Interesting that Porn has acquired this unique place in fashion leadership - but only American porn. The Japanese produce about three times as much porn as the USA and most of their talent avoids any "grooming" at all; but for some reason JAV stars are far more attractive than their western counterparts, so maybe they don't need to be concerned.

As a male with a carpet which starts just below the eyes and ends around the ankles, I would look even sillier if I shaved a strip in the middle.

Often shaved, but sometimes trimmed, sometimes au naturel, all depending on the character and the story. I don't usually make a big deal out of it, and I don't remember that anyone's bothered to comment.

Any one of those can be exciting, depending on how you write it.

I 100% agree with this. There's no go to that'll satisfy all of your readers individual tastes. I personally prefer trimed over saved, because of stubble. Some are scorched earth, others thrive in the jungle, and others stll, don't care as long as they get theirs. If it makes sense they have a bush, go for it. They're your characters, in your story. You decide what they look like.

Either or or not mentioned at all, depending on the contextual needs of the specific story. I don't see the need to make and follow one chosen look.

I put it in to distinguish one character from another, and not only visually. Some characters like the bush, some like shaved, some like wax or lasered or whatever; it shows their personal predilections.
