Plus keep in mind, if Supes was absorbing solar energy for years and years -- from early childhood to adulthood -- he could potentially have a lot stored up. At the Earth's surface, the solar output is roughly 1004 watts per square meter. Build that up over 20 years and then use some of that energy to dip up and just out of the atmosphere, and suddenly he can absorb much more energy per second. And if he were to fly closer to the sun, he would get more and more energy built up the closer he got.
He would, however, need to use smaller amounts of oxygen in his blood more efficiently to exist without breathable air for more than a couple minutes. We would also need to assume that either his bioelectric field or flesh durability was able to protect him from the loss of atmospheric pressure.
One thing that bugs me about him, though, is that he supposedly absorbs more Vitamin D from the Sun than humans, yet he is pale. Technically, his skin should be darker than the darkest African, but I'm willing to write that off as something to do with how Kryptonian skin works with melanin.
