Wisconsin had been a "purple" state since 2010, but partisan Republican gerrymandering had made the state the worst gerrymandered state in the country, where a 51-49 slim Republican majority translate to a 70-30 red congressional delegation.

Then the governor's seat was flipped to Democratic
More importantly, the ultra-partisan Wisconsin Supreme court changed from 6-3 Republican to 5-4 Democrat and all of a sudden a lot of super-sketchy rush-passed Republican laws were immediately declared unconstitutional.

Recognizing the very real possibility that Democrats could "do unto them what they'd be doing to Dems" over the past 14 years and create a 70-30 Democratic advantage in Congress, Republicans "graciously" conceded a return to historical norms, 50-50 split....likely to soon (within 4 years) become 60-40 Dem due to changing population demographics.

All voting barriers to non-white folks (primarily in Milwaukee) removed.
The ability of college students to vote on-campus in elections (instead of skipping school to return to their hometowns to vote) remains up in the air.

The evil Republican/Russian asset Ron Johnson still resides in the US Senate so there is still work to be done.

I had a good feeling about Susan Crawford winning.

I have a fuckton of friends and relatives in Wisconsin, and even the Trump voters were making noises about not liking what was going on with: Musk, DOGE, the deportations, the tariffs / economy, the extortion of Ukraine (some NOW acknowledge that Trump is Putin’s puppet), the trashing of alliances (especially NATO & Canada) and America’s image around the world, etc, etc.

Some of my more religious F&Rs were particularly upset with Trump about the suspension of foreign aid (though they are also rural folk, so it might have had more to do with the impact on farmers than the death & suffering the suspension of aid was likely to cause.)

I will be very interested to see how big the final margin is when all the ballots are counted.

The ultraconservative ultrarestrictive abortion law being challenged in lower courts has virtually no chance of surviving at the new Supreme Court. Twenty years of gerrymandered congressional seats appears to be at an end as well.

College students, long the bane of the white patriarchy in Wisconsin, turned out in huge numbers and voted for Janet Protasiewicz by a 4-1 margin, allowing Protasiewicz to essentially coast to a 54-46% victory that polls had rated a "toss up".

Gen Z voters appear to be taking no prisoners. This does not bode well for aging Boomer-addled MAGA nation.

Two years later and the song remains the same. Aging MAGA anti-abortion crone retires, fresh-faced pro-choice liberal wins. Liberal majority goes from 4-3 to 5-2 tonight, effectively cancelling Musk's attempt to "purchase" the Wisconsin Supreme Court. All anti-abortion and gerrymandering attempts by MAGA are DOA for at least the next year.
