Sheep and sugar cane, that's it.

Hey, I couldn't help it. I was in love with Rachel Ward and her accent.

 Rachel Ward does not have an accent.

Two different guage railways...that's funny.

Kind of reminds me of federal goverment construction projects here. The construction documents are produced showing metric measurements, and everyone working on the project is required to make their submittals also in metric and use metric tape measures at the project site. I remember one time working one such project; I submitted all my technical documents and drawings showing metric, with the equivalent feet and inches in brackets. After waiting almost 6 months for the submittal to be returned, it finally came back "rejected" because I had shown the equivalents.

Funny thing is, unless the custom made materials were made overseas or in canada, the suppliers converted to feet and inches to manufacture their products, thus adding another place to make an error.

I like working in metric though, once you grasp the spatial aspect (3000 mm is about 10 feet) it is much easier to work with.

I wonder if the government will ever require contractors to bid projects using the metric dollar.

That's just too weird, so metric is ok for the government, but not for the general public?

Yank, Quoll, Ed, TBK, Scaly...where did you meet your wives and/or how did you propose? I'm sure you've answered these here before, but I don't recall even the Cliff Notes version.
I'll just answer for me if you don't mind.

She used to walk past me in the mornings on her way to her school, she used to wear corduroy pants and her thighs always made that swooshing noise. :p
A year later I met her again at the shop her parents owned, we eventually became best friends.

I proposed to her when she was in hospital.

If I may...

quoll, a fluffernutter is a sandwich made of peanut butter and marshmallow fluff (it comes in a jar--white goo that is like very soft marshmallows) I personally have no knowledge of these, but my daughter dated someone who grew up in the land of fluffernutters.

A whoopie pie is a cake-like cookie that consists of two chocolate cookies with some sort of cream filling.

Chowder is a kind of soup/stew.

I am not a New Englander--born and bred in the Midwest. so these are my best guesses based on what my friend Yank has said.

Yank? MrWag? How'd I do?

You did well, BG. Here are a couple of resources:

the Marshmallow Fluff Cookbook (Amazon link)

Whoopie Pies from Maine Goodies

Traditional fluffernutters are made on white bread but I use whole wheat bread for mine. President George H. W. Bush (the one who could spell) ate fluffernutters regularly while he lived in the White House.

Whoopie pies are actually made from cake batter and they are about the size of a decent hamburger. The cookie part is soft like cake and the filling is traditionally a vanilla cream frosting.

Makes me hungry just to post this. :)

erika: an interesting question, and one that will take more time than i have to answer just now but i will later today. :>

You said the Kenny Chesney concert wasn't one of your finer dates...was it the worst? If not, regale us with the tale of the most terrible date. (I'm thinking like one of those so-bad-it's-funny (now at least) kind of deals that most of us have had, but it's open.)

What was the best date?
the kenny chesney thing wasn't too big a problem... i'd been in a bit of an LTR (for me at least) with the broad i took. she was a huge fan and i should have realized that a country music fan isn't for me. we had a physical relationship long before the concert but never had actual intercourse. short version: she was very sexually repressed and wouldn't/couldn't converse on the topic... any questions i had were either greeted with an awkward smile or an "i don't know." it was just a doomed relationship from the start.

i had a fair amount of trouble trying to think of a worst date because i couldn't remember ever having one. then i remembered that i DID have an awful date... and it lasted about a week!

there was this girl going to school in GA (she was from chicago so it wasn't like she was a local georgian... which would have disqualified her from the start) and we were both heavy into campus programming. we were introduced by a mutual friend and hit it off big time over the phone & IM. it was one of those things where you just click on all levels.

well... we decided we should get together over winter break. she was returning to GA from her holiday in montana when i got down there. pretty much from the first day it was a disaster. i'll cut out the details but it was like she was an entirely different person... like she'd shut down or something. one morning i said something to her (i can't remember what it was) and when she came home that afternoon she told me about how she'd been jazzed and singing all day because of whatever these magic words were that i said. by dinner time, she'd shut down again and it was back to basic polite communication... no bonding of any kind and a complete emotional shut down from her again. i tried to make the best of it but i was stuck with her in her apartment until my flight out.

it was all really very weird. i have no clue what happened other than to say that there must have been some chemical thing present that didn't come in to play on the phone. *shrug*

oh... and there was that time that bi came over dressed in a donkey head and ballet tu-tu... it was by my request but that was a thought that didn't come to fruition quite the way i'd expected either. :(

oh! i almost forgot... best date ever...

