with a vampire a week ago. She would've laughed. She didn't even think things like that existed except for on shows like Vampire Diaries.

Now, she hid behind a tree. Her neck hurt and she felt cold. No, literally she was cold. If someone human were to touch her, they'd know she was a vampire because she didn't have any body warmth anymore. If she knew where the fucker who did this to her lived. She'd kill them herself. Unfortunately, she didn't. So it stood, Angela was alone in a house with no one to keep her safe or really explain what was going on with her.

She didn't know what to do as a vampire. Would she turn into a monster and just bite anyone that came near her? Angela jumped at the sound of someone breaking a window and squealed. Oh god, the guy who did this to her had come back and decided he didn't want her as a playmate didn't he? He wanted to finish her off.

"I'm gonna die now, aren't I?" She whimpered to herself trying to crouch behind the bed where she was hiding.

He followed the faint noises, then they stopped. He looked to his hand and realized that he was now bleeding, he decided to leave it untreated for now, if any vampires were in the house they would have problems holding back and would act stupid.

The stake was on his hand... he had been ready to use it... he should have arrived earlier, go up the steps faster, something.

He eventually entered the room with where the noise came from, after looking around he found a girl cowering behind a bed, a strange feeling took over him, he had found vampire victims before the protocol was always the same, check the neck if you see marks stake them, but something held him back with this girl. Rather than the usual he just asked.

"Are you alright?" this was wrong for a million reasons, she could be the Marquis' ally, girlfriend, slave or whatever, and here he was talking instead of killing her.

"What happened to you?" in his head he had thousands of voices screaming at him to kill her, to check the neck and be done, and yet he couldn't bring himself to do it.

Maria shook with fear as she heard steps coming closer and closer towards her. She huddled against the wall when the man came closer to her. For some odd reason, she got this real strong hunger...for something. She wasn't sure what it was. Okay, she kind of knew what it was.

If she was a vampire that meant she hungered for...blood now, right? Oh god! "STAY AWAY!" She screamed bolting up and jumping on the bed and trying to stay away from him. Maria could feel her fangs slowly elongating.

"Please, I-I don't know whats happening to me but whatever it is, I -I - I don't want to hurt you, so please stay away."

She did something very unusual, if given time to move usually new vampires would jump on the closest human to their first fix, however she was jumping away, she couldn't keep her fangs from growing but she was managing to stay away from him.

His gaze went down for a second, his wound was still dripping... her willpower must be amazing for her to be unable to attack him... or maybe she is just that fucking scared.

He should kill her, everything he had trained himself to embody in this years told him to kill her, that it would release her from the prison of being a vampire, that it would help all the people that she was going to hurt.

Still all he saw was a frightened young beautiful woman, he looked at her body for a second, concluding that she was indeed quite sexy, he wondered if he wasn't killing her because he was lonely... however everytime he thought of killing her, his body wouldn't respond.

Then a thought came up with a reason to not kill her, one that he had to listen to, at least briefly.

"I know what is happening to you, you won't be able to hurt me, don't worry about me."

He took a step forward and extended his healthy hand to her, a way of offering peace he thought.

"My name is Jack, the vampire that attacked you goes by the nickname of Marquis. That monster killed my wife five years ago." his thumb touched the ring he was still wearing as he said this "I have been trying to rid the world of it ever since"

He took another step towards her, his eyes on hers "Is there anything you can tell me about it? after all this time it continues to elude me, any way to contact, any way of catching it?"

Then he realized he was focusing about his problem, she was probably scared, and hungry, and was going to be forced of coming to grips with being a vampire, maybe before she could say anything useful.

"I'm sorry about what happened to you, I wish I could have gotten here earlier then you wouldn't be in this situation."

"I know what is happening to you, you won't be able to hurt me, don't worry about me."

Maria hadn't noticed the wound on his hand or at least, she didn't think she had. She could smell the blood yeah, but she didn't realize that the wound was causing this...weird reaction. She slowly looked up at the man who called himself Jack.

"You do?" She asked, quietly.

"My name is Jack, the vampire that attacked you goes by the nickname of Marquis. That monster killed my wife five years ago." his thumb touched the ring he was still wearing as he said this "I have been trying to rid the world of it ever since"

Marquis? She didn't recognize that name but then again, if she remembered correctly which she was certain that she didn't. Terry had called her boyfriend, or husband, or mate or whatever by Mark.

"And whats this got to do with me?"

"Is there anything you can tell me about it? after all this time it continues to elude me, any way to contact, any way of catching it?"

Ah, so he was fishing for information. Well, if she knew where this mark guy was located she'd kill him herself. However, she didn't. She shook her head, "No, sorry I can't help you." Her body stayed pressed against the wall.

"I'm sorry about what happened to you, I wish I could have gotten here earlier then you wouldn't be in this situation."

