2008 News & Views: Discussion and Announcements for the Survivorphile

Happy to turn the thread back over to the Survivor's Contest. Perhaps if you turned the contest back over to those trying to use it constructively rather than obsessing in a grab for a little bit of cash you claim you don't need and dumbing down the site's story content as a result, everyone (but you) would be happy. ;)

It pisses you off that someone like me has money, huh? Because you continually mention it.

Yeah, I'm rich, but been there and done that. The money is not why I write. I write because I must.

Did you know that I have a Bentley Continental GT...blue. I also have a Ferrari, too...yellow.

It sucks to be me, but you wish you had my money. I don't have to work and haven't worked a day in almost 20 years and won't work a day for the rest of my life. I'm in control of my own life and destiny. How's that publishing business working for you. You seem to have an awful lot of tme on your hands. You're always here.

Now, as far as the Survivor Contest, I dare say that there is not another participant who has worked as hard to win the contest. I'm not obessive as you are, I'm possessed.

I can write non-stop for hours. I love my life. I love that I have all this free time to write and write. I love that my window of creative inspiration is always open. It's taken me years to learn to do that.

You're just jealous, Ace. If you had been nicer to me, I may have hired you as my editor. I could have thrown a few grand your way. Money doesn't mean anything to me. I give more away in a year than you earn, no doubt.

So, don't tell me about the Survivor Contest. You're the one who snubs your nose at it and at all who participate in it. You think we all are illiterates and you are the only writer here.

Either you are sitting there drinking and on your way to getting drunk or you are already there. You must be lonely to be writing back and forth to me, when you hate me so much.

I love my life. You should see my house. You'd die. Money doesn't make me happy, but I wouldn't want to have to live without it.

Got to go. I'm invited to a party tonight. Ta ta!

Can someone just gild that post and sticky it to the top of this forum? Then BOSTONFICTIONWRITER won't have to trot it out every time he feels threatened, he can just look at it, glittering in all its glory.

Sufffering Jesus H Christ.

I continually mention it? Evidence that I continually mention it, please. Just another lie.

Sort of lost your self-perceived "good humor" there, haven't you?

He's just trying to convince himself again that he's loaded, sr. It's a bit hard to maintain the facade sometimes.

Funny how the lottery win only came up this year. Last December, just before he lost first place to MungoParkIII, he posted this:
If I win the Survivor Contest, that's great. I've never won anything in my life. My greatest lottery won was with the birth of my identical twin daughters. Everything else pales in comparison. Okay, the two World Series that the Red Sox won and the 3 Superbowls that the Patriots won and their soon-to-be 16-0 season is high on the list, too.
Then he had the mysterious cheque for $5000 mailed to him by some anonymous fan.
We didn't buy that, so now he's won the lottery and is filthy rich.

Y'know, with all his posturing and immaturity (both in his stories and his debating technique) I sometimes wonder if he's actually old enough to be here.

Wow!

I thought I had it bad when I was posting stories here! :(

Isn't there a way that we can all just get along and agree to disagree without being so hateful?

We should all endeavor to remember the reason that we first came to this site and started to post ... for the love of writing. Along the way, we all got wrapped up in getting Ws or Es and complaining as to why others received what we did not.

The contest is a fantastic way for all of us who enjoy writing to step out of our comfort zones. True, some of the stories may not be as wonderful as others and I think that just illustrates the outer edges of the comfort zones. God knows some of mine were terrible but the point was that I made an attempt.

It shouldn't matter how many more words or how much better the illustration is from one author to another, we are all here to write and to learn through the exercise.

I understand that everyone is kinda hot right now but please take a step back and remember why you first came to the site ... and keep that beginning happy space.

Love To All :)

Very well said, Velvet. I've said the same things myself, maybe not as nicely, but I have said them.

Good luck to you and ALL the Survivor contestants. May the best WRITER win.

What this rule means is that if you are posting a novel, it is only considered as a novel. You can't suddenly, post one chapter as a novel and the next chapter in a different category.

You've novel is considered a novel. Now, if you were to post one of your chapters elsewhere, in a different category, that would not be allowed.

In my case, all of my multi-chapter stories are not posted in the novel category, if that is what you are suggesting, by referring to another author in the survivor contest, as all of my novels chapters are posted under novels.

What's your point, Erin?

Actually you do have a few submissions that are chapter stories that have a submission in the novels category.

What I was thinking of doing was if i continue to be so behind in my novel I was going to post the last few chapters in other categories since I wouldn't be able to reach the 7500 word count. I read that and wondered if it was still accurate because if it is then I will not get the points for those stories.