this is a no-brainer. i love this story and, while it's not very exciting for others, it's both the best and worst time of my life to me.

when i was in HS, there was this girl who, from the moment i first met her, i was totally attracted to her on every possible level. we became fast friends and got to be very close to one another. our very first phone conversation included the topic of who we liked. after much evasion, i finally replied (passive-aggressively) that i liked the 21st letter of the alphabet... very 2nd-gradish, don't ya think? after trying to figure it out for a couple of minutes she finally got it. she didn't flip out, but pretty much dismissed the idea.

we kept talking... for years we kept talking and were always there for each other. we knew all about each other's social lives and all the intimate details. i even bought her an EPT test when she had a pregnancy scare (which turned out to be only a scare) and stayed with her to wait for the results.

one night in 1996 (about 8 years after we met) she called me crying about how she'd broken up with her boyfriend of two years (he was a friend of mine as well). i consoled her and we comiserated for hours several times a week for a couple of months. one thing led to another and i suggested that we should go out. with a little pushing i finally got her to agree.

at this time she was still in NJ and i was down in MD. my father was going on vacation for a week and i was driving him to the airport. when i dropped him off, i went to her place... we got her car loaded and she followed me to his house. we spent a week there, just the two of us. we went to dinner, rented movies, talked and had a lot of fun together. it was the beginning of the best two years of my life. there just isn't any way to articulate how well we got along and how completely we bonded. she was (as phoebe said on "friends") my lobster. together we could do no wrong... we'd argue, we were both neurotic in our own way... but the overall relationship was fantastic.

sadly, i have my own issues with love and started thinking too much in the immediate present rather than in the long term. each has its place but i started applying them both in the totally wrong ways. little things started getting to me and i started wearing down emotionally. we parted ways and swore to keep our friendship intact... but that didn't work out. i still supported her in her personal life when she needed it but then things developed where she'd only contact me if she needed comforting or help and i wasn't up for being used like that on a regular basis.

i told her that on the phone one day when she called for my help with something. i essentially told her that we were either friends who communicated normally, or, if she wanted me just as a pillow to cry on, then she'd have to find someone else to fill that role. i never heard from her until she IM'd me that she was getting married... i didn't reply to that IM and haven't heard from her since.

i'm over her emotionally but i can't help but think that i blew an opportunity. it's very possible that it was destined to work out the way it did... but whatever the case, the first time i walked through her door as her boyfriend... and that week we spent together alone (along with most of the 2 years that followed) was the absolute best time of my life... and she was the greatest woman i ever knew.

my mother-in-law's recipe

Snickerdoodles
1 cup crisco 2 2/3 cups flour 1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 cup sugar 2 tsp. cream of tartar
2 eggs 1 tsp. baking soda

Cream the crisco with the sugar. Beat in the eggs. Sift the dry ingredients together. Add to the egg mixture. Form into walnut sized balls. Mix together 3 tsp. cinnamon and 3 Tbsp. sugar. Roll the balls in the cinnamon/sugar mixture and bake at 400 degrees for 10 - 12 minutes on an ungreased cookie sheet.

These are real popular cookies in Pa too. Hey! i do know how to do something else other than harrass Quoll.

personally, i'd use butter rather than crisco... more flavorful... but that's just me. butter's healthier than crisco too. just don't eat them all in one sitting. :) easier said than done, i know.

You could but she doesn't. It changes the texture of the cookie from chewy to crisp. My mom's recipe used both--but alas it's gone. *sigh*

EJ: but using crisco does something to the texture that just using butter doesn't.

yes. like minx said, the crisco will tend to make the cookie more chewy. i like chewy cookies as well but for me, the butter is the way to go with cookies. whatever you choose, just stay away from the butter flavored crisco... blasphemous is what that is.

sometimes it takes a little practice with a recipe but you can get chewy cookies from butter. when they're cool you can put them in a tightly sealed container with an apple wedge to keep them that way too.

After some research, I think I answered my own question.

time zone for quoll's location (and possibly australwind's too) is GMT +10. And one hour for Daylight Savings Time currently in use, so it's GMT + 11.

eastern time (us) is currently GMT - 5. Therefore a difference of 16 hours between locations. During the summer here we have daylight savings time, turning clocks ahead 1 hour, so our time would be GMT - 4. Then the difference ould be 14 hours.

So, the last few days when I've been thinking quoll has been logged in here at 3am (and thinking he's having trouble sleeping), it's actually been 5 am.

It just so happens were are in the same time zone, so you are correct.....there are two time zones in the summer on the eastern seaboard here....and we also have Central time and then the west time zone
