Thanks

Woodturning is great fun.
And taking a dull piece of waste timber or firewood and turn it into something useful or/and pretty (and a lot of shavings) is almost magic.

Thanks

I'm not very handy, but I love watching stuff like woodturning and glassblowing.

This looks like a book I need.

Part of my hair is shaved, so if this goes through the summer, I really might have to try cutting it myself or have several inches of hair just sticking out the side of my head.

Today I had to fill out a profile that asked "Where can you be found when you're not at work?"

answer: "same"

You made this?
You sick fuck.

Thanks.

I have tried my hand at glassblowing. It is bloody magic.
It is so multi-dimensional. You work in space, but also in time and temperature.
I can do very simple things, but I would have to put a lot of hours in it, to do more than that.

Woodturning is a bit scary when starting, but in comparison a lot easier. Time and temperature is not a problem.

You just really have to stick to safe procedures, and accept that sometimes you botch it.
If it is not exotic wood, it does not cost much.
But we are trained “not to ruin things”, and that was the hardest for me.
Now i even like to use the “skew chisel” (aka “Satan’s can opener”). It leaves a fantastic surface, but get the angle wrong, and it tears it up instead.

I did a glassworking class once (not blowing, just glass on a stick) and yeah, the time/temperature aspect was fascinating. After several hours I had a not-terrible paperweight :) I also love how much they have to plan things out, creating a pattern that will turn into what it needs to be once the glass is worked.)

Have you ever seen the Blaschka flowers at Harvard? That had me muttering things like "SORCERY!"

Thanks.

I am exclusively a flat-piece woodworker. People who work in the round amaze me.

I had never seen those before.
That’s awesome!

I'm guessing there was a bow tied around it or something. Frankly I'd get a better reaction if I was offering a steaming cup of tea.

I thought the same about a bow or something ^__^