"You and I both.." she muttered, then slowly shakily stood up and crawled on the bed to stay away from him. Whatever it was about him, she wanted to stay far back because the reaction she had was not a good one. She at least knew that much.

"Sorry, I wish I could help you but I don't know anything."

He moved closer to her again, while voices in his mind told him to stop acting so foolishly, reminding him that she was a vampire and should be eliminated. Yet he kept moving closer to her as she moved back.

"If the vampire that turned you is staked, your vampirism would be healed" why was he sharing that information? he wasn't going to let her live to pursue the other vampire was he?

"Are you sure that there is no information that would help me locate him?"

He reached out and touched her leg, her skin was cold, but it was also firm and young... he pushed those thoughts out of his head.

"I want to help you.... I'm sorry I don't know your name" why was he asking for her name? he should have staked her already, luckily she seemed to be dealing with her own struggles enough to not notice the ones he had.

Maria was hardly listening to him. All she knew was that she was starving, most likely for blood. He was human and she was trying so hard not to be a killer. Plus, how could she trust someone who she'd just met a few minutes ago. If he could kill other vampires, wouldn't he kill her? He could get information from her and then kill her. Wasn't happening!

Maria had enough to think about. Her fangs started elongating again and she pulled away. "No, I don't know anything. Really, all I know is that I woke up here, with fangs and a bite mark on my neck. Don't know the guy you're talking about and don't know where he is."

She stood and took a deep breath, "I have to go..." silently adding to herself to find Terry. However as soon as she stood up from lack of blood, she collapsed to the ground.

When she said she was going to go, he knew that he couldn't let her leave, maybe he had hesitated but she couldn't let a vampire run free, yet before he could muster the resolve to kill her, she collapsed on the ground.

He had never seen that happen, then again he had never seen a new vampire go without blood for so long.

He grabbed her and tried to wake her, she was completely out, she was helpless, again he wondered why he wasn't staking her, and why his mind was filled with thoughts of being on top of her like this but without their clothes in the way.

He shook his head, and pushed the decision to kill her to the back of his mind, she hadn't killed anyone, and if he kept her supervised she wouldn't, besides it was unusual that Marquis would turn her and leave her, usually all that was left behind were corpses, and that was a reason to keep her.

He put her in his car and took her to his place, as he laid her on the bed he pondered what to do.

Eventually he restrained her hands, tying the wrists together in front of her. He wasn't sure how much self control she would have once she tasted blood and he wanted to be in as much control as possible, without freaking her out by restraining her completely.

He deepened the cut on his hand, and opened her mouth, allowing the blood to drip, slowly feeding her.

Maria could feel movement, even though she had passed out from lack of blood. She was being moved. This much she knew, but by whom she wasn't quite sure. Could Terry and her lover come to get her? It couldn't have been that weird guy. No, why would he move her?

She groaned as she felt the tightness around her wrists. Her eyes fluttered open at the metallic taste of blood; it was sweet yet not so sweet. What an odd taste. Despite her humanly thoughts, her body which was now vampire struggled against the bonds for more blood, jerking as she sucked hungrily at her wrists.

Slowly, her eyes which used to be brown but were now red with blood lust looked up at the man who was feeding her. Who she saw was someone she hadn't expected. She had thought she'd see Terry's amused look while Terry's lover was feeding her.

No, this was the same man that had threatened to kill her best friends lover yet promised to give her mortality back. She pulled her head back gasping. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" She screeched, "Do you want me to kill you?" The answer was quite obvious since he'd tied her up but still...what idiot would let a vampire feed off of him.

"No, I don't want you to kill me, nor I want you to kill anyone else. I have never seen a vampire pass out from lack of blood, I suppose it's not pleasant."

His hand kept her down in case she went out of control.

"I think that you can help me... that we can help each other actually." At least that is what he was telling himself.

He looked into her eyes "That is if you want help, if you want to remain a vampire there is nothing I can do for you"

Her hazy red vision began to slowly clear up and she glared at him. She would not put her best friend in danger. Vampire or not. She could survive as a vampire, couldn't she? Besides, since when could humans turn back into a human after being turned immortal. That made absolutely no sense.

Maria smiled sweetly at the guy. "Listen, Jake or whatever your name is. I thank you for being so..sweet to me despite the fact that you only met me like, what? 20 minutes or so ago. Thats nice, but I could be a killer. What am I talking about? I am a killer. I'm a vampire now. It's something I have to come to terms with."

She continued on with her rant despite the fact that she should probably stop. "I mean, if you're a slayer shouldn't you like kill me or something? Isn't that what slayers do?"

One would think she would stop talking but she continued. It was probably because she was still slightly hysterical about being part of the undead or maybe it was because she was trying to avoid telling him anything.

"What kind of slayer are you?"

