The BDSM Book Club Discussion Thread

So let's make As She's Told by Anneke Jabob our BOTM for January 2010!

Works for me; nice to know since i am going shopping today. I wish I could get some of this from the library. I am afraid if it isn't Christian fiction they don't have it. If they do have it someone steals it. They had a few Laurell K. Hamilton ones but those disappeared, I know because I looked for them.

I have been donating books from my collection and they are always thrilled to get them because it is expanding the knowledge base. I figure most of the Christian fiction was donated also because the head librarian was thrilled to have my Sylvia Brown and some of the smut I have.

I do try to have books that can be found at most libraries on the list. The January month's book isn't one of them though.

:rose:

I still have not read this month's selection. I have been reading the sequel though because I had already bought it...I like it a lot but I swear if I read the word shag one more time I might scream.

I'd be interested to know how the sequel goes. I'm not planning to read it myself though.

Sounds good to me. :D

Interestingly, I haven't been able to find any of the books at my library, and I live in Los Angeles, CA. I've gotten plenty of erotic or otherwise "adult" books at the library, but not these. I find that strange. But then it gives me an excuse to go book shopping. :D

That is strange. I live in the Deep South so you'd think my library wouldn't have the selections rather than yours.

:rose:

So, I looked over the BOTM in our book club and this is what I found.

2006 Every book we did I could get from my library. (We only did eight that year though because this was the year we started.)

2007 Only five books were at my library (We did or will do twelve each year from here on out.)

2008 Eight books were at my library.
2009 Nine books were at my library.

I try to pick books that will be in my library hoping others can get them at their libraries too. I also take recommendations from everyone though regardless.

You can always say during the voting that you can't or don't want to spend money to get the book though. I don't want to spend money every month that's for sure!

I really have no problem spending money on these books--in fact, after reading Carrie's Story I actually returned the book and got my money back. I liked the other ones so don't plan on returning them, but it's always an option. :D

I'm actually a very heavy library user, almost never buy books. I like having an excuse to go to the bookstore sometimes. :D

I usually buy books instead of borrowing them. Books are my security blanket I have found. The more stressed out i get the more books I buy. I usually shop at used book stores though or thirft stores like goodwill and such. I also like to shop at the sony store. They give away free books every month, you can buy 1.00 books every month and their books are very inexpensive also compared to purchasing them in hardback. I think the new Laurell K. Hamilton costs around 20.00 if you buy it at the store or on Amazon but on the sony store it was 11.00.

Even if you don't have a sony reader I think downloading the sony store and purchasing books to read on the computer is worth your time.

Interesting. I get insecure when the library is closed!

I've enjoyed shopping at thrift bookstores. There used to be a dollar bookstore not far from where I live and I used to come home with 10 books every time I went there. Only problem is the books looked interesting in the store, but once I got them home I didn't care to read them. The fact that they were a dollar must have done something to my brain.

I'll definitely keep the sony store in mind. I also like downloading audiobooks from the library to my computer, have certainly gotten through many dreaded work hours that way. :D

Me too! :D

A relative got an electronic book reader the other day. My girl is now jealous. I'm like what? Why? I hear there are all sorts of problems with those things. Frankly I enjoy reading a book that I can turn the pages on. Of course my girl always wants electronic gadgets but rarely uses them. She loses and breaks 'em a lot. LOL.

Hmmm I guess that would mean I need to finish it. I will say this..the sequel is better than the first. I think she is a promising writer even if she does use the word shag too much. LoL

The sequel being better than the first is often the case. It was in The Dresden Files and The Hallows Series, two series just off the top of my head.

I agree the Dresden series is getting better and better. I read the first Hallows book and i had a hard time getting through it that I haven't tried the second.

As for a series that has gone downhill, I would have to say Laurell K Hamiltons Anita Blake and now her Gentry series is becoming nonthing but sex and while I like sex, I want it to be there for a purpose. I am listening to Divine Misdeamenors and I am not happy.

I was wondering if any of you know of a good place to get ahold of these books for cheep. None are in my library here in middle america (big surprise) and the prices on Amazon seem a little steep for paper back. :( any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Hmm you could try ebay or if you have a halfprice books around you then you might get lucky enough to find some of them. You can also try your second hand book store. The only issue that you will have with any of these places is if the book is popular then it is harder to find cheap. Or if the book is a bit more obscure than a best seller. I buy a lot of my books from sony and just read them on my computer.

I hope that helps.

I enjoyed the last one a lot more than I did the few before hand. Not that the sex wasn't hot, but the plot wasn't so great. The most recent one had a bit more plot line, and a little less sex. I'm hoping she's heading to a nice middle ground - hot sex scenes AND a good plot line.

I get mine off of limewire.

I agree about Hamilton but they are getting better and less sex. Yay!

The Hallows has just gotten better and better.

Maybe an online group that trades book around for the shipping would be good? Do such things exist?

There used to be a site kind of like netflix where you can rent books for a pretty decent low fee and then mail them back. I forget the site name, but I think it was something like freebooks.com.

also check out

www.frugalreader.com; you swap books and all you have to pay is shipping. the other one is www.paperbackswap.com The problem i have found with these sites is I can promise you the majority of the books that i wanted were never available and when they were people wanted 3 or 4 books worth of credit for them. Also, with what shipping costs I found it is just as cheap to buy from my local used book store. Well and I do shop thrift stores like goodwill and such on a regular basis and sometimes you will find a treasure there also. I found a Lora Leigh book for 1.50.

I almost always do my shopping, for real books, at second hand stores. Best deals, etc. The biggest issue is finding stuff like Lora Leigh and the like - they don't get a lot of those, and they go fast.

So does anyone want to discuss the December book?

:rose:

I didn't read it. I couldn't get it on limewire and they didn't have it at the used book store and I did not want it enough to go to the mall to get it.

Sorry.
