This is exactly my point. Society (women and men being just as guilty on this one) have glorified age with males, as wisdom, intelligence, character... but done the opposite for females, glorifying youth, vibrancy, fertility...

This is why I stand by the fact that society is led by fucktards.

Nothing about society should dictate how two people view phrases shared between them. Hence there is nothing wrong with any phrase that concerned parties accept and enjoy when referring to each other, nor should anyone dictate that there is.

Extreme case in point, using Vail's example. Let's say a black and white man are blissfully ignorant of the prejudiced connotation behind the word boy, and use it on a regular basis amongst themselves, back and forth. What happens when a third party hears the white man call the other boy? They get up in arms, proceeding to inform them of how wrong it is, creating a prejudice where before there wasn't even a shred of it. Did either party do anything wrong? Not in my opinion. Will their friendship be potentially damaged beyond repair? Its quite possible.

Granted, extreme example.

The context and intent I ever use "good girl" in is with people that I know, understand, and know that they are comfortable and accepting of it. I use it in an endearing fashion, and I have never once had a problem with it. Try to tell me that's wrong? I will say go fuck yourself every time.

You always seem to have quite a strong argument that also happens to be convincing. I would agree with the bottom line, who cares what society thinks, its all about what partners agree on.

I did read what you wrote, and that's what confuses me the most. On one hand, you say its okay between two people, then you turn around and say it's only okay because society says it is, and that makes it wrong?

This whole thing started because one person would have been offended for his own reasons. And he's entitled to them, and should be respected for them. But it seems that during this discussion the entire phrase was generalized and classified as wrong because of societal view. Which is why my point in this discussion is that society should never, ever have a say in how two or more people enjoy or mutually understand each other.

As far as why society has accepted it? Who cares? Let society do its own thing. They've certainly fucked up enough to make me believe that they're never headed in the right direction, anyways.

Indeed!!!

That was entertaining.
Vail's right BTW, just so y'all are aware.
And I am trying to make my way back here, I'm currently writing with CT, The Fighter, and I'll prolly pick up one or two more. I would love to be working on Massacre, but it's not my turn right now. Though I could create another char (which I wouldn't mind). I don't think that thread should die.

My dead threads are all in my signature, go crazy.

Welcome to the thread, and I think welcome back as well?

Scratches my head at all the hububaloo.

Getting back on topic how many slow posting long term threads do people have compared to the quick posting ones? I'm just curious as to the average ratio.

That's very interesting Veroe. I like polls so might make a separate thread :D

Speaking of threads, for the life of me I still can't figure out the attachment thing, it always tells me to re-size

As for your question, for me, I only do slow long-term threads, but none of my threads have gone far enough to be considered long-term, but that's because I am new here, but the plan is long-term, long detailed posts for sure.

Welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll that was a fun read.....

Our hope was to be entertaining. I am glad we're successful :D

Most of mine are slow - cause I am

17 threads - that's like "Lit Olympics"

I try to not get serious, but sometimes......sorry

Being slow is good in my opinion, you just give the post more attention and that would, most probably, result in better posts :)

I'd love to try a quick thread... never realy had one of those. Only little blips in lounge threads.

What sorry.... ppsshhht... fuck all that.

I like when people have these conversations and the boards keep going.

its awesome.

I'd say good girl but I think I might have you sign a waiver first.

Those conversations are fun, one might even learn some things here. I never knew boy was considered an insult for black people for example, and I still don't know why.

You don't call, write, or visit. Are we breaking up?

Uh.. yes? Uhhh.. no? I forgot the question. Can I get another?

Thank you for the welcome! And your continued need to push this subject without realizing it's implications is, well, stupidity at it's finest. But I shall do my very best.

There was a time in the states that many referred to a black male as "boy", no matter their age. It was using language to keep a certain part of the population oppressed. Since, it would be absolutely uncouth and quite racist to do so now, the practice is uncommon at best, and used by only the most disgusting of Americans.

Take this little piece of history and apply it to the present. You yourself, (and others) have stated that to be called a "boy" would make you feel quite horrid, like a dog, and not quite as "manly". We are all to respect the fact that you are indeed "manly", and it's socially constructed that we respect this fact about you (and others).

But, you persist in calling grown and adult women, "girls". And you hide behind the fact that "some girls like it", and that many people say it, therefore it must be okay.

It isn't. Furthermore, it is quite rude, and infantilizing to do so to adult women. Again, we are using language to oppress a certain group. While it's not a huge thing, it is one piece, and that one piece adds to the overall picture of misogyny, patriarchy, and so on. Regardless, that some women may like it, I do believe that this particular word choice is and should be up to the individual woman.