He wasn't sure, if she was being serious, if she was hiding something, or if she was just a wreck of nerves. I chose not to listen to her now, otherwise she would be right and I had to kill her.

"Not sure what kinds of slayers there are, I don't have powers like a tv character or a half vampire if that is what you are asking."

He looked into her eyes again "You are not a killer... yet at least, I won't let you become one, and I will kill you if necessary. Do you want to be a killer? Say it and I will kill you now, guess it will at least stop your hunger."

Maria opened her mouth and then shut it. No, she didn't want to be a killer but she didn't want to get killed and she wasn't exactly what one would call a killer either. She frowned and shook her head. Finally, she rolled her eyes and then looked at him.

"If I wanted to be a killer, I could have had my chance before, when I first saw you."

Her eyes kept glancing down at his wound, catching sight of the slash in his arm. She still didn't understand him though and she still didn't trust him. After all, if he didn't want to kill her why were her hands still tied?

"And I didn't mean the question literally. I was just saying..gah! Nevermind." Maria growled angrily, "Can you let me go please? I promise I won't kill you. I didn't even like your blood. It tasted disgusting. I almost threw up." Maria lied, though she knew that she'd had enough blood to at least keep her from mauling anyone down for...at least a day.

He untied the ropes at her request,

"You are right, you didn't attack me when you first saw me, and I was even dripping blood then, I know you are not a wanton killer... however you are still a vampire, I'm afraid I can't let you loose."

He bit his lip, in a way it was like a kidnapping. He didn't want it this way, but it was the only way he could live with himself while not having killed her.

With more resolve he added coldly "You will have to remain here."

Maria rubbed her wrists as he talked. She felt rather proud of herself that she hadn't mauled him down earlier despite his wound. She stood up to leave assuming he would let her free, totally and completely. However, his words kept her still.

Her eyes widened as she looked at him.

"Are you...joking me?!" This was totally considered as kidnapping, "You're kidnapping me? Well, technically I'm not a kid, but still. Vampire napping me? Really?!" She screeched.

She made a quick glance towards the door, then back at Jake. "Fine whatever you say Jake..." She said, feigning a shrug, then quickly without waiting for a moment to pass by she ran quickly to the door. "But you'll have to catch me first."

Well, she found one good benefit to being a vampire. Super speed. That was always a benefit and if he was a slayer with no powers that must mean he could only run at human speed.

She ran down the steps and headed for the door.

She was in shock which was understandable, he wasn't ready however for her attempt to escape though.

This is the kind of thing that is bound to happen if you leave vampires alive... she was much faster than him, but he knew the area, maybe he was just a human but he was a well trained human.

After all most vampires were stronger, and faster than him, still he managed to kill them. Kill them... not capture them, a voice in his mind reminded him.

He opened the window looked out and jumped through it, it wasn't really tall after all. Landing a few feet in front of the fleeing vampire, luckily she was running on that direction, he quickly dashed to her and grabbing her by the shoulders pushed her into the wall.

"I can't let you leave, I should have killed you, if I don't, I have to be sure you don't hurt anyone or I'll be responsible for it"

Unwillingly, or more like unconciously his body was pressing against her, it hadn't been sexual, nor he planned to take advantage of her, but as he noticed it his heart started to beat faster, and he while still holding her took a step backwards.

Maria thought she had made it out, she was only a couple of feet away from the door when suddenly, Jake jumped in front of her. She growled at him but was quickly pushed against a nearby wall, her head banged against it and her growl became even louder. This guy was absolutely, fucking crazy! He was vampire napping her and expected her to just go along with it?!

Any other time, this position might have had Maria slightly aroused. However, this position was what it was and she not. Instead, she felt a huge fury and she couldn’t possibly contain it. At least, she didn’t think she could.

"I can't let you leave, I should have killed you, if I don't, I have to be sure you don't hurt anyone or I'll be responsible for it"

Part of her wanted to say something smart ass like, you probably should have
killed me. However, she was not a stupid girl. She didn’t want to be killed and she had to keep reminding herself of that. This didn’t stop her from being sarcastic though.

“Oh, okay. So I guess you’re going to feed and water me like you’re very own personal pet then, huh?” Maria retorted, her voice dripped with sarcasm.

For a second, he wanted to say yes, as fleeting thoughts of keeping her chained in his bedroom rushed through his mind, he did quickly push that away though.

"No, I want you to help me, and help you in turn, you don't want to be a killer, the best way to prevent that is to keep you under surveilance, and to heal your vampirism."

He kept holding her against the wall as he spoke fearing she would run.

"I'm not going to keep you chained, or as a pet, I want us to cooperate. I will make sure everyone is safe."

He looked into her eyes "You wonder why I didn't kill you, and the truth is I don't know, all I can think right now is that Marquis left you alive for a reason, usually all that is left are corpses, so you are important, maybe it will come for you and this will be over soon."

