Sex & Shenanigans

In this imaginary scenario, I’m at my desk, probably picking the lamination off of something.
Listening to a home made mix of either early 2000s rap/r&b or depressing indie on a discman. I’m not reading at the same time as I’m listening to music but, if I’m reading instead, let’s go with Catcher In The Rye.
This is exactly what I would have guessed!

I mean not exactly. But exactly. Ya know.

Alright, we didn’t have nutrition, so I’ll just pretend it’s the 5 minutes between classes. 8th grade would’ve been…let’s say 1993/94.
Where are you?
Probably passing between the gold and orange halls. Lockers were painted different colors on each hall.

What are you doing?
Hustling to class, hoping girls notice me (they didn’t at that age)
What are you listening to?
Assuming headphones were allowed (they weren’t), it would’ve been Aerosmith’s “Get a Grip” album.
What are you listening to it on?
Walkman. The kind that played tapes. I didn’t get a discman until my junior year.
Are you reading? What if so?
For school, I remember reading The Outsiders in 8th grade. For pleasure, nothing.

Ok, so it’s 8th grade (you can convert yourself @Wand3rlust, like 11tieth form or something, about when you’re 13)

It’s nutrition (a break that’s not lunchtime @Wand3rlust)

So, that was a middle and high school together. I’d be sitting in the quad on this “nutrition” break (just a break between classes that was different for each grade)
That was a big Limp Bizkit phase and I had a discman that loved to skip when I walked or sat down too hard. I was definitely reading and I think back then it was probably Dragons of Autumn Twilight.

There you go Salacious 😆

Ok. In my scenario I am outside in the field sitting in a circle with my friends making daisy chains and we're gossiping about Heather and Connor breaking up.

I am not listening to any music... I didn't have a walkman because they ruined the aesthetic of an outfit. If I'd been listening to something though it would have been No Doubt or Shakira. Maybe Britney. Or NSYNC. Depending on my mood.

I would have been reading Mary Higgins Clark. Or some smutty romance novel that I had hidden from my parents.

Oh, you kids…. No mamby pamby breaks for me, but if it was at lunch, I’d be outside with a friend, just hanging out. No tape recorders were allowed in school - but I remember buying Van Halen II, which had just come out… on vinyl (still have it).

And I was reading a lot of Alistair MacLean then.

And when you’re head banging to the Bizkit, it’s gotta be extra tough!

Some deep nerd shit. Love it! (Full disclosure, huge D&D nerd, could never really get into Krynn, but Weis and Hickman are icons!)
There you go Salacious 😆
Thank you for indulging me!

It was just called passing time, we were the oldest in the school and obviously the COOLEST! I was perched against a window sill listening to my Walkman with a mixtape with songs recorded from the radio. Songs likely included 'I believe' by Blessed Union of Souls, 'Gangsta's Paradise' by Coolio and 'One Sweet Day' by Mariah Carey. I was absolutely reading some trashy romance books that I mail ordered from Harlequin

Okay, if I have longer that seven minutes between classes, I was probably skipping 4th period. Earth science. Even odds that she was just showing a movie anyway, and I wouldn't be missed.
Where are you?
Library. I know! Hard to believe.
What are you doing?
Reading. Or researching for a D&D game. Maybe writing out a dungeon. You know, sexy. Oh, so very sexy.
What are you listening to?
Most likely guess would have been Iron Maiden. Number of the Beast, high on the list, but I had a bunch of mix tapes as well. New wave, punk, metal, Jimmy Buffett, and local stuff.
What are you listening to it on?
There was a Walkman that was smaller than a cassette, and had to be extended. In-the-ear headphones. It sat in its own harness, with a strap (and a few years later, I used that strap to tie up a girl for the first time while making out. Her idea. I was improvising, and she had marks on her wrist for days that she simply loved. Oh, The Girl Who Liked To Get Tied Up. Dammit, where was I?) to hang if from. It was awesome, and I still miss it.

Oh, found it!

Are you reading? What if so?
Probably not.

Of course I was reading. 8th Grade, probably the original AD&D manuals, a copy of Dragon magazine (our school library carried it), or Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber. Oh, yes, ladies, I am single. I know that is hard to believe...

I may have been a bit of a geek back then.

In my junior high there was a copy of Judy Blume's Forever... , the cover with the girl in the locket, with all of the "good parts" underlined in blue ink, that was secretly passed around from girl to girl (no boys were allowed to touch it). There was such a power to that particular copy of the book -- girls would wait to get it rather than purchasing another copy. This was The Book. It was arcane, almost ritual to it, and it was one of the first examples of the manifestation of feminine power and mystery that I remember. It was almost magic.

I remember this book. I didn't have a copy underlined in blue ink but believe me, those pages were worn.

Outside thinking I’m cool. 😂
What are you doing?
Sitting on the bleachers or sneaking off campus with my friends.
What are you listening to?
It was 1985, so I was listening to Cyndi lauper, Lou Reed, REM, The Specials, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Violent Femmes and The Smiths. I listened to mixtapes recorded from the local college radio.
What are you listening to it on?
Walkman or a boom box that was our home stereo.
Are you reading? What if so?
Stephen King. I used to like to be freaked out.

Those fantasies are far too young for this place.
I was 💯 getting derailed by talk of school break variances and not the uniform. The uniforms are a thing but not particularly my thing 😝
I did also go to Japanese high school and got those sailor Moon uniforms (and was of age by the end)
Were you in Tokyo Drift?!? That’s my favorite Fast and Furious movie.

Year 8 or 9. Depending on if you turned 13 that year, or started the year aged 13.

Also. We called it 'break'. 🙄

Morning break. Hoping to be doing DT cos that was in the canteen corridor and if you could get in the canteen first you got the fresh sugared donuts, and the toast before it went cold and soggy.
