Winter Holiday Contest - the support thread

My entry has now accumulated 27 votes so I am officially IN the contest.

From the PC’s I cannot fail to note how many are AH Regulars. Thanks, guys!

Nine months ago, whatever I wrote, in the email-driven group of which I was a member, would at best have an audience of twenty people.

By this morning, my latest effort received 3,320 {read/view}s. If only one in ten indicates someone who has actually read the composition all the way through, that represents a 1660 percent increase in audience.

Santa has already been very good to me regarding my writing hobby. I wish to offer my gratitude to all the busy little elves here at Literotica who have made this possible — even those elfin spirits who write such enigmatical feedback!

Thank you.

I had my competition story all worked out in my head as I usually do but I sat down to write today and found I couldn't be arsed even though I have making myself very excited for the last two days making up the story! HELP have I got what is commonly known as writer's block???

Burley,

Your post confirms why I encourage people to enter the contests. You get far more exposure than a normal submission.

Not all the attention might be welcome.

A contest entry gets more views, more votes and usually more feedback than your other stories. There can even be a spin-off to your older stories that otherwise will only be found by chance.

And it is all FREE!

I think that every contest entrant ends up winning even if all they get is publicity.

yep~

Burley...way to go...I really enjoyed your tale
it was refreashing...

Munro~

maybe a tad bit of blocked writing
but a story that knaws at ya to get out
will work your fingers for you...grin...just sit
back and type and enjoy...

Ogs right to an extent...
I don;t write to win (expectations
bring disappointments ) but the contests
do generate more reads and a fun kinship
with others writing about a topic...Christmas, etc...
I have had over 20 wonderful comments and even
more great feedback...the three negative comments
are but a drop in the bucket and show that they are
negative...there are some shallow and vintictive
and/or unhappy people, compassion for ignorance!
...most are enjoying the diversity of stories
about the seasons holiday I for one am....grin...
gotta take the 5 votes with the one votes
or vise versa, so thanks to Og king of the last
place entrants...we can look forward to loseing
which I may get this contest according to my ratings
...grin

so think of something moving and let the story
move your fingers...and good luck~

Thanks hon - I'll try - the fingers are clacking as we speak - well maybe not!!

We've noticed something with our stories since we've been back....anytime we get ANY type of decent public comment....and thanks EroticReaderRoxy for your very kind words... we get 1-bombed. MULTIPLE times. Today's example:

Before nice PC: 20 votes, 4.86
After nice PC: 22 votes, 4.77

I guess getting GOOD feedback does not equate to getting GOOD scores.

And another thing...as long as I am whining/bitching/moaning. A good many of our private comment emails start with "wow, this was long, but...." and then say good things about our work.

Maybe we're trying too hard. We try to write REAL stories...with characters that have depth and a good storyline. If it ends up being long....has that really become such a bad thing? We enjoy reading a good lengthy story to each other at night when we are winding down. Unfortunately, it does seem that length and depth have become major negatives. It looks like we won't even get enough votes to compete in this competition.

*sigh*

Time for us to rethink our participation. It gets depressing to work so hard and then be score badly because, in the words of one private comment, "it's just too fucking long", or when someone does take the time to read and comment, trolls trash it.

Sorry..... rant over.

Lusty Lovers,

The length issue is a tough one but don't despair. I did a quick check of the top ten stories in most of the major categories and, to my surprise, found that the vast majority were multi-pagers. For instance, 23 or the first 25 Lesbian stories were two or more pages in lenght, with most being three pages or longer. Those same figures held up in the other categories.

That said, the attention span of the reading public has gotten shorter. Newspaper articles have shrunk in length to reflect this reality. Combine that with the fact many people do not like reading from a computer screen, and there's your problem.

Stick to doing what you feel most comfortable writing. Apparently a five pager may get fewer views but seems to have a better chance of ending up with a higher score.

It does seem that the contest has generated many more votes and comments than anything else I've done here.

