I think there's a point of commonality in all of this government intervention. It has nothing to do with helping anyone, making anything better, or cheaper. It's all about control and that's all it's ever been about.

Well, you and I both know that a random number stamped into a gun frame makes it a lot less powerful and therefore "safe" for the general population to possess/use.
 
In Star Trek, the Federation has a post-scarcity economy because of matter replicators.

If those ever become real, they will come at the end of a long line of technological development that began with 3D printers.

And for all time, it will be remembered that the first practical use of that technology was to make assassination weapons.
