Why is Greenland Even a topic?

Trump wants the distinction of being the first president since 1898 to expand the American territory.

That's pretty much it.
He could always get Puerto Rico to be the 51st state. Of course that would mean two more Democratic Party Senators and a half-dozen Representatives. . . .

Can't really say how the party system would shake out there. Up to now, local politics in PR has revolved around the issue of the island's future constitutional status -- there is a statehood party, an independence party, and a party favoring indefinite continuation of the status quo. Statehood would resolve all that once and for all and the parties would realign around other issues. Presumably one party that caucuses with the Dems would emerge, and one that caucuses with the Pubs -- a Latin Catholic culture is conservative enough that they have a chance.

Serioulsly, Trump is reminding me more and more of a cerain German politician who ranted and raved about anschluss, and leibensraum, and resources and stuff.

Never thought I'd say that but he's sure displaying all the same signs.......

How Trump’s rhetoric is shattering allied trust

Greenland, Venezuela, and now possibly Iran — the number of places where the United States is or could soon be militarily involved is growing. At the same time, Russia’s war against Ukraine continues, increasingly slipping out of the spotlight. In a wide-ranging conversation with DW Washington Bureau Chief Ines Pohl, retired U.S. General Ben Hodges offers a blunt and deeply critical assessment of his country's current foreign and security policy. He warns of serious damage to NATO, questions the lack of long-term strategy behind recent military actions, and explains why Ukraine is far from losing — and why that still matters for Europe’s security.

I hope the people who voted for Trump is ready to pay the price.
Even if USA goes winning out of this it will cost a lot!
He's destroyed our soft power centers, destroyed trust with most of our partners, left treaties unilaterally..... he's taken decades of trust and shredded them

All while his supporters cheer him on.

They have no idea what we've already lost.

And our Congress sits on their hands.

Putin has to be licking his chops about now.

His boy, Trump, is breaking up NATO.
I think this was the plan all along with the attack on Ukraine. But there was this Biden guy who came between Trump and Putin and stalled the plan for them.

The tone against Europe from Trump and his gang has been negative all along. I don't think we can do right even if we danced to his pipe as he wish. I think he would raise the number for example NATO until Europe says no. Then he will say that we are not cooperative and split up NATO (if it hasn't been split over Greenland already).

Danish Intelligence Confirms The Russia-China Threat To Greenland

A 2025 Intelligence Assessment by the government of Denmark highlights the long term Russian and Chinese 'threat' in Arctic waters, at a moment Greenland officials have rejected the US assertion that the large resource-rich island and its waters are being gradually influenced and taken over by the Russia/China 'menace'.

Trump has recently stated, "We need that because if you take a look outside of Greenland right now, there are Russian destroyers, there are Chinese destroyers and, bigger, there are Russian submarines all over the place. We’re not gonna have Russia or China occupy Greenland, and that’s what they’re going to do if we don’t."

While Trump has already proven he often first sets his interventionist policy and agenda, and then goes looking for a justification in a post hoc fallacy kind of way (a longstanding tradition among pretty much all American presidents, sadly), the Danish intelligence report does seem to add general weight to Trump's arguments.

So the US could deploy troops to Greenland with our current alliance.

But let's invade and take them over

Or let's waste money and buy them

Fucking idiots

I don't know if you read thru the rapport, but it in short words said that since the US increased their interest in Greenland, the risk of Russia and China getting more interested has increased, and a risk of more Russian and Chinese ships in the area around Greenland, Bering Strip and the Artic sea will increase the risk of a confrontation.
It says nothing about "Russian and Chinese ships are all over Greenland".

And now I read in the evening paper that two Republikan and nine Democrat Senators have flown to Copenhagen to instill some courage to the Danish Government and the Danish people.

There are still some clever republikans. :)

Seems more like confrontation, picking fights. Also, another distraction with homefront problems. Consider the source of the story and their reviews with conspiracy theories, less than factual reporting and low credibility.
