2023 "Tales of Leinyere" Story Event: Official Support Thread

Does Leinyere have any Gods or Goddesses roaming around? I have a cast of characters who follow a mischievous goddess who may get into a fight with her peers and be expelled from their current world, would Leinyere be a good "landing ground" for them?

Leinyere does have a pantheon! You can find it in the notes doc linked on the first post on this thread, but I'll paste it below as it currently stands:

So far we haven't opened up the idea of other realms or any kind of crossover. I think if that's the story you want to write, do it, but let's be careful not to open up the multiverse can of worms too widely. If they get banished to the world Leinyere is on, it doesn't need to be a one-way trip, but I don't think we want any interdimensional doorways propped open.

The stories would still be good stories if characters from various elsewheres kept dropping by, but it would be a different kind of story than what we've been doing here so far. Also, I think the existence of "other realms" would be super shocking for any of the people of Leinyere, especially the more educated.

But those are just my thoughts. What do the rest of you think?

Anyway, Gods and Goddesses:
  • Kelthala
    • Protector of Innocence and Virtue
    • Four-armed
  • Nephys AKA Ca’chew AKA Princess of Flies
    • Goddess of Disease
  • Kitara AKA Kwicka AKA She Behind the Blade
    • Goddess of Vengeance
  • Tomuun AKA Ul’dirah AKA the Weeping Mother
    • Goddess of the Sea
  • Egan
    • God of Trade and Profit
    • Golden-Handed
  • Shall’a, AKA Cloudbringer, AKA The Whore
    • Goddess of War
  • Krall’a, AKA He Who Cleanses, AKA The Cuck
    • God of Peace
    • ...these two don’t get along, but stay together for the sake of the children.
  • Aersus, AKA The Trickster
    • God of Wine and Pleasure
    • Chaotic-good
  • Systava, AKA Zhyve AKA The Bride
    • Goddess of Joy and Celebration
    • Formerly Ouksenn, AKA Duzhde AKA Divine Sentinel
      • Goddess of Loneliness and Fortification
      • Created the Greywood as a place to be alone
  • Cuvehr
    • Deity of Sex
    • Changes Race and Gender and Body Type at will
    • Enjoys Pleasure and Romance and Sensations
    • Surprisingly Chill, for a Deity
  • Alithea
    • Goddess of Knowledge
    • Often misgendered as Litheo, the God of Knowledge
  • Abasis, the Cat:
    • She who Dwells Below, Keeper of the Tombs, Queen of the Great Earth, Seer of Secrets, Lamenter, Mother of Many, Bringer of Gifts, Queen of All Riches, Receiver of the Dead, Receiver of Seed, She in the Tree, She of the Winnowing Fan, etc, etc. The Cat Abasis inhabits the transitional spaces between the world of the Living, and the world of the Dead. Cats are sacred to her; they watch, and they tell her what they see, and the bones of any bird or mouse a cat brings to you can be used to divine the future. She carries the souls of the dead to the underworld, and she brings new infant souls up into Life. She receives seed (heh heh) and returns new life to the soil.
  • The Dwarven Pantheon
    • Mother Earth - goddess of creation, stability, order, and justice
    • Father Fire - god of labor, knowledge, food, and war
    • Brother Air - god of chaos, trickery, love, and health
    • Sister Sea - goddess of death, destruction, loss, and magic

I think I can slip them in without opening up a can of worms. Warharun, Goddess of the Forests is exiled by Harvey God of the Underworld (really, that's his name in that relm) and she takes her followers with her and refuses to answer questions because "I'm a goddess and you're not." She's really that kind of goddess. Besides, dragons don't have to answer questions, neither do dragon shaped goddesses.

This was fun, and my story got a good response. Put me down for some kind of sequel. I have two stories in the works right now, but once I finish off one of them I can put some time in here. It will probably come down to the wire again, but I'll give it a go.

