Ama TANSTAAFL58

The only thing I can suggest is to expose him to life. Let him see the not so good parts. Let him see the nice neighborhoods and the not so nice ones. Let him see the dirt poor. Let him see that life is what you make of it and encourage him to talk about it. When you're able and feel safe, expose him to travel. Let him see life outside his bubble of protection. Be constant. Let him know you won't always be here...to always reach for the stars.

Has your grandson shared any of the innovative talents you possess? What is something you see in him that marvels you? From what you've shared, he possesses a true innocence. Encourage him using your engineering background to use that innocence to try something worthwhile and make a mere idea a reality. Or collaborate with him in his idea and your engineering prowess to build something better than you imagined. Take that softness and build upon it, encouraging a toughness. It may fail...at first, but never give up.

Thank you. He surprizes me with is ability in practical math including geometry. Likely because I taught him practical uses for math and geometry. I wants to be "a builder" and I'm encouraging that. He has an amazing talent for languages. He speaks perfect French with a horrible accent. Like really bad. I bet he'll be able to actually use it though.

Do you hunt or fish?

Do you ever have a desire to live off the grid?

I used to hunt, mostly deer. I have a 10 point buck to my credit. I don't have time or a place any more.

I like to fish whenever I can, but this year has even made that difficult. Although the salmon are running soon and the local fishing spot is open again...

That second question is funny. I have been considering building an off-grid summer cabin powered by solar panels and a windmill with a gas generator backup. I have given this a lot of thought and done research on various adjacent technologies such as propane refrigeration and a hydraulic ram pump to fill a tank or cistern, thereby reducing power consumption.

Its funny because I have spent my whole working life in the electricity business, working at generating stations. :D

Hockey. Surely you have preferences and strongly held opinions?

I will freely admit, in public and without reservation that I am a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and every other team in the NHL can kiss my ass. Especially the Bruins.

Even though:

  • They last won the Stanley Cup in 1967. I'm glad I was allowed to stay up late and watch that game.
  • They once blew a 4-1 lead with 10 minutes left in a playoff game against the hated Bruins (13MAY2013, a day that will live in infamy)
  • They lost a game to Carolina last season where the Hurricanes used a 42-year old Zamboni driver as a goalie
  • Wayne Gretzky and the LA Kings only got to the final in 1993 because of the worst call in sports history by the worst ref in the NHL in Game 6 of the Semi finals (Kerry Frazer failed to call Gretzky for a high stick that cut Leafs captain Doug Gilmour. (A five-minute major for drawing blood). Gretz should have still been in the penalty box when he scored the eventual OT game winner, tying the series at 3-3). Yes, I'm bitter.

Gordie Howe was the greatest of all time. I believe bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky agree with this.

I also live to see Olympic games between Canada and the US (men and women: they are always great games). I will really miss the now cancelled World Junior tournament that is held over the Christmas holidays. That's great hockey.

haha! I dated a guy from London. I don't really remember him but I do recall lots of Labatts and hockey.

The local Junior team, the London Knights have dominated their division in the OHL for years. They play in an arena that Labatt's owns the naming rights to (it is presently the Budweiser Gardens; Labatt's brews Bud in Canada)

Those are really cool. I wish I knew more about woodworking. I absolutely love finding things at flea markets. I'm not always lucky though.

What do you think is the most important thing someone should know about you?
Ha, I missed a couple.

The most important thing you should know about me?

It doesn't matter if you don't believe in Science. Science bats last.

Nice! What is a someday piece that turned into a reality out of need and necessity?

Sorry, I missed this one.

I built a pine bookcase with drawers on top that was supposed to be a rough piece for my workshop. The Ikea piece we had in the living room fell apart, so I had to clean it up and install it there. Its beside me now.

Since you have started this AMA thread, are there questions you would like to have been asked? What are some areas that we've missed that you think we should consider?

I enjoy asking you questions and your insightful answers.

Since you've been in the electric industry, what are some things you didn't touch on at work that now since there's time, you can address those now? Projects you've had in mind but never moved upon.

Your grandson is the apple of your eye, I see.

Just a thought, have you thought of this project:
Your grandson's knowledge of geometry and math to project that into real life. First fixing things around the house. Then upgrade that to building his own motorcycle or car. By the time he's of age to drive it, it will be done. Of course, I would suggest an American muscle car, but choose whatever he wants.

I've only ever seen one NHL game live. Black Hawks vs. Bruins. I cheered for Orr and got drenched with beer by a guy seated behind me. Was completely worth it.

A Muscle Car? I should have started ten years ago when I had my supercharged Pontiac Bonneville. A Motorcycle would be better, and I have thought about it. I was thinking a Triumph Bonneville or Honda CB750. Or a CanAm three wheeler (they have the stance and stability of a snowmobile). I wish the Ural bikes with a side car were more reliable, but everything I have read says they are junk.

You're showing your age. I only read about Bobby Orr in History Class. No, JK; sadly I was watching when he scored from mid-air. And When Henderson scored to beat the Russians (forever "the goal"). And when Sittler scored ten points in a game (never equalled). And every punch between Tiger Williams and Dave "the Hammer" Schultz.

If this hasn't already been done, this needs to be made in to a movie.

Did I mention every time I see your name I think it says "FANTAASTIC"?

What is a favorite childhood memory?

A motorcycle would be so cool for him when he gets to high school. Hopefully on days when rain or snow is NOT forecasted. Wouldn't it be nice to have him learn things from you to build a better bond and possibly build a career as well? Some kids have lawn mowing jobs. Wouldn't it be fun to have one who could repair or build a car or motorcycle by the time he reaches 10th grade?

What historical time periods are interesting to you?

Any time period where I could have worked as a Blacksmith. Particularly the time of the Norman Conquest (all those swords) and the 19th century. (You didn't ask, but my favourite TV show is "Forged in Fire")

I thought there would be more kink / BDSM / sex-related questions. I'm not asking for more, just surprized.

I spent my last nine months before retirement as an acting Section Manager in charge of a diverse team of Engineers. There is plenty wrong with the structure of the organization (as with lots of large companies) and I could see them more clearly as a Manager, In many case the answer was obvious. However, the company usually had multiple policies in place to prevent fixing them.

If this hasn't already been done, this needs to be made in to a movie.[/QUOTE} That would be a nightmare. (The guy still works for the Maple Leafs organization as a Zamboni driver)

:)
What is a favorite childhood memory?

A family reunion when I was about four or five that had people sleeping in sleeping bags all over my Great Uncle's large house. It never happened again. :(

What do you notice on a woman first?

Is there a certain "style" of woman you're attracted to (a hippy chick vs sporty spice)?

This us going to sound sappy. Eyes. Don't get me wrong: I love boobies and backsides and shapely legs, and... where were we? Eyes. I guess that's because I was taught to look a person in the eye when you speak to them. Oh, and there was my University roommate. He was in a moment of passion with his girlfriend and she said "What colour are my eyes?" Evidently "How the fuck should I know?" Wasn't the right answer

Type? Not really. I have a slight preference for curvy women, but not overriding by any means. The only real "type" I have is "female".

Was the first time you had sex awesome or awkward? Was it like you imagined it would be?
