September Film Challenge 🎬

My most (apparently) controversial takes about The Phantom of the Opera:
1. Gerard Butler was a better Phantom than Michael Crawford.
2. Christine made the right choice; the Phantom would have been hotter than Raoul if he wasn't so emotionally unstable.
I said what I said! 😂
What what what????

OK, @morelikeasong if nobody objects, I'll play

Day 1, the first film I saw in a theatre? Like @Saltfountain it was Pinocchio. Likely about 1962 or '63, late November (my Birthday).

Day 2: A film you watched over and over as a child. Hmmmm..."Child is kinda subjective. We got a VCR in 1977 when I went to University armed with a 17" B&W TV. But, one movie I watched every time it was on TV was Goldfinger (thanks Dad)...No Mr. Bond, I expect you to die...

Day 3 A film that made you laugh out loud...from the front row of the Albion Odeon in Rexdale, in glorious Black and White and Plywood, Young Frankenstein (That's Fronkensteen)

So much so that I built a moving bookcase entrance to a room in the basement. (the spare room, AKA Dungeon)

Day 4: A Film that starts with "The"

The first one that came to mind, the greatest film noir (some argue it was the first)...The Maltese Falcon. Bogart (not @Mr_bogey ) at his sneering, cynical best...Sam Spade tells all us chumps in the audience who killed Thursby and Captain of the LaPaloma...and promises to wait for the Dame after she "takes the fall"

...on the Maltese Falcon. Hitchcock loved making films where his actors were after "the McGuffin" (Think "Suspicion" and North by Northwest for example).

This was the OG McGuffin

I know we've talked about this before.
It will never not be shocking to me.
Have you guys seen the sequel, Love Never Dies? There's a live staged version available to rent on Prime. May change your perception of Raoul.

Gerard Butler doesn’t have the pipes. He is hotter though
⬇️

But he doesn't sound like he inhaled helium 🫣 I'm sorry, I just don't like the original Phantom's voice 😬
See last comment.

She was fabulous… Butler can’t sing for shit.
I hate hate haaate that weird gurgling think she does at the end of Think of Me. I highly recommend the Royal Albert Hall version; Sierra Boggess and the lady who plays Carlotta are both spectacular.

He's a poor man's Crowe...
I would say Gerard Butler is more of a poor man's Hugh Jackman. Jackman was great in The Greatest Showman, but waaay overdid it in Les Miserables. His voice was breaking with emotion so much in every damn line that there was no discernable melody left. Butler did okay as Phantom though. I was lucky enough to see Davis Gaines as Phantom when I was a kid, and he was spectacular. The Royal Albert Hall version has a post-show performance with Sarah Brightman and 4-5 past Phantoms that's pretty cool. The younger guy with dark hair was a bit too nasally though, and Michael Crawford snuck over between performances as The Wizard in Wicked, and was conserving his voice.

I have and as far as I'm concerned, it's not canon 😂 I barely remember it tbh, just that I didn't like it.

Exactly! He wasn't incredible but c'mon, he was not as bad as Russell Crowe in Les Mis!

Love Never Dies is definitely not Andrew Lloyd Webber's best, but at least it's not as tedious as Cats either. It definitely changed my opinion of 3 of the 5 returning characters though.

I don't remember Russell Crowe's performance as Inspector Javert all that well, TBH. Hugh Jackman's performance as Jean Valjean was way over the top though. Surprisingly, my favorite performance in that movie version of Les Mis was Sacha Baron Cohen!

I don't remember Les Mis very much at all, just that it made me very sad and I was confused about who chose Russell Crowe for the role and why.
