where readers never decide the winners?

Here are the new figures on the LITEROTICA section of the contest (updated from the 19th)

While the INCEST and LW stories were hit by the sweeps (one story lost over 300 votes) by and large there wasn’t much evidence that these sweeps affected scores very much.

Nor was there much change in the rankings of stories except for two stories – the one by talismania and the one by Tara Neale. These two, one a Romance and the other Sci-Fi, seemed to have got battered. They may well rise again before the contest ends.

The Gay one by OrangeRibbon also fell but by not as much and quite frankly it shouldn’t even be eligible. It’s a chapter and clearly contravenes the rules.

We have 31 EH stories and the public hasn’t taken to them: generally low votes and low scores…

INCEST has done surprisingly well score wise – the participation of deurtdawg, silkstocking, the baron and Ahabscribe has raised the bar…

NH, SF and Romance are still producing high scores on average stories…​

I wouldn't consider a "3" to be a bomb. What that means is "Liked it - keep on writing." I would hardly call that a negative comment. A "1" or "2" is a trollbomb, and anything higher is a genuine expression of opinion.

I worry about the boxman sometimes.

The average score is approximately 4.05
The average # of views is over 18,000 …

It’s hard to imagine that any story that attracts 18,000 readers doesn’t have at least 100 (1 in 180) that really “hated it”! The miracle for all of us is that the readers who “really hated it” for the most part don’t vote.

The boxman and all of us should just thank our lucky stars that the voters are so kind to us. And we should stop complaining about the few who do give us their honest opinions.

The reality is that the scores in the contest are far too high!

In fact out of the 130+ stories entered only 5 have scores under 3! And only 19 have scores under 3.5! And of these over half came from our two “quantity is more important than quality” writers (ace and ralphie).

Which means that, even counting those two, over 85% of the entries are rated 3.5 or higher.

Historically, Scouries, my scores have nothing to do with the quality of my stories.

As the most bashed writer on the site, I will match any of my stories against any of your stories. If you read any of my stories, you'd know that they are all well written. Nevertheless, just as you do, I have many detractors who make sure that I will never win a contest here.

No matter. My real joy is writing the story. I'm living my passion by writing what I want whenever I want whether you read it or anyone down votes it. That doesn't matter. What matters is the story.

Maybe instead of being so fucking mean and miserable, you should just die.

And this is coming from the guy who murdered one of LITEROTICA’S greatest dead authors – BOSTONFICTIONWRITER?

Yes ralphie you hide from the truth by blaming these anonymous bashers who hate you. But it’s not true. You have stories that have received hundreds and hundreds of votes in this contest. And yet they score no better than your low vote stories that might conceivably be affected by these supposed bashers.

A few enemies on a 555 vote story can’t change it from a 4.50 to a 3.55 one. Nor can they lower a score on a 300 vote story from 4.70 to 3.14.

Our readers want more from you. They want you to concentrate your talents on categories you’re good at. This shotgun approach simply turns off readers who might have liked you.

And they want you to put quality before quantity. They want you to take the time to produce the stories they know you’re capable of.

I knew it'd just be a matter of time before we saw a new scouries alt. Wonder why he even bothers?

So, once again, I think there should be two levels of good story differentiation. Maybe a red H for Sizzling (4.5-5) and an orange H for hot (4.0-4.4). But the website isn't listening to such suggestions (which I think would enhance its commercial value).

db Always agreed with you on the second H level. I think it would do much to eliminate over-inflation of scores, the angst associated with dropping below 4.5, and reveal to readers how much quality is actually lurking in that 4.0-4.5 range.

Of course here I don’t agree with ace or db. To me the simplest solution, one I’ve advocated for years, is to do away with the red H completely. The second that MANU finally put every stories scores next to the story on the author’s homepage the red H was made unnecessary. Here’s what I wrote years ago (I still believe in this solution):

I’m not sure where, when or why the red H’s originally arose. Did the H at one time represent a ‘hot’ story? Hot in the sense of sexually hot? If so, why do so many authors who don’t even attempt to write sexually hot stories get so upset if their story doesn’t get an H?

I mean you wouldn’t think someone who’s written a ‘Non-Erotic’ or ‘Sci-Fi’ or ‘Essay’ category story would care if his story got an ‘H’. But Christ, do they ever!

Why don’t you just put the numerical rating (i.e. 4.61) next to every story and the number of votes the rating is based on (i.e. 42) and leave it at that. Just imagine how much crying we’ll do away with.

Doing away with the red H is, yes, another approach. It's only been a couple of months, of course, that ratings where given for stories on the general lists readers could see--or only a couple of months that this option was viable. Of course a symbol designation in more reader friendly.

They decided to call this new prize, one they believe will soon become emblematic of erotic fiction excellence and the most respected author’s award in the genre, the MANU. This name of course honors the first PRINCE of erotic fiction, a man who’s become a giant in the field of erotic publishing.

Apparently in scouries' world no one has ever written a sci-fi story with lots of sex in it. Of course he knows that an H simply denotes a 4.5 or higher and it's natural for people to care about their scores
regardless of category.

I knew it'd just be a matter of time before we saw a new scouries alt. Wonder why he even bothers?

I'm guessing the grieving period for Gabby is over. In the future scouries might want to keep his blow-up dolls away from sharp objects.

When it comes to scores the only thing that should be eliminated is anonymous voters. next up would be a way that limits each IP address to one vote.

They can do it with comments. Why not votes? Funny to see where Scouries scores would go if they could swing that.

The second tier H is dumb. It would be fine for awhile, then it would e "how about a purple H for 3.5-4.0?" It's hot or it' not. Admittedly a 4.49 can be annoying, but oh well.

Ohhhh myyyyyyyy gaaaaaaaaawd!!!! The NOT the oggman’s LITEROTIC/A.I.R. AHland Halloween Contest 2011 Support Thread actually had a visit from the oggman! Like how weird is that?

Of course his post demonstrates perfectly why it’s time for him to retire. Unfortunately he gets mixed up quite easily. mister james r scouries, of course has never been and is not now, a judge in any a.i.r. contest.
