but Merelan's post in another thread got me to thinking ... i may be a slut but i am not a whore ... i would never ever do it for money ... never ...

really the only way i could ever see that happening is if i lose control of my senses ... i had no control over what i was thinking / doing ... which i know happens to many drug addicts who are on the streets ...

but aside from that i guess ... even if i was really desperate for money ... i would never do it for money ... i may be a slut ... but damn i'm not a whore ...

oh yea ... except i would do Robert Redford in that movie for a million dollars <cause frankly i could use a million bucks right now > ...

but you know what? real life isn't like that ...

basically selling your*self* for money or some type of compensation. In the traditional sense, I couldn't do it either, but selling oneself comes in many forms. You can be a sellout, as a salesperson I sell myself all the time, you can sell your thoughts, your ideas and inventions and all that is ok. But selling your body?

Aren't models selling their bodies? Actors, actresses?

I'd sell pictures of myself for money.. is that selling myself sexually? Is that being a whore?

And what makes it degrading or unsavory? If they are tasteful pictures does it make it ok? If I were to be a high-class call girl instead of a $2 whore on the streets.. does that make it better?

Women in Amsterdam sell themselves legally for sex all the time and from a recent expose I listened to these women say they enjoy their work and feel no shame in what they do. Some of them are highly educated and have a lot of marketable skills, yet they choose sex for money.

This brings up an interesting side note... one I haven't thought about much... what is the technical difference between whore and slut?

I like the power behind words like that - I have used the word slut in stories and poems... and I do not mean it in a derogotory manner. I have mixed feelings about the word whore. Because of how people may interpret it. Slut is a good term in my mind... whore seems like it may be somewhat derogatory but then again, there are times - in role play - OR just to drive in the power of a moment that it may be the "right" word to use.

For what its worth, Webster definitions:

Slut - "a promiscuous woman; especially : PROSTITUTE b : a saucy girl : MINX"

and

Whore - 1) a woman who engages in sexual acts for money, 2)a male who engages in sexual acts for money.

There are other definitions but I think those are the ones applicable to this conversation.

With that in mind... if those are how most people interpret the use of slut and whore, there is a distinct difference in meaning. A slut is someone who loves sex (and promiscuous definitely implies with more than one partner - i.e. Webster again, "not restricted to one sexual partner"). A whore has sex for money and that does not necessarily imply she/he enjoys it. A person could be both a slut and a whore.

Would I do it for money? Good question. I think not. I'm not in financial difficulty so there is no motivation to have sex with someone I'm not attracted to. If I truly needed money? Perhaps I would - I certainly see no shame in it. Prostitution is like any other profession and should be legalized. I can think of other careers I would be less likely to pursue than prostitution.

Now... present day circumstances... if someone were to offer me a million dollars and I was not, in any way, attracted to them? Well - I'd have to think really, really hard about it - a million dollars is a hell of a lot of money.

Let me add another philosophical twist to this question. Even if you wouldn't do it for a million dollars for yourself and your family. Have you thought about all the good a million dollars would do for a charity of your choosing? A single sex act vs. the good you could do with the money from that act?

Seriously, no, I've never had sex for money but I've been solicited in that way before. I don't have a problem going after what I want and although I've been in financial straits before, I never had to resort to that.

Prostitution is legal in my town and we have a few registered "gentlemen’s clubs". A great deal of the ladies that work there are single mothers. On welfare they would be lucky to get 300 a fort night. Working as they do in a legal and safe environment they earn 280 plus an hour. I love my job but if I was in their situation with no other way of making money in the hope of being able to provide a good future for my children I would do it in a heart beat. Stigma surrounding Prostitution is changing and eventually will be accepted.

I often hear the argument that they are home wreckers etc. Personally if my partner felt the need to get sexual gratification else where I would prefer them to go to a prostitute. A few reasons here the big one being that they are not investing time and effort in another person away from their family. Here I refer to relationship building time. They have no worry of the person coming in between the family unit. Almost all prostitutes are professional. Like any profession it has its trouble makers.

Some of the men I know prefer to go to a gentlemen’s club rather than spend 1-200 taking a lady out some times not even getting sex at the end of the night out.
