Being a woman in geek culture

Here's something a little different.

The first stop-motion animation (really, the first of both genres) ever was done by a woman in the 20's: "The Adventures of Prince Achmed". I'm in the middle of watching it right now, and I have to say that it is an amazing piece of art and absolutely beautiful. Nothing was drawn; all the characters and scenery are cut paper.

You can watch the whole thing here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwvIJGsXizE

As some of you may know the new Shriver Report ' A Woman’s Nation Pushes Back from the Brink ' has recently been published. I've encounters some problems with the web site so here's the direct link to the report at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HNBD11Y, which is free until the 15th. I do recommend you download it.

I've emailed the links to all my friends and acquaintances, even those of a more conservative bent hopefully after reading the report some hearts and minds of those conservatives can be changed. I ask you all to do the same. If you happen to have your own blog or web page it surely would help to include links to the Shriver Report and to the website of the Center for American Progress, links are below.

We don't always agree but I think we can all agree that the conservative right's War on Women is linked to their war on the poor. A war not based on logic or the good of our country but one based on their belief in gender inequality and racial inequality and, at least for me, the saddest part of this is it isn't just men, many women are just a racist and sexist as these men. I'm not absolving liberals and/or progressive, I've experienced racism and sexism from both groups but I do believe liberals do want to change and do at least understand there are better ways.

Go read the source material. It's easy, I linked to it. Bring your own citations here if they contradict what Scott has said.

Contradictions? People are way too smart for it.

B Scott for example writes that the tunic outfit was approved. That's right. Somehow he forgot to mention the makeup, high heels and hair. He just doesn't mention it. Hell, for a 2.5 million lawsuit I would forget a lot of stuff if necessary...

The story of two overly emotional people on both sides is in my opinion much more believable than the story of the evil transgender-hating company who hires a transgender without knowing that he is one.

Well, well, look at you, bringing something to the table-- AND, what is more, a reasonable comment about the situation. Much appreciated. :rose:

I get a kick out of the comments "How are we ever going to explain why we hired a drag queen performer to perform not be in drag? How can we spin that???"

Because, really. It's the question on everyone's lips.

I DO understand why some kind-hearted producing, and-- this is important-- non performing-- type guy might think that the tempered dude he had a drink with should be the personality in front of the audience. And some people, who are actors and not other types of entertainers, might be able to shift away from their public persona in public. But many entertainers are very limited that way. Scott, himself, may be uncomfortable and inept on the stage; B is the one that has all of those skills.

And one comment in there is; "The heels, we were okay with those, weren't we?"

oh. ok sorry then.

I guess logical sexual dimorphism taken to unpleasant extremes is too ick for stella. I guess it's better I didn't try to post pics or talk about bugs.

Or I'm a one subject boor.

I thought ko-pilot might appreciate the topic. I suspect when/ if I saw satin's link posted before it was from her, where ever that was.
So, I'm all WTF????

And then I was all, 'must have missed something,

and then I go looking and you're all
Most of the races presented in the Alternity role playing game refreshingly lack human reproductive organs (at least in the book. not so much in the fan art). They were still humanoid, in my theory because developing a universal character creation system including significantly varied non-humanoid races can be a bitch (I've tried).

I always liked the way that male weren were depicted with larger tusks & a handle like piercing through the brachial muscles of the forearm.

I recall a fantasy setting where ogres were presented as being highly regenerative and almost asexual.

A pregnant female developed breasts for nursing young, but as the breasts stopped producing milk the voracious & omnivorous offspring literally devoured the mother's flesh (which is probably about the time she says fuck this and ditches the kids with dad).

Whis is totally awesome, really, I just didn't see it because of reasons, like my own personal stress levels, that have nothing to do with my interests or icks, and reproductive dimorphism is not an ick, unless it's being used as a metaphor to objectify human women and men, in which case ick. But you are talking about ways in which aliens can be designed like aliens and not be re-written humans.

So excellent! :rose:

Naw, I'm fine with matricidal partial cannibalism in other species. hey, if it works, it works.

I just didn't really see the post, that's all.

My favorite aliens would be single-sexed, I think. At least, at this time... I'd like them to choose societal roles according to personal inclination. In this I am no way projecting...

oh. ok sorry then.

We (as in the whole thread's participants, not you and I specifically) have talked about the subject, I believe, SEVERAL times now, but I have not linked that exact tumblr article. That's probably your source of confusion. No problem, really, I don't mind. This has become....well...surprisingly enough, a REALLY LARGE thread with a LOT of posts, and it's easy to mix things up and forget what exactly was shared. I don't mind. Hell, sometimes, I go back and re-read 10-20 pages or so just to make sure things aren't being repeated too much and shared items aren't re-shared accidentally. It's become so large that I'm having a difficult time remembering early stuff! :D

To be completely honest, I never expected this thread to get this long and have so many insightful people taking interest in it. It makes me feel really good that I have you all. Intersectionality and inclusiveness is really important to me when it comes to Feminism, having all these different viewpoints from POC and men as well as your standard middle class white woman have been very thought provoking and interesting. I want you all to know that coming here was courageous and I commend every person here for being brave enough to share and be vulnerable.

We are making ourselves targets for trolls. OBVIOUSLY. But we have to be strong enough to stand against it and not allow it to wear us down. They want us to give up, but we can't do that. We owe it to ourselves and everyone to get up and keep fighting the good fight.