He took a deep breath "I need you to trust me, I know that we just met, but I am being sincere."

Maria couldn’t help but growl as he still refused to release her. Why did he keep insisting that he needed her help? Couldn’t he do this himself? Surely he’d been a slayer or vampire killer or whatever he was called. She struggled against his hold, trying to break free of his gasp. It nearly worked but despite the fact that she was a vampire, he was still a man which meant he was still stronger than her.

"I'm not going to keep you chained, or as a pet, I want us to cooperate. I will make sure everyone is safe."

“Isn’t that a little contradictory?” Maria asked, tilting her head to the side. “I mean, if you have to kill a vampire, then technically you’re still killing them and that would put them in harms way.” She knew he was going to start talking about how they were monsters so she didn’t give him the chance.

“I mean, it sucks that your wife got killed but that has nothing to do with me. As for not keeping me chained, that’s still contradictory because you won’t let me go. I mean, of course I’m gonna run. I don’t know you and you’re holding me hostage as if I killed your wife.”

Maria sighed, “I already told you, I don’t know who did this to me, where that person is, or how to even find him so really I’m useless to you.” It was partial truth. She didn’t know who Mark was, she wasn’t friends with him, had no clue where to find him, and didn’t have anyway to contact him…unless she called Terry but there was no way she was doing that.

He growled, this woman really knew how to get on his nerves... how many excuses did he need before killing her?

"If you had killed my wife you would be dead now. I know who did this to you, and no trace was ever left behind other than a body, if you were turned it was for a reason. A reason I don't understand, maybe he wanted a girlfriend or something, in any case it'll be just a matter of time, until Marquis is looking for you."

He grabbed her by the wrist and begun to drag her back into the house.

"Now do us both a favor and begin to cooperate, as I said with some luck this will be over soon, Marquis dead, you back a normal human, and I'll never will have to see you again."

He forcefully pushed her inside, and locked the door after them.

"I said I wouldn't keep you in chains but if you keep trying to escape I might have to."

Maria scoffed at that but said nothing because he continued talking about how after he killed Marquis she'd be human again and allowed to go free. "You sure about that? I'll never have to see you again huh?" She scoffed again, shaking her head. This was totally ridiculous. If she got out of this alive, she was never going on another blind date again!

She winced as he pulled her back inside. "Hey, can you loosen up a little? That hurts!" She snapped, glaring at him. "You know, I hardly know you but I really don't like you." She was actually thankful that she hadn't told him her name and she probably never would.

When he pushed her inside, she never tripped over the rug and sent him another glare. "I really, really, really don't like you..." she growled.

"I said I wouldn't keep you in chains but if you keep trying to escape I might have to."

"Wow, you're sooo sweet." She said sarcastically, "Tell me, did your dearly departed wife enjoy this dominating nature of yours? Cause it annoys the hell out of me."

"Yes, I'm lovely and sweet, I don't like you either kid" She never had told him her name, right? the bitch insisted to call him Jake anyway.

He walked around the room, almost pacing as if tryng to calm himself down, she really managed to get on his nerves.

"And yes, my wife and I had our "fun" He left it there, there was no need to elaborate and she probably didn't care anyway.

He decided to try to dig more important stuff again "So you were picked up at the street? Someone hit on you on a nightclub? What happened? You might not know where we can find Marquis, but you must have some memory of what you were doing before you were turned."

Maria shuddered in disgust when he mentioned the vague 'fun' he and his wife shared. She was glad he didn't go into detail because she didn't really want to know. That was disgusting. She was being sarcastic and ...just gross! She watched while he paced back and forth, back and forth, over and over and over. It was annoying.

Then he started trying to pry into how she met Mark. She was onto him and wasn't going to let him know anything about her date. "Yeah, I was clubbing..at the one club Dark Desires..." She was lying of course, they'd just gone to dinner and that was it. "And well I was talking with some guy and I guess I got a little intoxicated because everything else is a blur."

It was another partial lie, there were things that were blurry but not all of it. She clearly remembered that Terry had set her up on a date and that the date bit her neck. She wasn't going to out her friend though. It was amazing that they had been friends since junior high. Never the less, she would not rat out an old friend...no matter what!

"Do you have any idea if whatever bit you was the same guy you were talking to? Otherwise the only clue we have is this Dark Desires place, we have to go there, but I would at least like to have something else to ask about rather than someone that looked intoxicating"

He walked again, part because he wanted to get a book from the bookshelf, partly because his walking seemed to annoy her.

"Do you have any recollection of how you got "intoxicated" did someone gazed at you? was it something you breathed? did you feel an energy shift? felt yourself weakening?"

He handed her the book which explained different ways vampires used to bait victims, into their areas, he kept asking becuase he really hoped she would remember something.
