Do you have any font preferences?

My own view, and it may be only my view, I know, is that the default font is not appropriate for posting poetry on threads. The reason I don't like it — even though it is perfectly legible — is that it is the font we are used to using for chit-chat, discussion, jokes and all of the other fun stuff that goes on in threads. So the poetry gets mentally subsumed into this background. Thus, to make the poetry stand out from the surrounding prose I put it into Garamond, which is closer to the way it would normally been seen on the page.

Just my preference.

plus, Verdana is fat and bloated. for poetry, i don't care for the way it looks. it's too . . . round.

that's how it appears to me, anyhow. though it's probably because i never use it when i write . . . it needs to lose some weight.

I like Garamound as well but it's so small and I wasn't able to make it larger...:(

My own feeling is that changing the default font, size, or color makes the poem look affected. I would agree with what Lauren said--that it takes my attention away from the words, at least a little bit.

Just my opinion, of course.

If you want to make the poem stand out from surrounding text, an alternate way of doing that is to use the indent tag.

i have no idea what fonts i'm using where... but i do know that when i go to write poems into posting boxes where the font has changed unexpectedly, it ruins my flow and takes me some time to be able to let go and write freely again.

it's quite strange, now that i come to think about it. i've been trying to get used to writing my raw poetry in Rough Draft (that's set up as Times New Roman) but again, it seems a struggle to let go and allow the flow. weird.

Hi Poppy — to make it bigger, you simply wrap the text in bracketed code. So here is your text larger:

I like Garamond as well but it's so small and I wasn't able to make it larger...:(

Now to see what the bracket-code is simply choose to reply to my text and look at what encloses the text. Then copy that same pair of bracketed code to your reply and it will come out at size 3.

It looks (your example) exactly the same to me on my screen as the default font. I DO see when I hit Reply that it is wrapped in Size 3 but it doesn't SHOW it to me... What might be causing that?!?!

Try changing the number 3 to the number 5 and see if that makes any change.

Maybe I need to check my CP...there is something on the computer somewhere that options: Override font size

Or something like that...I come upon such things and click them to see what happens then wander off and promptly forget where I saw it! Gotta stop doing that....

Urrrr yup — that'd be it!

Down in the bottom left corner of your vB screen there's a selection tool that indicates what style you're viewing the forum in. Click there and choose the --Large Font Size style, maybe that will help?

Otherwise it's your Windows settings that are determining how you view items on your screen. To adjust those in Windows XP:
Font size only
  • Click on Start
  • choose Control Panel
  • click on the Display icon
  • open the Appearance tab
  • adjust your font in the font size menu
Screen resolution for everything you view
  • click on Start
  • choose Control Panel
  • click on the Display icon
  • open the settings tap
  • look for and choose the Advanced button
  • open the General tab
  • in the Display DPI menu, adjust the size as you like.

Don't mind me. I'm just trying out different fonts to see which I like. This is Book Antiqua.

And this is Franklin Gothic Medium. This is much easier than actually writing poems.

I've always rather liked Georgia. Too bad they don't have Bembo here.

Maybe I'll start using Garamond for poems.

By the way, Font Freak is an excellent source for downloading free fonts. They have tons of dingbats, too. I've found some good ones to use with illustrations there.

They don't have any here. The drop-down menu is just to help with a few or the more common fonts, but if the readers don't have it installed in their computers, they won't see it.

Likewise, if you type in the code for bembo, those who have it installed will see it as bembo.

See?

Got it. Lovely. :) And those who don't will see it as whatever their default font is, right? But why does the font option list not show all the fonts I have installed? Is it a limited space thing? Cause I have about quintuple (or more) the number of fonts that are shown in the options.

Bookman Old Style (if you can see it) is one I use a lot when I write. It's round and really clear-looking. Looks really clean with prose.

Right. And the list isn't based on what you have installed, but on what the site decided to list - the most common fonts that most people have and will be able to see.

You know, Lauren...it just sunk in what you are saying...:D If people don't have a wonderful but obscure font loaded, they won't be able to SEE it if I use it. Ahhhhhhhhh...I never really considered that. Good to know!

Now I get why some people document the font they are using...in a more common font!

i don't know if this is helpful to anyone or not, but if you're having a hard time seeing the print on the screen AND if you have a scrolling mouse, then:

hold down the 'CONTROL' key, and

SCROLL ONE CLICK with your mouse.

you'll see the size of the font changing and that might make web pages easier for you to read.
