Punk rock, Hardcore, Oi!, Garage, Metal, Ska, Indie, Power Pop, Northern Soul (and whatever else) Discussion and Anarchy thread

@PearlyDewdrops

Thanks for dropping split dogs in the challenge thread. Great band and have all the right chops, look and sound!

they do have a one song rule a day there tho…

But this thread has no such restrictions.

Cuz it’s (punk) rock n roll - and the message is… do it.

This was the prompt for the daily music challenge and man if ever I could post two songs… I just went with the toy dolls, but so hard to choose between them and The Rezillos

Day 1: A song that references a specific year in the title or lyrics

I don’t think I earned a 2nd play, but if there was ever a day to choose two…

It’s gonna be a great year. Happy ‘26 all!

Toy Dolls - Back in ‘79

And my second play woulda been this marvelous fuckin vid. Fuckin hillarious. Fay is just going apeshit and berserk. ❤️

The Rezillos - 2000AD

Cheers. I'll drop the Split Dogs in the punk thread when I have some time.

And I'll post an all time favourite on the song challenge. 😉

Brother - that was a hot fucking track that you put on the song challenge thread.

Top fucking notch!

Helen of Oi! Has a great voice.

The Violators have a small but perfect discography and Summer of '81 is a classic. I was 15 at the time and those riots and then the miner's strike. I think people forget how aggressive and politically febrile those times were in the UK.

I have a couple of mates who are regulars at Rebellion and I've been there too. But I must confess my tastes are all over the shop. Still, I keep my ears open to what those friends recommend and I love

Split Dogs - Lafayette

That visual style, those lyrics, punk guitars but a bit of a northern stomper beat. Well let's say I'm out of my seat on my feet and in love.

Rebellion is elusive for me cuz it’s I the heart of our farming and gardening season. (Altho the farm isn’t so bad, my wife has an gardening business.) Every year we talk about it, but my practical wife finds reasons for us not to go.

I mean I gotta go one day - they have the most amazing lineups.

We went to rebellion Christmas in 2012. It was like a dream come true. It was in Brimginham. First a Wolves/Birmingham city match (wolves won 1-0) then to rebellion, where we saw street dogs, test tubes, exploited, UK Subs, cock sparrer and rancid headlined. Truly one of the most amazing days of my life.

You should definitely go to Rebellion. It's a lot of fun. I took my woman there as part of a trip around the north west (using Blackpool as a base) and it was just the best holiday ever.

Saw The Outcasts last night in the 100 club in London. Classic 80s Belfast punk but not a huge crowd sadly. Few drinks with the band after and it also served as a tribute to a former band member who passed on New Years Day. As the lead singer pointed out, that’s now 3 of them who have left the planet.

Dunno to make a love emoji or a sad emoji (for departed members)…

Looks like a fun time. I’ve only been to the hundred club once and no bands were playing, but I got a one-on-one audience with the owner.

Played there about 15 years ago. Place was full, but I know it can be empty even with good line ups

Was a good night and overall it was remembering the good times, so a love emoji is fine. As they said when we were chatting, it was the worst night for them to play as UK was generally heading back to work the morning after, post Christmas, but they really appreciated those of us who turned up.

Who were you playing with? Yeah it’s full of history (obviously) and some huge names there but this was quite empty sadly

Hate Rebellion and all it stands for. Keep punk DIY. Support the smaller venues.

I totally get what you’re saying, but for me, there’s very little chance of these bands coming to the US.

I don’t even know if the toy dolls are around anymore (I know Olga is now in the cockney rejects) but they haven’t toured the US and 30+ years. UK Subs in 20+ years.

The last time sham 69 was in the states was when I was in the army.

Most of the other “Big“ bands I have seen. In fact, last time I saw UK subs and Cocksparrer was rebellion Christmas 2012.

I have no idea who the organizers of the festival are, if they’re crooks or good people, but I would go again.

Having said that, I also don’t mind plunking down 10 -20 bucks either to see some local, new or young bands, churning it out.

JMO of course.

Does anyone have this album?

The Moonlight Tapes

It was a compilation of bands that played the moonlight club before it closed.

I have a pretty good memory where I got most of my records in 45s, and this one came from the Chester flea market in Chester New Jersey. Probably 1982 or 3.

I would go there and buy records before my shift started at a local restaurant.

At the time, I thought it was OK. I was more into hardcore and UK82 sound. I remember liking it and thinking most of it was just OK.

It’s classic 1980 new wave, power pop, pop punk (hate that term but maybe it fits)

But then times and my musical tastes changed…here are some classics from this album, which was recorded live.

What got me thinking is that this song came on my playlist yesterday. I’ve never heard this version.

Lightning Raiders - Views

I mean, this is as good as power pop you’ll ever hear.

This version is from the moonlight tapes and Steve Jones and Paul Cook on guitar and drums, although they were not regular members of the band.

Live version from the Moonlight Tapes LP.

A fine song!

New toy dolls lp imminent. The organisers are good people, doing it a long time.. but very closed shop. You got to know the right people to get on and play. No meritocracy
