World Cup 2026

Well deserved Norway win against an average Brazil who sometimes live off their history. Haaland is the football equivalent of a Terminator. Doesn’t do a lot but deadly when given half a chance.

The Balogun affair is a disgrace and screams of corruption between Infantino and the US administration. If this happened anywhere else in the world, it would be condemned as unacceptable. On top of the problems Iran faced and the “happy dance” from a senior government official, it’s leaving a poor taste.

England game already delayed by an hour so probably going to bed

I feel like that red card was excessive, but handling it this way really does leave a bad taste. Sigh.

All sports have contentious decisions that can be looked at with the world’s most exact science of hindsight but when the local government get involved, that’s just unprecedented. If the card had been overturned on appeal from a team, that’s understandable, but I’ve never heard of a red card ban being suspended.

It's very very iffy for a gov to be getting involved
 
This Balogun thing absolutely sucks. If they'd changed that red card to a yellow... is that possible? But postponing the suspension just looks terrible. It makes the US team look like they're benefiting from some disgusting wink-wink relationship between the Current Administration and FIFA.... It's a complete clusterfuck. (FIFA Peace Prize, anyone??)

Plus it has to be v. Belgium, my Team Magritte friends....... sigh.
 
Did the government actually get involved for reals? It wasn't just wink-wink???????

Exactly that. If there was an official appeal to have the card downgraded from red to yellow, that's fine. To “suspend” the ban is just appalling. As for the made up Peace Prize ….. if this had all happened in China or Russia there would be an outrage

It is the American way...our way or no way.

Does not matter if it was unintentional. It was a penalty. It went through the process...video review...it was correctly deemed dangerous. It warranted the Red Card. Did Trump threaten FIFA? Absolutely he did. Cheaters cheat. It is what he does.

Oh my fucking god, I didn't know Trump got involved. 😳 This is mortifying. How many times do we have to apologize for all the crap he's done.

I am so, so, embarrassed.

I was so hopeful during this World Cup, with all the international love here, and now it's ruined. I just wanted One Good Thing and now it's ruined as well.
 
Fifa doing mad / slightly shady shit is normal, Having a local gov influence their decision is a very slippery slope
(if that is what happened )