O.K. my first story has 129 votes (and better ones) than my contest story but hey it's been here longer. It only has 2 comments though.

This one has 11 comments (wow!) 10 are even mostly good. Most I notice are from here though.

VB.... I'm officially in and out of the contest at the same time. 93 votes mostly bad...lol.... my vote count works... just the score doesn't.

Damn... I have more to read now.

Just as a follow up to that last... you better watch yer ass.... with my scores I may be fighting ya fer the worst story!

Not a chance. I have just submitted my next: 'Christmas Fairy Ch.01 Growing' (4,700 odd words). Ch.02 yet to be written and then there is the fifth entry specifically designed to be a last place contender (10,000 words and growing).

If I submit the last one at the last possible moment there will be no votes at all. How many will read say 12,500 words between the closure of entries and vote before the last day? A rating of 0.00 divided by 0.00 votes = zero. No one can beat that!

Damn you are one hard man to beat.... so guess I need to save my next one for the last minute so I can at least tie?

It is a question of timing. Too late and you (or I) won't have that story in the contest. Begging to Lauren does work - sometimes.

I bet begging to Laurel would work even better. :D

Why not both?

I'm always begging Lou for a sight of her disappearing ass.

If they're female, I'm begging--either for love or mercy.

Which just goes to show what sad people we are.

We'll even beg for it.

I hope some of the AH ladies notice.

As I mentioned about a week ago, I couldn't come up with a Winter Holiday Contest entry, so I decided to write a spoof of The Night Before Christmas.

I hoped that once the pressure was off I would be able to come up with some kind of real story.

Yesterday I got what I imagined was an idea, and I wrote the story out. All it needs now is a bit of German dialogue retro-fitting.

It is about Santa Claus and a Sci-Fi device. Not quite as intellectual as Santa Claus Conquers The Martians perhaps, but then, what is?

As soon as SnoopDog vets the German, it should be ready for submission and escape onto the lists a few days later.

Watch out for it!

You have been warned.

Title: 'Santa Claus Uber Alles'?

Third entry is now posted.

Christmas Fairy Ch.01 is based on a Piers Anthony short story 'The Bridge'. I just took his idea further. Ch.02 if ever written will get to be even more weird.

So far it has been 4 and 5 bombed. Someone wants me to miss out on last place.

I hypothesize that the bored or mildly disgruntled viter wil never click to page two, let alone 3 4 or 5. So you only get the ones who like a longer story sticking around to vote. Plus the odd flamer.

That's what I assume, Sirhugs. But we all know the old joke about what can happen when one assumes. Of course, making an ass of myself is a major part of my repertoire.

Burley,

You've still got a lot of time to shave off before getting close to my record, less than an hour.

It was the same deal as yours, except I submitted about ten CDT. Just before eleven, I went to the Halloween contest list to knock off a few crits. Lo (not to mention, behold) there it was. That represented the highlight of the contest for my poor, pathetic piece. It's now around 4.45 which (coincidentally?) is where my entry in the current contest is mired.

I'll be taking a look, voting (at least once) and leaving a PC this weekend.

Rumple Foreskin

RF,

Maybe I am insulting Laurel's efforts. That was just the first time I looked in the New list, and there it was, 2nd from the top!

Maybe I should have waited until after the weekend.

It has already received two votes. The first one was a 3.00 and the second one brought the vote down to 2.00.

The story IS kind of silly --- even for a Sci-Fi/Fantasy --- but I didn't think it was THAT bad.

I'm going to bed. Maybe it it will be back up to 3.00 by tomorrow noon.

I received some signed feedback on 'Dinner with Friends' complaining that the heroine had an unhealthy attitude to marriage because I hadn't mentioned that her husband was long dead.

I implied it in one sentence but probably I assumed too much. I didn't think Lit readers would really care whether she was married or not. Are we expected to write morality tracts?

I replied to the feedback but I wonder what its author would think of the 'Loving Wives' category? Or 'Incest' or...