You know that I'm obsessive compulsive about my score card and want to make sure that it's as accurate as possible. That's the reason I took down my scorecard, I was making mistakes updating it on my computer and on the site and it was driving me crazy.

I have no chapter stories in the novel category.

Love So Young was never posted in the Survivor Contest last year. I pulled it before I finished the novel because a publisher wanted to publish it.

The last chapter was not written until 2008 after the 2007 Survivor Contest was over and done, which is why I posted that chapter under novels.

Now, you've already posted your chapter as a novel. Since that chapter is already posted and already counted, you can't repost it. You can't suddenly switch from one to the other because it suits your purpose. That according to the Survivor rules would be cheating.

Yet, it wouldn't surprise me if they bend the rules for you, as they have done for others in the past. They don't like me. They don't want to see me win the Survivor Contest.

So...go for it. WTF!

If you notice Erin, I have not posted any of my Love So Young chapters, but for the last chapter. The other chapters were previously posted as Never Too Old For Love So Young, which is why none of them appear on my scorecard.

Only, the last chapter appears on my scorecard as a novel post because it is over 7,500 words and it was written in 2008 and never previously posted on Literotica.

Got it!

That rule would definitely still hold true this year.

If you've got any concerns about a specific story, I'd recommend alerting one of the contest moderators (probably Crim, since Lauren doesn't seem to be around much lately).

You have the following options, from the way I understand it:

- break a story up in chapters of 750 or more words and post each chapter in its appropriately themed category (but no chapter may go in the N&N category)

- break the story up into chapters of 7500 or more words and submit each chapter to N&N

- break the story up into chapters, some of which might exceed 7500, and submit each chapter to N&N. Only those chapters with 7500 words or more will count towards your Survivor score

The three options above may not be combined, if you do so, part of the story will probably be moved into a different category or you will receive some other point penalty.

Thank you Jen. That makes perfect sense. It's not urgent so I'm assuming one of the moderators will see this eventually and confirm.

Only...it's too late. She's already posted the story. Now, if she breaks her story that she posted as a novel and reposts it as ten 750 word stories, which is what she wants to do, then according to rule 8, she can't do that. She can't repost a story that's already been posted to Literotica.

Allow me to relieve you of your indecision, Erin.

Unless you can post your 75,000 word novel as one hundred 750 word stories, I wouldn't bother.

I plan on ending the contest with 1,037 points. Now, if you think that you can beat that score, then knock yourself out.

Oh, wait, if Erin can repost stories, may I take all of my 2,000-5,000 word stories and rewrite them and repost them as 750 word stories?

I mean, it's only fair. If she can do it, then I should be allowed to do that, too.

Do you see how ridiculous this is, Erin?

Yes it is ridiculous. I agree. I'm not going to report the 4 chapters of my novella I've already posted. You know how hard it would be to find a good break around 750 words to seperate it into 100 little stories :)

(please understand that sarcasm is intended, I'm going to read a book now)

Actually, I have no idea how difficult it would be to break 75,000 words into one hundred 750 word stories. You're the queen of that castle.

"Gees, I'm so friggin' funny."

I was randomly going through posts from past Survivor contests and came across this note from Lauren dated 4/26/2007

"What cannot possibly be defended, though, is that in a multi-part story that covers one or more regular story categories, suddenly a Novels and Novellas chapter pops up. That just won't cut it. Either the whole series is a Novel or a Novella, or it isn't. Any chapter posted under Novels and Novellas as a part of a multi-part story in or spanning a number of other regular categories, will simply be ignored for points in Survivor. The same is valid for the opposite. If a regular category pops up in the middle of a Novels and Novellas series, it will also be disregarded."

Does this rule still hold true for the 2008 competition? I ask because I know of at least one competitor who has done this and if I don't get my NaNoWriMo goal completed I might do the same.

Yes, this rule still holds true. If someone has done so, please send me a pm with the info.

Hi, Velvet. It's good to hear from you again. Most of us are not hassling with anybody, except the one guy who is hassling with us. Except for him, it's basically a pretty friendly group, as it usually is.

You know, George, you people have been up my ass since I joined here. You don't like it that I'm capable of writing so many stories.

If you and the rest of your nitwitted friends would stop slandering me and throwing barbs and making insulting comments about me, I'd never post here.

The only time I post here is when one of you assholes writes something about me, as you did just now.

There's plenty of blame to go around here, George. You, by a long shot, are not the innocent victim. Let's point some fingers at the instigators. If anyone is an abused victim, it's me.