In the story I'm working on right now, I am pretty unabashedly projecting. They are a species with about a 15% rate of what we'd call intersex conditions in the general population, and more than half of that group is fertile. They can have any combination of body/genital configurations, and because of the theology I've set up, they're a respected and integrated demographic. (The deity responsible for the majority of direct contact and intervention throughout their history is intersex. They're a god of movement, cycles, and numbers, whereas the male and female deities are comparatively static and represent more fixed abstract concepts.) One of the main characters will turn out to be intersexed; more as a wink to possible nonbinary or intersexed readers, as I don't plan on turning it into A Thing.

There's not a whole lot in the way of dimorphism between the male and female genders, though. Women have no breasts because there's no breastfeeding, and their hips aren't so wide because they "give birth" earlier in gestation than we do. (In reality, they're an ovoviviparous species, and the mother--who can be intersexed themselves!--merely keeps the egg in the body for purposes of protection during the first half of development. When the egg is birthed it's about the size of an acorn squash and it's another 6-8 weeks before hatching.)

I've got a whole slew of pronouns, too. Gendered pronouns, occupational pronouns, racial pronouns, and others. As far as gender goes, the world is totally my own self-indulgent fantasy. YOLO.

I have a race that reproduces towards the end of their lifespan-- before their fertile phase they are the geniuses that keep the all the races of the galaxy at peace. Then they lose most of their intelligence, rut in this big violent pile and until they ferilize and lay an egg-- which they walk away from once it's laid, so to speak.
The younger folk gather the eggs, incubate them and raise the babies. The elders get shipped off to an Old Folk's Planet-- Earth, for one, humans like to keep them as pets. Humans have absolutely no idea that these sweet little imps were ever sentient!

"I like action," my eleven year old tells me, defending her taste in netflix...

She likes the intersection of superheroes and highschool drama. That intersection alone makes me gag, but of late it means she likes power rangers...

I totally get that there are much worse things she could be showing interest for, but can I get any suggestions on something I could direct her towards? Even if it's only as a break from hearing the power rangers theme in the afternoons... just hearing it is driving me batty.

Headphones?

"In just the last six months alone, Republicans have forced draconian anti-abortion legislation into law in Kansas, Texas, Ohio, Wisconsin, North Dakota, and Arkansas even after they acknowledged that they needed to do more to attract women voters. Well, apparently Republicans don’t care about what women think because they have done nothing but double down on the war on women they have been viciously waging since 2010, when Tea Party Republicans took control of state legislatures and governorships in states across the nation. Today’s Republican is required to oppose abortion exceptions for rape victims in order to avoid a primary challenge from someone further to the right. And because of that, Republicans have been saying some really stupid things about rape and rape victims. Here is a comprehensive list of 40 quotes uttered by Republicans about rape that women should keep in mind the next time they go into the voting booth in 2014."

Start with Plan 9 from Outer Space, then move on to The Forbidden Planet. If that seems even a bit mature for her, try her on the old TV series, Space Family Robinson. Then she'll be ready for the first series of Star Trek.

Books. The content can be just as annoying but it makes less noise.

"After reading that last article just a couple days ago, I realized something. I am done making excuses for the pro-life movement. I am done trying to explain that the movement is not anti-woman. I am done trying to insist that the movement really is simply trying to “save unborn babies.” I’m done because it’s not true. The pro-life movement supports the exact policies that will keep abortion rates high. It is those who believe in choice who support policies that will bring the abortion rates down.

I was a dupe. I’m ready to admit it now.

The reality is that so-called pro-life movement is not about saving babies. It’s about regulating sex. That’s why they oppose birth control. That’s why they want to ban abortion even though doing so will simply drive women to have dangerous back alley abortions. That’s why they want to penalize women who take public assistance and then dare to have sex, leaving an exemption for those who become pregnant from rape. It’s not about babies. If it were about babies, they would be making access to birth control widespread and free and creating a comprehensive social safety net so that no woman finds herself with a pregnancy she can’t afford. They would be raising money for research on why half of all zygotes fail to implant and working to prevent miscarriages. It’s not about babies. It’s about controlling women. It’s about making sure they have consequences for having unapproved sex.

But I am very sure that there are other dupes out there. If you’re sitting there reading this thinking “but I really am in it to save unborn babies,” I am sure you’re not alone. After all, I was one of you.

If you are one who has been a part of the pro-life movement because you really do believe in “saving unborn babies,” it’s time to cut your ties with the movement. You may be an honest and kind-hearted person, but you’ve been had. You’ve been taken in. It’s time to let go. It’s time to support Obamacare’s birth control mandate, it’s time to call off opposition to birth control, and it’s time to get behind progressive programs that help provide for poor women and their children. It’s time to make your actions consistent with your motives. While I am myself no longer morally opposed to abortion, I and others like me share your desire to decrease the number of unplanned pregnancies and to ensure that every woman can afford the option of keeping her pregnancy."

I'm surprised no one responded to your last post satindesire. I did find it useful as a link to my anti-choice friends and a number of Jessie's relatives who are active in the anti-choice movement.

Thanks

I thought some might like this video OPPRESSED MAJORITY by Eleonore Pourriat, it's in French but it has English subtitles.

Yeah! I actually watched that on facebook a few days ago, really amazing.

On that video, not to argue with the message, but if you're alone, man or woman, against what 3-4 stupid punks, its just smart not to start shit.