I hope that I've made this absolutely clear, and that you're continued obtuseness is neither cute nor endearing.

Otherwise, welcome to Lit!

Oh fuck you :p

ok... I just want to point out to everyone... a few things

1. we are having three DIFFERING CONVERSATIONS on three different topics.

a. "boy" as used in a deragotory manner to African Americans. I say african amercans because i am more familiar with that term's use in the united states. It refers to slavery and is still a hot button term.

b. the terms boy and girl used by complete strangers AND/OR people you are NOT intimate with. For the term girl, persoanly I dont like being "little girl-ed" or "little-Lady-ed" by someone I have not granted permission to. It is the same reason men dont like to be called boy or little boy. it is ALSO derogatory for every reason Vail, Fish and Ausus have said.

c. the use of the terms girl, good girl, boy, good boy and every other pet name are up to the users and receivers discretion. some like the use of derogatory terms because they mean something either endearing or they like to be degraded/degrading. That is there business and no one elses. period.

2. the problem is, people dont know they are being degraded or degrading due to societal ignorance and rampant acceptance of majority mentality OR they do know, and are dickheads. We still have a lot to learn.

3. It is not ok to call someone stupid while trying to teach them. you either wish to educate or prove you are better than them. pick one but dont try to do both at the same time.

Stupidity at it's finest? Obtuseness? Thank you very much for your kind words.

I absolutely see no reason to start throwing insults at someone you don't know. If that's what you want, then sorry, I am not interested in exchanging insults with a random stranger over the internet.

I started this thread in the hopes of getting to know some people and have some civilized discussion in the process even if those discussions are irrelevant to the original purpose of the thread, now if you're not willing/capable of civilized discussion, then please spare us your condescending comments which was a very fitting response to me welcoming you.

I do have a lot to learn, even though I happen to be a teacher myself there is WAY too much I don't know and I don't mind learning, from anyone, but I never tell anyone I am trying to teach that they are stupid and I don't take it well when someone tells me that either.

Point made. I apologize.

Though I would hope I made the point absolutely clear.

But you're so worth the wait, darlin'. ;)

Your intelligence and clear use of an example shits me - wish I had said that :)

*Wonders how many people have died trying to "little-Lady" Nina*

Apology accepted :)

You made the point clear, but I am not convinced. I believe, just like with Vail, we agreed to disagree.

Hey - stop stealing my lines - that's what I say when I refuse to change to my mind on something that is clearly incorrect or at best, logically tenuous ;)

In the meantime accept this rose as a token of good will :rose:

Thank you!!! I would love to hear any comments or critique from such a great writer like yourself, but from your replies, I am guessing you are quite busy, so no pressure, I won't hold my breath :)

You can steal my profile picture if you want, an eye for an eye :D

How did a thread on "how many threads do you have", turn into a debate about proper and improper use of words.

Because I was told that, as a woman, I shouldnt' be offended when I'm called a girl, but OH NO ITS WRONG TO CALL A MAN A BOY!
Interestingly, this opinion was held by a man, and not so much any of the women who spoke up.
But, you know, what matters our views?

I'm thinking of writing another Alice post.. she's been quiet long enough that she's bound to have constructed some interesting world or another!

A question put to the purveyor of this thread. It seems that you, 7, are a relative newbie, and yet, also seems that you've posted in the lounge in only your thread.

Why is this?

Oh that is just fun.... especialy when its auto-michanics.
This entire conversation is depressingly textbook...

because this is the lounge for an SRP board. Its full of writers... Writers are inherently dramatic. If they weren't every story would be dull, boring and lifeless. So while not writing in a story we find other ways to entertain ourselves... using words... talking about words and having very strong opinions we like sharing, with everyone.
Perhaps if we had more smut happening we could be diverted to using our little brains rather than our big ones.

No, i'm not attacking you, i'm attacking the drama of it all... So quite lookin all deer in the headlights.

I was thinking about shannon just yesterday.
I dont think that thread will ever really die... just morph. or should morph.

Into interconnected one-offs in the lives of the patients and staff of the asylum. rather than a flowing story.

you've never tried to avoid drama and snarky people before have you? Most newbies do this by being polite, staying out of other peoples threads till they get comfy and learning the ropes. -nods-

Ausus: fuck you
Nina: not now, i'm having an overly dramtic bitchy moment.

I know you consider this drama, but it isn't for me. This is an active cause in my life. Its fine if it isn't in yours, but this isn't me having a snit.

Also, I'll write Tessa the moment people say we should
