Second annual Crime and Punishment story event - the 2024 Story Event Official Support Thread

Mickey Spillane's Event is to write in the Film Noir style, which was based on the fiction writing styles of Ramond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Erle Stanley Gardner, and others, including Mickey Spillane, who carried on that style of literature. Crime and Punishment is about crime fiction in general and not specific to the dark and realistic Noir type of fiction.
Yep, that's the subtlety in my mind, too. Noir vs Dostoevsky; LA Forties grit vs Russian angst and Siberia.

Of course, in either, you can portray the story from the point of view of a hero, a villain, or someone in between. Or as I have done with my little DDA (Deputy District Attorney), a very anti-hero.

This is essentially correct. Anything written for the Mickey Spillane event would qualify for this event, but this is broader and encompasses all criminal activity/law enforcement/incarceration. If anyone has written a Noir story, I would encourage them to post it in the Mickey Spillane event. But if you miss the deadline, it can still go here, so your time is not wasted.

I am thrilled to say that last year's entry for this event has been finished for this year's event. It's a loving wives/mafia tale called Butterflies and Bullets. :)
Time to start proofreading.

I accept the points made earlier about the distinction between this and the Hammered event. Nevertheless, I’m planning to submit a story featuring the same protagonist, a porn star turned P.I. I just paid a little more attention to make sure a crime was committed prior to the investigation.

Crimes that are solved before they are committed are very interesting, though.

Editing and sending to beta readers now. A short (about 6K) sweet interracial story involving (extremely) mild raceplay between a pair of newlyweds.

I was pretty happy with mine when I wrote it. Soon I'll take another gander at it for continuity and flow, and then? I'll need to remember when to post it! :nana:

I have initiated the process to submit my story but for some reason the Preview&Publish button isn't working for me, so my story is now sitting in Draft status. Is anyone else having that problem?

There's a big problem with submissions at the moment. I've not experienced it myself, but a number of posters in a number of AH threads have brought it up.

I'm going to wait until people say it's resolved, I think, before I do my own Crime And Punishment.

Mine are ready to go, but I'm waiting for the Friday before the Event opens and hoping it goes live on the 2nd or shortly after.

The problem is resolved and I've submitted my entry. I put in the Comments block not to publish it before 02SEP24

I have that noted, but I'm not taking a chance that it will slip through too early. I've asked my publisher to access my account and submit it next Thursday.

Reminder - The Second Annual Crime and Punishment Story Event begins Monday, September 2, 2024. The submission window is open from September 2, 2024 through September 20, 2024. First time offenders and recidivists are all welcome to participate. Last year's event was a huge success. Let's try to top it.

Allrighty then! Time to get 'er posted. Thanks for bumping the thread as a reminder!

I'll probably submit tonight or tomorrow.

"Under Penalty of Law" is now pending... and only a year later than I'd intended. It's about the most heinous of crimes: tearing off mattress tags.

Okay, Butterflies and Bullets has been submitted. And like @NoTalentHack's story, it is last year's story finally finished. I don't dabble much in the LW category, but let's see how it does. ;)