As a map-lover in real life, may I ask that an arrow be added to the map to indicate North? This would help writers and readers orient themselves, with phrases such as "they sailed north from Aqba to reach Morningwood at dawn," and the sun, of course, would rise on their right side.
And (I don't want to sound boring) [my wife often says I'm boring when I speak in footnotes and parentheses] (add a footnote: not always.)... May I ask the obvious? is a normal, Earth-like planet, with tides regulated by the moon and day/night in seasons regulated by the sun (as with Gandalf and Conan the Barbarian)? Or is it one of those Game of Thrones-type disaster planets, with Winters that last for decades?
However, in general, it looks like Australia to me.

Maybe something like Kai?
Why give it a name? The god could be held in such esteem that to give him a name made up by man would be blasphemous. They could call it all kinds of things like Moon Chaser or He Who Melts Ice what ever, but when someone asks "What's his name" the answer is always a stern look and a shaking head.

Is it called north? Could it be called "Highsun"? I had a nice comment about my use of slightly different terms for things. Landau/autolandau for a horse drawn carriage/motorised carriage, midsun meal, etc. Not too many, though.

I seem to recall that most stories referred to a single sun and a single moon. The temperate areas had six seasons, but I would assume that the different areas would view that differently - eg wet/dry seasons in the tropics.

I'm almost sure my story last year referred to "north/south/east/west."

But remember, there are many cultures in Leinyere, and as many languages and customs. No reason everyone has to use the same names for these things.

I apologize for my "North."
In the Fantasy genre the oldest trick is to pretend that magical things have come down to us "translated" from some supernatural language.
Of course, Hobbits do not use the names of days that we do, nor months and weeks.
But in order not to confuse the reader (already largely confused by unfamiliar names, place names and weapons) the writer indicates "it was Sunday, January 30," and everyone guesses that it was a winter day when many workers were resting (readers of other religions have been accustomed for centuries to "interpreting" the meaning of the word Sunday).
Beware that in Australia January is a summer month: for me it implies snow, for them hot.
Regarding the sun deity, same trick: for proverbs, sayings and rhyming poems, it's convenient to use the common noun of the English language "sun," conventionally (because it rhymes with "fun"), then each Nation can call it "River Dryer" or "Yellow Ball" or "Snow Melter"... it's just that it doesn't rhyme with "fun."

Does anybody know if there's somewhere in the forum that VAs hang out? I have some ideas for audio scripts for the Leinyere event, and I thought I'd see if anyone would want to record them if I wrote them...

There used to be an audiophiles thread in the Playground. I have no idea whether it's still active, but it was busy once upon a time. Ergo, there are plenty of Litsters who don't seem to mind churning out recordings of themselves. I'll go search for it and then see if I can link it here in an edit.

Sometimes, if you're social on the forum side, you can just ask someone to read your stuff. I once had someone send me an unsolicited recording of one of my scenes, and it was kind of an odd feeling listening to it. But definitely hot.

ETA: the thread I was thinking about seems to have disappeared. Odd. It was a HILARIOUS thread. Sorry!

Oh, well I found a similar and posted! Don’t know if it’s what you meant but oh well! We’ll see what happens! Thanks for the tip!

Hey @Rustyoznail what is the etymology for autolandau? I'm doing something that takes place late in the timeline, sith more advanced technology, like voice transmitting and receiving crystals, and I'm trying to think of what to call them. Leaning towards "aural prisms", but if there's a name that would fit better I'm open to it

Someone posted that they were going to use landau for horse drawn wagons, so I just swapped that for mobile in automobile. I didn't get too tricky. 😋

I made mention of Mages who could flick messages between towns. Maybe they use your device. "Remote Talkers", "Distant Speakers", "Mage Aural Devices"?

Oh, Nouh - might be worth posting a link to this in poetry. You never know, someone might have an epic tale waiting to come forth.

Ooh, what about “farsonic crystal”, and it eventually gets shortened to “farsonic” and then just “sonic”

"Number One, get the Port on the sonic and tell them that bloody dragon is stirring up trouble again."

Yep. That works. 😁
