Just remembered I hadn't replied to this; sorry! I was partly joking, but also partly curious about what you'd said elsewhere, so thank you for your reply.

And you're right, this does sound playfu; I can't imagine putting it that way if I were seriously annoyed. In those circumstances, a conversation is indeed what is mainly required. I have sometimes felt that following up with something else may work well, and sometimes not.
